Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Bikepack on Review Small on the Handlebars, Big at Camp
Can a lightweight bikepacking tent really deliver genuine comfort? American outdoor gear specialist Big Agnes puts that question to the test with the Copper Spur UL2 Bikepack, an ultralight contender built around short pole sections and a waterproof dry bag for easier transport on the bike, alongside a spacious interior that promises relaxed evenings at camp. Whether all that justifies the 600 price tag is another matter. We tested six of the most exciting bikepacking tents head-to-head, heading to Frances Massif Central to put them through their paces click here for our buyers guide and a complete overview of all the bikepacking tents in our group review.Twenty-five years in, Big Agnes has nothing left to prove to the ultralight crowd that made its name. The Colorado outfit still answers to The Mother of Comfort, a slogan that doubles as a mission statement: shave the weight, never the comfort. The freestanding Copper Spur UL2 Bikepack, a three-season tent, is that mission aimed squarely at bikepacking. The differences compared to the trekking version are subtle but well judged: shorter pole segments and a waterproof roll-top stuff sack with robust utility straps. Rather than relying on a predefined cockpit mounting solution, Big Agnes opts for maximum flexibility when it comes to bike attachment. But does this minimalist approach hold up on rough gravel roads, or are you ultimately paying a premium for a high-quality dry bag with a logo on it?Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Bikepack | 1.63 kg | 600 | Manufacturers Website Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Bikepack 600 Technical Data Weight (complete) 1.63 kgPacked Size approx. 36 x 15 x 15 cm (L x W x H)Pole Length (packed) 31 cmInner Dimensions 200 x 128 x 103 cm (L x W x H)Season Rating 3-season Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Bikepack. The tent floor in particular appears remarkably thin, to the point where the green grass beneath almost seems visible through it. A shame: despite the 600 price tag, a matching footprint isnt included. Inspiring more confidence are the substantial reinforcements at the corners of the inner tent and the neatly taped seams throughout. Another positive: according to the manufacturer, Big Agnes completely avoids PFAS (synthetic industrial chemicals) and solvents in the production process. After a long day in the saddle, setup proves refreshingly straightforward. The TipLok system connects the inner and outer tent logically and securely, while the lightweight pole structure clips quickly into place using plastic fasteners. One unusual design feature is that the upper cross pole simply rests on top of the main pole structure and is not additionally secured at the intersection. In practice, however, this works surprisingly well and remains pleasantly quiet even in strong winds. Colour-coded pole ends provide additional guidance and make setup even easier. The inner tent is suspended from the pole structure using clipsThrow the flysheet over the top, tension it down, and youre ready to move in!Transport & MountingWith a packed pole length of just 31 cm, the Big Agnes fits easily between narrow road bike handlebars without interfering with the brake-shift levers. Unlike Nemo and MSR, Big Agnes dont rely on a dedicated cockpit mounting system. Instead, they provide a robust waterproof dry bag with four attachment points and long rubber utility straps the optimal solution for delicate carbon handlebars. The result is a pleasantly versatile setup: whether mounted to the handlebars, fork, luggage rack or stashed inside a backpack, the tent can find a home almost anywhere. At 1.63 kg, the Copper Spur sits firmly in lightweight territory, making it the second-lightest tent in our test. Out on the trail, that low weight pays off. Steering remains agile even on rough terrain, and the bike never feels front-heavy when climbing out of the saddle. A robust four-season tent like the Hilleberg Unna exerts a much more noticeable pull on the cockpit in direct comparison. The only downside of Big Agnes minimalist transport concept: the lack of integrated foam spacers, like those found on the MSR Hubba Hubba. If you carry the tent on the handlebars, its worth protecting the head tube with frame protection film beforehand to prevent the outer shell from rubbing against the paintwork. When packing up a damp tent in the morning, the Copper Spur proves refreshingly straightforward and forgiving, even if your stuffing technique is less than elegant. The MSR Hubba Hubba remains slightly more convenient thanks to its large roll-top opening when wet fabric needs to be packed away quickly. Even so, the Copper Spur slides back into its generously sized dry bag with very little fuss.Living Space & StorageOnce at camp, it quickly becomes clear why the Copper Spur ranks among the most popular lightweight tents in its class. The Vaude Space 2P still offers slightly more freedom of movement thanks to its generous dome construction and 112 cm interior height, but the Big Agnes delivers a surprisingly spacious feel of its own. The key lies in its steep sidewalls, which make the maximum interior height of 103 cm usable across a much larger portion of the tent. The MSR Hubba Hubba, for example, tapers off more noticeably towards the sides and therefore feels slightly more confined. The interior organisation is particularly well executed. The large overhead mesh pockets especially those in the foot area easily accommodate helmets, snacks, or extra layers while keeping the 128 cm-wide sleeping area uncluttered. Another practical detail is the external daisy chain, which provides a convenient place to dry wet socks, gloves, or sweat-soaked jerseys after a long day in the saddle. The two vestibules offer plenty of space for luggage, though they do without an integrated floor, a feature that comes as standard on the SIMOND MT900.The interior of the Copper Spur feels surprisingly spacious and offers plenty of well-designed storage options.Weather Protection & VentilationThe Copper Spur strikes a convincing balance between ventilation and weather protection. The material layout of the inner tent feels well thought out: around the head area, the wind-blocking nylon extends much higher, while large mesh panels at the foot end ensure plenty of airflow. As a result, cold drafts stay away from your face without the tent ever feeling stuffy. This concept is further supported by a roof vent in the flysheet that can be propped open and does an effective job of reducing condensation. The raised bathtub floor also leaves a positive impression, helping to keep out splash water and mud in wet conditions. That said, the trade-off for the low system weight is the extremely thin tent floor. If you want the material to last for years, its worth carefully clearing the pitch of sharp stones, branches and thorns before setting up camp or investing in an additional footprint.Who Should Take a Closer Look at the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Bikepack? The Copper Spur UL2 Bikepack is aimed at bikepackers looking for the lowest possible weight and the most compact packed size, without sacrificing comfort at camp. Thanks to its versatile stuff sack system, the tent can be mounted flexibly to a wide range of bikes and luggage setups.ConclusionsLow weight, compact packed dimensions and living comfort that punches well above its weight class: the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Bikepack combines all three and takes the test win as a result. A spacious interior, well-thought-out storage solutions and a versatile stuff sack system make it the standout bikepacking tent in this field. The tent floors thinness and the missing footprint are the only marks against an otherwise outstanding package.TopsVersatile mounting system with dry bag and utility strapsSpacious feel despite compact packed dimensionsPractical overhead storage nets and daisy chains for additional organisationEasy to pack away, even when the tent is wetLightweight modelFlopsVery thin tent floor requires careful campsite selection as footprint is not includedFor more information, visit eu.bigagnes.com.The Test FieldThis tent was tested as part of our 2026 Bikepacking Tent Group Review. All Tents in the Review: Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Bikepack | Decathlon / SIMOND MT900 | Hilleberg Unna | MSR Hubba Hubba Bikepack 2P | Nemo Dragonfly Bikepack OSMO 2P | VAUDE Space 2PDer Beitrag Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Bikepack on Review Small on the Handlebars, Big at Camp erschien zuerst auf GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine.
