Quanta Capital Junior Tour of Ireland Stage 3, Ennis to Whitegate, 102.4kmThe McCrystal name has been written across Irish cycling for the best part of two decades. Today, Thursday in East Clare, a new one was added to it.Rian McCrystal produced the ride of his young career on the road to Whitegate, winning Stage 3 of the Quanta Capital Junior Tour of Ireland and taking the yellow jersey of race leader in the process.The Cycling Ireland rider stayed with the sharp end of the race over the days two categorised climbs and outsprinted the Hot Tubes pair of Alex Botha and Cormac Nagle to take the stage in 2h0534, the 102.4km covered at an average of almost 49kph.He is the son of Bryan McCrystal, and the nephew of Eve McCrystal one of the most decorated cyclists Ireland has produced, the Paralympic champion who piloted Katie-George Dunlevy to gold on the tandem and gathered world titles and national championships along the way.Bryans own record is that of a rider who has never quite gone away. A time triallist by trade, he was fourth in the national road race championship in 2014 and fifth in the national time trial in both 2013 and 2016, a season in which he also finished second on a stage of Rs Tailteann and second in that races King of the Mountains competition. He rode for the Continental outfit Holdsworth Pro Racing in 2018.At 45, he is still at it. This May he lined out at Rs Tailteann once more, finishing 88th overall, and in March he took third at the Coombes Connor. Ten years after his father came within a wheel of a Rs stage win, Rian went one better on Irish roads.A day that reshaped the raceMcCrystals win did more than claim a stage. He now leads the general classification on 5h4355, two seconds clear of Stage 1 winner Glen Gregory Koiv, with Botha a further two seconds back in third the tightest of margins with three stages still to run.He also tops the points competition on 33, and leads the First Year Junior classification.
