Update to Cycle Design Manual and new Neighbourhood Traffic Calming guide published
Irelands National Transport Authority has updated its Cycle Design Manual to Version 1.1 (August 2026) and published a new traffic calming guide. The authority said it includes revised bus stop guidance, additional typical layouts, updated figures, and technical clarifications throughout. A List of Changes for Version 1.1 is also included on the manuals webpage.It also clarifies details around the Width Calculator for cycle lane/track/path, noting that it now includes shared paths and that the buffer requirements for two-way cycle paths apply to shared paths. The manual was originally published at the end of August 2023, replacing the National Cycle Manual from 2011.Neighbourhood Traffic CalmingThe NTA also published the new Guide to Neighbourhood Traffic Calming and Road Safety Interventions (August 2026). It describes itself as intended for local authorities, designers, engineers and planners to use as a guideto understand how neighbourhood traffic calming and road safety interventions can be implemented.It includes a comprehensive approach to addressing traffic speed, traffic volumes and road safety issues in residential areas, the authority said.The NTA said: The publication includes a toolkit of proven interventions, ranging from traffic reduction measures such as modal filters and school streets, to traffic calming features including raised crossings, junction tightening, carriageway narrowing and lower speed environments.
