Matthew Brennan (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) won stage 2 of the Vuelta a Espaa in Manosque on Sunday 23 August, taking his first Grand Tour victory on his debut appearance, a fortnight after his 21st birthday.The British sprinter came home several bike lengths clear in the uphill finish after 202.1km from Monaco, in 4:47:47, from Pau Miquel and Tadej Pogaar. Mads Pedersen was fourth and Hugo Hofstetter fifth.Pogaar keeps the red jersey, having first seen Ethan Hayter threaten it with bonus seconds during the stage, then answered a powerful attack from Wout van Aert inside the final two kilometres. Van Aert climbs six places to second overall at nine seconds, with Brennan up thirteen to third at ten. Hayter was distanced in the finale.Brennan also takes the mountains classification and the young rider jersey. Pogaar leads the points classification on 42 from Hayter on 37, with Koen Bouwman wearing the mountains jersey on the road. UAE Team Emirates-XRG hold the teams classification.Stage 3 on Monday is the first mountain stage of the race, finishing at Font-Romeu.Irish RidersA far better day for both Irish riders on terrain that suited them. Eddie Dunbar (Pinarello Q36.5) finished 84th at 31 seconds and climbs 53 places to 84th overall at 1:32.
