Revealed: the five bikes on our 2026 Endurance Bike of the Year shortlist and the trends shaping the category
Our Bike of the Year winners will be announced on Thursday 27 August and, ahead of the big reveal, we're giving you a sneak peek at the shortlist for each category. Having already revealed our race bike contenders, today it's the turn of the endurance bike category.Today's endurance bikes are faster, more capable and more versatile than ever. Coupled with the fact that the best endurance bikes are well-suited to the riding that most of us do, this is a key category in our Bike of the Year test. Long-range comfort remains at the heart of the category, but outright performance is no longer sacrificed in pursuit of compliance. With that in mind, here are the trends that have defined endurance bikes in 2026, and the five bikes that have made the shortlist for our coveted title. Scott Windsor / ourmedia Big tyres, big comfortThe most obvious trend is the continued march towards wider tyres. The ability to squeeze in up to 40mm-wide tyres has become a defining feature of a progressive endurance bike, enabling riders to prioritise comfort, grip and versatility without compromising rolling efficiency especially on poor road surfaces. Many of this year's contenders comfortably accept tyres beyond 35mm, opening the door to rough roads, light gravel riding and more adventurous route choices. For many riders, that versatility is now just as important as outright speed. Bikes like the Pinarello Dogma X aim to deliver performance just like their racier brethren. Andy Lloyd / Ourmedia Aero for everyoneAt the same time, endurance bikes continue to become more aerodynamic. Brands are now integrating aerodynamic thinking throughout the frame, cockpit and component package while retaining the more forgiving geometry expected of the category. The result is a new generation of bikes capable of delivering performance that's remarkably close to dedicated race machines. Bikes such as the new Trek Domane, the revamped Canyon Endurace and Pinarello Dogma X demonstrate just how narrow that gap has become, each in their own ways. Some of the strongest contenders this year build on already excellent platforms, improving aerodynamics, integration, storage or ride quality without fundamentally changing what made their predecessors successful. Has 1x finally come of age? Finally, there's the intriguing emergence of 1x road drivetrains as a genuine endurance bike proposition. The Vielo R+1, refreshingly equipped with Campagnolo's 13-speed groupset, offers more evidence that single-chainring setups are becoming a realistic alternative for riders prioritising simplicity, low maintenance and wide gear ranges.Whether it represents the future of endurance road bikes (and road bikes in general) remains to be seen, but it's undoubtedly one of the category's most interesting developments. Andy Lloyd / Ourmedia The Vielo R+1 challenges conventional thinking, and the latest Campagnolo 13-speed Record X groupset build continues that philosophy. By embracing a purpose-designed 1x drivetrain, it poses the question as to whetherendurance riders really need a front derailleur. It's one of the most distinctive bikes in this year's field, the only bike specced with a Campagnolo groupset, and one we've been especially keen to evaluate.Ribble Ultra Road With the Ribble Ultra Road, value is a key factor. Andy Lloyd / Ourmedia The Ribble Ultra Road demonstrates the UK-based brands continued focus on delivering high performance at competitive prices.Aerodynamic shaping, generous tyre clearance and an impressive specification for the money make it one of the category's most interesting value propositions.Cervlo Caledonia The Cervlo Caledonia is a firm favourite. Andy Lloyd / Our Media The Cervlo Caledonia has historically been one of the benchmarks for riders seeking a fast, premium endurance bike that doesn't compromise on practicality. Its composed handling, broad capability and understated design continue to make it a favourite. This model has benefitted from marginal improvements across the design, with notable attention paid to the aerodynamics, bringing it bang up-to-date with cutting-edge endurance bikes.Canyon Endurace SLX Canyon's Endurace SLX came in for high praise when we first reviewed it. Andy Lloyd / Our Media The Canyon Endurace SLX has helped redefine expectations of the endurance category, combining comfort, low weight and aerodynamic efficiency in a remarkably well-rounded package. When Warren reviewed the Endurace SLX, he was so impressed that he called it the best endurance bike hed tested so far in 2026. Is it still the best come BOTY crunch time?Fairlight Strael 4.0 The Fairlight Strael 4.0 is an outlier in many ways, but it deserves recognition for it's outstanding qualities. Scott Windsor / Our Media The Fairlight Strael 4.0 is an alternative pick, given its a steel road bike in a field dominated by carbon, but its proven a compelling alternative. The new version remains the standard-setter for bikes of its type thanks to smart changes in the design, and a continued (and rare) focus on a wide number of fit variations, as well as customisable builds.Special mentionsSadly, not all new bikes can be tested in time for Bike of the Year reasons include test bike availability, our editorial prioritisation of the most interesting bikes (driven by what you want to read about), and other logistical hurdles.Despite not making our deadline for inclusion, we still feel the below bikes are worthy of mention.Once tested, these bikes will be eligible for next years Bike of the Year edition.Wilier Rapida Wilier's Rapida offers a good value entry point to performance cycling with Italian flair. Wilier The Wilier Rapida might not be the first bike you think of when considering the best of the year, but its one that deserves praise. It blends a sensible geometry with contemporary aerodynamics and modern design in a good-value all-round package, with prices starting from 2,899. It wasnt a headline maker at launch, but we cant wait to see if it offers the value for money it appears to on paper.Trek Domane The Trek Domane will be one to watch in 2027. The Trek Domane has long been one of the defining bikes in the endurance category, combining comfort, confident handling and impressive all-day capability. The latest generation builds on that reputation while continuing to narrow the performance gap to dedicated race bikes. The updated Domane launched too latefor BOTY 2026 but this is another bike were looking forward to running the rule over. Read more: 2012 vs 2027 Trek Domane: how Treks carbon endurance bike has gained tyre clearance and lost IsoSpeedPinarello Dogma X The Pinarello Dogma X is immediately recognisable as a Pinarello. Scott Windsor / ourmedia The Pinarello Dogma X brings unmistakable Pinarello presence to the endurance category, blending race-inspired handling from its Dogma F race bikes with a more forgiving riding position. The 'X-stays' are a defining feature, but we're particularly interested to see how its performance compares against both traditional endurance bikes and the growing crop of all-round race machines. How is a bike considered for Bike of the Year? And why isnt a particular bike included in the main shortlist?Bike of the Year is made possible by the testing weve done throughout the year, starting from the conclusion of last year's test. We re-evaluate every bike tested, with our shortlisted picks coming from the bank of experience weve built up from riding those bikes. In order for a bike to be considered for inclusion, we need to have performed either a full or first-ride review on home roads for familiarity.Bikes given a first-ride review at a launch event are ineligible until a test can be carried out on our known test routes. The shortlist is then chosen by our expert testing team, led by our Bike of the Year testing veteran and lead tester, Warren Rossiter, who goes on to pit the three most worthy bikes against one another in a final showdown to find the category winner.
