Video highlights how cycle paths can aid independence for people using mobility devices
Limerick City and County Council has released a video that explains, from the perspective of a mobility device user, how protected cycle paths can aid accessibility for people using mobility devicesThe council said: In this short film, Gabrielle N Bhriain shared how accessible paths and cycle lanes support her to travel independently around Limerick using her mobility scooter, from everyday journeys to the shop or the Irish Wheelchair Association to other places around the city, as far as the University of Limerick. Before explaining more, heres the video where Gabrielle explains it in her own words:It can also be found on Instagram.Limerick City and County Councils active travel team said: With sincere thanks to Gabrielle for her time, insight and inspiring positivity. Her experience shows us that cycle lanes are used by more than people on bikes alone. When designed and delivered to a high standard, they can function as shared mobility routes, supporting people who are cycling as well as those using wheelchairs, mobility scooters or mobility aids, the council said.It also underlines the importance of a connected and integrated network. Connectivity gaps, older infrastructure and uneven surfaces can limit how people move, while well-designed, continuous and level paths can significantly improve everyday accessibility, the council said. They added: In Active Travel, our focus is on delivering a range of projects that improve safety, accessibility and continuity. This includes new and upgraded footpaths and cycle lanes, junction and crossing improvements, addressing legacy infrastructure constraints, and improving how routes link together, creating a connected network, in line with the objectives set out in the LimerickShannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy.
