Discovering Sri Lanka On Two Wheels
UPDATED March 5, 2026 BY Guest Author IN Tea Route no comments Discovering Sri Lanka On Two WheelsPraveen Jayakaran was the Content Creator on the 2026 Tea Route Cycling Tour. After completing the first leg of the Tea Route Cycling Tour Tour, riding from Indias west coast to the east, we boarded a flight from Chennai to Colombo to begin the second chapter of our journey Sri Lanka. Like many first-time visitors to the country, I carried along a few assumptions: another tropical island, beautiful beaches, busy cities. Travelling across the country on a bicycle, however, alongside a passionate group of riders completely transformed the way I perceived this island nation. My very first impression was striking. The streets were exceptionally clean and free of litter. Well-laid pavement, clearly marked roads and disciplined traffic instantly stood out. Vehicles stopped willingly for pedestrians, traffic rules were respected and the roads flowed with calm order. It was a refreshing contrast to the constant chaos of urban life back home in India.Even deep within the countryside amongst small villages, we couldnt find discarded trash or neglected public spaces. Cleanliness seemed deeply ingrained in everyday life. Regardless of education or social status, people took pride in their surroundings a cultural value passed down through generations.Coming from India, a land of vibrant contrasts, intense diversity, and what we lovingly call organized chaos, this sense of calm felt surreal. In Sri Lanka, the population felt balanced, honking was rare and purposeful, traffic moved smoothly and people carried an unhurried rhythm as though life here wasnt a race, but a journey meant to be savoured. The Buddhist principle of compassion toward all living beings is evident everywhere. Stray dogs and cats wander freely, coexisting without fear or aggression almost playfully rewriting the rules of Tom and Jerry. As we rode through towns and villages, warmth followed us everywhere. Locals greeted us with genuine smiles, curiosity, and kindness. Children waved enthusiastically, their excitement was contagious. On several occasions, local cyclists on simple single-speed bikes joined us for a few kilometres, sharing laughter, stories, and fleeting, yet unforgettable, moments of connection.Nature here is raw, abundant and breathtaking. Our rides through the countryside often crossed paths with elephants, monitor lizards, dancing peacocks, and families of mongooses darting across the road. For bird lovers, this land is paradise, alive with colour, sound, and motion. For those drawn to the ocean, Sri Lanka is a surfers dream. Each beach reveals its own personality from gentle, rolling waves to powerful breaks. Surf culture thrives along the coast, where golden sunsets paint the sky and every moment feels worthy of a postcard. The beaches welcome travellers with open arms and an easy, infectious charm. The islands archaeological treasures add depth to its beauty. Ancient Buddhist monasteries, rock sculptures and intricate wood carvings speak of an advanced civilization rooted in spirituality and craftsmanship. Walking among these ruins, surrounded by birdsong, towering Bodhi trees and serene Buddha statues, is profoundly calming. These sacred trees hold special meaning, believed to descend from the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. If life grants me another chance to return here, I would gladly choose to wander these roads again pedalling through quiet villages, golden coastlines, misty hills and endless kindness. Sri Lanka is not just a destination; it is a feeling, a rhythm and a memory that stays long after the journey ends.RELATEDTOURTea Route Tea.
