Tadej Pogaar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) abandoned the Vuelta a Espaa on Saturday 29 August after crashing at high speed on stage 8, handing the red jersey to Enric Mas as Bryan Coquard won the sprint in Xeraco.Pogaar came down late in the mostly flat 171km stage from Puol as the peloton wound up for the finish. He tried to remount but was visibly injured in the left arm and shoulder, and became the first race leader to crash out of the Vuelta since Igor Antn in 2010. He had won three of the first seven stages and led from day one.Coquard (Cofidis) took the stage in 3:47:06 for his first Grand Tour victory, beating Mads Pedersen and Jordi Meeus, with Ben Turner fourth and Jordan Labrosse fifth.Mas (Movistar Team) inherits the lead and becomes the first Spaniard in red since Jess Herrada in 2018. Primo Rogli is second at a minute, Felix Gall third at 1:11, Sepp Kuss fourth and Oscar Onley fifth. Wout van Aert leads the points classification on 124, Andreas Leknessund the mountains, Onley the young riders and Decathlon CMA CGM the teams.
