Enric Mas (Movistar Team) won stage 9 of the Vuelta a Espaa on the Alto de Aitana on Sunday 30 August, his first day in the red jersey, holding off Oscar Onley at the summit to extend his lead.The 187.4km stage from La Vila Joiosa carried more than 5,000 metres of climbing and was raced hard from the start. Movistar controlled the bunch behind a large breakaway before Mas answered repeated attacks, beginning with Felix Gall, then dropped everyone but Onley. The Scot stayed with him to the line but could not come past. Primo Rogli was third at 12 seconds and Gall fourth at 18.It is Mass second Vuelta stage win, eight years after his first, and makes him the first Spaniard to win a stage in the red jersey since Alberto Contador at Ancares in 2014. He leads Rogli by 1:18 and Gall by 1:39, with Onley fourth at 2:20 and Richard Carapaz fifth.Wout van Aert keeps the points classification on 124. Santiago Buitrago takes over the mountains lead on 29 points, climbing four places, and Onley holds the young rider classification with Decathlon CMA CGM leading the teams.Irish RidersEddie Dunbar (Pinarello Q36.5) finished 86th at 22:01 on a brutal day in the mountains and drops nine places to 49th overall. He is 26th in the mountains classification on 23 points.
