Active travel project tracker launched in Cork as routes delivered in isolation are disjointed
Transparency and accountability are the goals of a new active travel project tracker released by campaigners in Cork.Named the NTA Fund Allocation Tracker, the tracker is aimed to provide an accessible overview of how active travel funding is being allocated and progressed across Corks five wards. The campaign thinks the tracker should be useful for its own members, stakeholders, and the wider public to better understand where investment is being made and see where gaps remain.Kjeld van den Heuvel, a spokesperson for the Cork Cycling Campaign, said: The increase in funding over the last 6 years for active travel is very welcome. But delivering complex infrastructure projects takes time and comes with challenges. Thats exactly why transparency matters. He added: By tracking funding and progress, we can help ensure that investment delivers real, connected improvements for Cork. The new tracker marks an important step in ensuring that every euro invested in active travel contributes to a connected and effective cycling network. The Cork Cycling Campaign said that While recent progress in areas such as the east of the city, including the Marina Promenade and Mahon schemes, shows what can be achieved, the overall pattern of investment remains fragmented. The Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (2017) identified a connected network of primary cycle routes as a priority. However, many current projects continue to be delivered in isolation, leaving cyclists navigating disjointed and, at times, unsafe routes. The campaign said it is encouraging members of the public to use the tracker to engage with local Ward Councillors and TDs. By highlighting stalled projects and identifying missing links in the network, communities can advocate more effectively for a coherent and timely rollout of cycling infrastructure. The campaigners said that while they accept that large projects like BusConnects will take time to deliver, in the meantime, targeted, shorter-term interventions are needed to address immediate safety concerns particularly at junctions where cycle lanes currently end abruptly. The Cork Cycling Campaign added that it is calling on the public to contribute updates from across the city and help keep the tracker accurate. Tips on project progress, delays, or new developments can be shared via the campaigns social media channels or by email at info@corkcyclingcampaign.com.
