After criticisms of delays, council confirms new section of South East Greenway to open
Billed as eventually connecting the Norman Town of New Ross to the Viking city of Waterford, the latest section of the along-awaited South East Greenway is due to open this month. The 7km section from Waterford City to Curraghmore has been substantially complete for the last 12 months, but is awaiting the construction of car parks on both ends, and other elements. The delays with the project, which runs through parts of Wexford, Waterford, and Kilkenny, seem to be mainly linked to Waterfords North Quays development.Kieran Kelly, an admin of the popular Greenways Ireland Group on Facebook, said: Delays on the South East Greenway are no longer just frustrating theyre unacceptable. In a recent post, he said: Businesses in New Ross were depending on this project to bring tourism and income, but continued delays mean some are now struggling, with real fears of closures or being forced to sell.IMAGE: The ramp down to the greenway at North Quays in Waterford. Above and main images thanks to Gerard Murphy.Theres still no clear timeline for full completion, and funding being drip-fed year by year only adds to the uncertainty. Greenways work but only when theyre actually delivered, he said.A spokesperson for Kilkenny County Council said: In summary, the completed South East Greenway, connecting New Ross to Waterford City, will deliver 24km of segregated greenway. To date, 14km of greenway are now substantially completed. Phase 1, New Ross to Glenmore, was opened in July 2023, while Phase 2, Curraghmore to Ferrybank, is expected to open at the end of this month. The opening of the latter was always dependent on a suitable access point from the Abbey Road area in Ferrybank. This access point, along with a small temporary trailhead carpark, is being provided for under the North Quays development, and the Greenway Team continue to engage with Waterford City & County Council on this matter, the spokesperson said. The council said that over 2025 and in Q1 2026, what it called finishing out works have continued on Phase 2 of the route. This includes completion of a temporary trailhead carpark at Curraghmore, safety measures at road crossing points, boundary treatment with adjoining landholdings, and among other works. The spokesperson added: Detail design works and engagement with adjoining landowners also continues the remaining sections of greenway to be completed, and the next works tender for Phase 3, Red Bridge Mountelliot Tunnel, is expected to be advertised later this year.
