Hitting one of those metrics is difficult. Delivering all three, consistently, is significantly harder, says Alex Trimnell, Muc Offs CEO.A waxed chain is generally considered to offer lower friction than a lubed one, but hot waxing is a bit of a faff.Drip wax uses a liquid carrier to apply the wax to the chain. Its a lot easier to apply, but the chain still needs to be carefully cleaned first and the chain needs to be allowed to cure and the carrier liquid to evaporate before riding.Muc Off says its taken four years for its R&D lab to perfect the Dark Energy wax. Over that time, its tested over 90 formulations, with over 10,000 hours of testing.Muc Offs testing protocol included measuring the coefficient of friction for its sample formulations, followed by extended lab running and quantification of drivetrain wear using contour interferometry to measure microscopic wear scars.It has also commissioned independent testing in Germany and the UK to validate the waxs performance.In addition, its sponsored pros from EF Pro Cycling, Decathlon CMA CGM and other teams have ridden over 10,000km with the Dark Energy wax. Naomi Regg of EF Education-Oatly was using the wax when she won the womens Tour Down Under in January. This is designed to remove factory grease from a new chain, as well as other oils and spent chain wax from a used chain.
