"Edgy, fast, rail-all-day ripper" Canyon's latest Lux Trail drops 200g of weight yet gains more travel
Canyon has revamped the Lux Trail, offering more travel (140mm front and 125mm rear) and a 200g lighter weight than the previous version. The Lux Trail is designed to be a light trail or aggressive downcountry bike blending the cross-country (XC) climbing efficiency of the Lux with more travel and aggressive trail geometry.Canyon claims it's an edgy, fast, rail-all-day ripper of a trail bike.More travel and less weight Canyon's newest Lux Trail has a 140mm-travel fork and 125mm rear-suspension travel. Canyon Canyon is speccing the new Lux Trail with a 140mm-travel fork, which is a pronounced jump of 20mm, while there's an increase of 10mm to 125mm travel at the rear of the bike.We called the outgoing Lux Trail a true downcountry bike in all but name and Canyon is looking to match the capabilities of the newest version to its trail nomenclature without losing its XC-derived responsiveness.Canyon boasts that the new carbon frame is a significant 200g lighter than the previous Lux Trail, claiming the new frame weighs in at only 1,850g a whole 1kg less than Canyons Neuron CF frame, which is the brand's burlier trail bike.At a stated 12.1kg for the top-tier CF 9 model, it's lighter than the priciest Santa Cruz Tallboy by some margin.Canyon claims the pedalling efficiency is still as good as the outgoing, shorter-travel Lux Trail. The light weight and simplicity of the flexstay arrangement used by the previous version of the bike remains, but gone is the very XC-looking top-tube mounted swing-link and semi-hidden shock. Instead, the new Lux Trail uses a seat-tube mounted, 3D-forged swing-link to activate the (still) top-tube mounted shock.Canyon has added circlips to secure the bearings, which it says will improve stiffness and durability.Updated frame construction The new Lux Trail frame has a relocated 3D-forged rocker link and Canyon claims it weighs only 1,850g. Canyon The latest Lux Trail's head angle is 2.2 degrees slacker than the 67 degrees of the previous bike, but the relatively steep 76-degree seat angle remains. The reach is marginally shorter than the previous bike, but the wheelbase (which now measures 1,231mm on the large) is slightly longer, thanks to the longer fork and slacker head angle. The previous Lux Trail had 435mm chainstays on every size, but the new version gets proportionally sized chainstays 435mm on the XS to M sizes and 445mm on the L and XL.Canyon Lux Trail specification The Lux trail CF 7 includes carbon wheels, SRAM Eagle 90 Transmission and a Fox 36 SL fork. Canyon There are four specifications of the new Lux Trail on offer, and all feature the same carbon frame and 29in wheels. The top-of-the-range CF 9 has a Fox Factory 36 SL fork, Fox Float Factory shock and dropper post, and SRAMs X0O AXS drivetrain. The CF 8 gets Fox Performance Elite suspension and a GX AXS drivetrain, and the CF 6 has all-aluminium parts, an XT drivetrain, and a Fox Rhythm 34 fork and Fox Float Rhythm shock. However, it's the CF 7 that catches my attention. It weighs only 12.8kg (claimed), but includes goodies such as carbon wheels and SRAMs Full Mount Eagle 90 mechanical drivetrain to go with the SRAM Motive brakes and Fox Performance 36 SL fork. At 3,799, that appears to be a high-spec build and a low overall weight for the money.Bonus features The top-of-the-range Lux Carbon CF 9 has Fox Factory suspension and dropper post, and a claimed weight of only 12.1kg. Canyon Canyon claims the new lighter frame now houses easier-to-access in-frame storage with an improved securing mechanism. The new bike has three bottle-cage mounts, which should be enough for even the hottest days in the saddle.Looking at the spec, we can infer the bike can be equipped with a traditional derailleur hanger or SRAMs Full Mount system, which is good news for future derailleur upgrades.Price and availability The Lux Trail is aimed at downcountry and trail riders who want an efficient-climbing and aggressive-handling trail bike. Canyon The four models are all available now worldwide via the Canyon website and Canyon App. Lux Trail CF 6: 2,849 / $3,999 / 2,999 Lux Trail CF 7: 3,799 / $4,999 / 3,999 Lux Trail CF 8: 4,749 / $5,999 / 4,999 Lux Trail CF 9: 5,699 / $6,999 / 5,999
