Garda conduct 10 raids after hijackings on Dublin greenway, covert patrols used to identify suspects
Hijackings and robberies on the Grand Canal Greenway around Clondalkin in Dublin have prompted Garda to conduct what they referred to as a high-intensity policing operation with 10 raids and two teenagers arrested.Garda said that they have seized two electric bicycles and a bank card that are believed to have been stolen, and other items, including two e-scooters suspected of being used during robberies. Photos posted online also include an electric scrambler-like motorcycle. The urban greenway, under the control of South Dublin County Council, has been the most problematic for years, with reports of hijackings and assaults reported by this website and others. Users have repeatedly complained that barrier points on the greenway are where people are ambushed, but this has fallen on deaf ears in terms of a response from the council, who see it purely as a policing issue. Officers attached to the Serious Crime South and Community Engagement units in Clondalkin conducted the operation along the Grand Canal Greenway between Killeen Road, Dublin 10 and Grangecastle, Dublin 22.The Grand Canal Greenway is a busy route used by walkers, runners and commuters on bicycles, e-bikes and e-scooters.In response to hijacking incidents of vehicles along the Grand Canal Greenway, Garda have been engaged in a combination of covert and proactive patrols to identify suspects, said a statement posted on the official An Garda Sochna Dublin page on Facebook. The statement, posted yesterday, said: Today, Garda executed 10 search warrants at domestic residences in Ballyfermot, Clondalkin, Kilmainham and Lucan. During the course of the operation, Garda seized two electric bicycles suspected to be stolen, two e-scooters suspected to be used during robberies, 3 electric bicycle batteries with the serial numbers removed, electronic devices of evidential value and a bank card believed to have been stolen. In addition, Garda arrested two juveniles in connection with this investigation.Garda said that the policing operation is a targeted collaborative approach involving the Serious Crime South Detective Units and Crime Task Force, which was supported by the Clondalkin Community Engagement unit as part of Operation Meacn. The statement added: The aim of Operation Meacn is to tackle the use of electric vehicles such as e-motorcycles which are being used for criminal activity including drug dealing, money laundering, transporting firearms, Drug Related Intimidation (DRI) and other serious offences.IMAGES: Photos from Garda.
