Stunning new CAAD14 goes back to Cannondales alloy bike roots
CyclistStunning new CAAD14 goes back to Cannondales alloy bike rootsCannondale has launched the CAAD14 road bike, which goes back to the brands alloy bike basics with an oversized round-tubed frameset that still incorporates modern features such as integrated cabling and wide clearance. Cannondales tagline for the new bike is not carbon, not sorry. The CAAD14 is the latest iteration of Cannondales long-running aluminium bike series, which stretches all the way back to the CAAD, an alloy mountain bike launched in 1996 and before that to 1983, when the brand launched the ST 500, its first aluminium frame, when bikes were invariably made of steel. The CAAD morphed into a road race bike in the late 1990s and saw success with the Saeco team of Mario Cippolini, with Ivan Gotti winning the Giro dItalia in 1997 on a CAAD3. Grand tours were still being won on alloy Cannondales in 2003 and 2004, when other teams had already switched to carbon frames. But as the CAAD series has evolved, successive generations had become increasingly similar to Cannondales carbon bikes. The last generation CAAD13 turned into something of a SuperSix Evo wannabe, with dropped seat stays and aero profile tubing. Before that, the CAAD12 mirrored the then-current SuperSix Evo too, at a time before aero went mainstream.Back to alloy basicsCannondale says that the CAAD14 isnt trying to be a price point imitation of carbon though, instead bringing out the ride qualities of a well-designed alloy frame, which it characterises as stiffness, explosiveness and razor-sharp handling, with pared down, lean looks.Theres a return to oversized round tubing and a more classic CAAD profile with a double diamond frame.Tyre clearance is 32mm, theres a UDH dropout and a threaded BSA bottom bracket, along with a 27.2mm seatpost. As with Cannondales other latest generation bikes, this marks a return to established industry standards no more BB30a with Ai offset. There are no mudguard mounts either.Although the CAAD14 frame has gone back to Cannondales roots, the brand hasnt totally forsaken its more recent tech.Theres the same Delta steerer as used by the SuperSix Evo, which allows Cannondale to keep the head tube narrow. It offers full internal cabling and provides compatibility with Cannondales range of integrated one-piece bars and its stems with internal cable routing, as well as standard stems with an adapter kit.
