Sixteen-year-old Freddie Winkley (Harrogate Nova Race Team) took his first national title in a three-up uphill sprint as the 2026 Cycling Ireland Junior Mens Road Race National Championship opened the championship weekend in Cong, Co. Mayo, hosted by Cunga CC over 111.6 km in wind and rain.After a stop-start race of repeated attacks, Winkley edged James Armstrong (Rgion Sud Cycling Academy) and Hugh g Mulhearne (AS Villemur Cyclisme) at the line. It came to a sprint and I was thinking Im in bother here Ive not been sprinting well lately, but when one of them launched I just went for it and it worked out, said Winkley afterwards.
