New Cinelli Aeroscoop is one of the worlds fastest aero bikes
CyclistNew Cinelli Aeroscoop is one of the worlds fastest aero bikesCinelli claims its new Aeroscoop is one of the worlds fastest aero road bikes, according to wind-tunnel testing by Tour Magazin. The Aeroscoop made the respected German publications top ten quickest road bikes, outperforming the Specialized Tarmac SL8 S-Works by five watts at 45kmh. Claimed to weigh as little as 6.98kg in size medium, the Italian aero bike is competitive on the scales too.As this comparison suggests, the Aeroscoop sits at the top of the road bike market. The entry-level model with Shimano 105 Di2 and alloy Fulcrum Soniq wheels costs 6,000 while the top spec Campagnolo and SRAM models will set you back 10,700. From launch, only the 5,299 Ultegra Di2 build with Mavic Cosmic S wheels and the 3,999 frameset will be available in the UK. Despite its apparent aero prowess, the Aeroscoop is still recognisably a Cinelli and will be available in two block colour schemes like most of its range. We tested the bike at the launch in Milan and weve written a first ride review.Cinelli Aeroscoop frame and designTo design the Aeroscoop, Cinelli used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), a kind of aerodynamic modelling, on its existing performance road bike, the Pressure 2, to identify areas of improvement. As a result, the Aeroscoop looks far slippier and presents 4% less frontal area, according to the brand. This reduction principally comes from a narrower head tube, which tapers deeply backwards into a thinner edge, the integrated fork crown, and the skinny fork legs. The way these curve out and back in is reminiscent of, but less extreme than, the wide-stance fork on Factors as-yet-unreleased aero bike. Most distinctively the Aeroscoops dropped seat stays divide in two just before meeting the squared-off seat tube into which the seatpost clamp is integrated. Product manager Fabrizio Aghito says: The gap sucks in air, reducing the creation of turbulence like wings on a plane. He adds that their thinness causes the split seat stays to flex a little to improve seated comfort without hindering responsiveness.Cinelli hasnt gone as far as Trek and more recently Wilier with the Filante SLR in creating its own aero bottles for the Aeroscoop. But Aghito says, We enlarged this [lower] section of the down tube in order to shield the bottle.Columbus, Cinellis sister component brand, supplies the new one-piece, fully integrated Spirit cockpit, which is claimed to weigh 350g. It has thin tops and hoods are 3cm narrower than the shallow drops to reduce the riders frontal drag. FSAs standard 1-1/8in headset fully conceals cables and a proprietary headset cover smooths the transition from head tube to handlebar.Tubes curve around both wheels to direct air flowing off them downwards away from the rest of the frame and rider. The lower part of the seat tube bends around the rear wheel and Cinelli has carved material off the Kammtail down tube next to the front tyre. These cutaways also contribute to the Aeroscoops clearance for 34mm-wide tyres, which is on the broad side for an aero bike. Cinelli settled on this figure with input from Vittoria to future-proof the frame against increasing road racing tyre width.Cinelli also looked to improve on the weight and stiffness of the Pressure 2. A mixture of Toray carbon grades make up the Aeroscoops UCI-approved frame, claimed to weigh 950g in size medium with paint versus the Pressure 2s 1050g. T700 provides strength and some flex, T800 increases stiffness in important areas and T1100 maximises rigidity in the highest stress spots. Cinelli also claims to have made the Aeroscoops fork 55g lighter than the Pressures.Aghito says: We added stiffness in the bottom bracket area and rear stays because this area transfers the power from the pedals to the rear wheel. The Aeroscoops oversized bottom bracket, which uses the T47 standard known for its rigidity, gives a visual clue to this design. To improve the Aeroscoops aerodynamics in crosswinds, in some areas, such as the top tube, Cinelli limited the frames cross section. On paper this works, adds Aghito, but in reality it puts you in danger because any time you touch this section you can compromise stiffness. By playing with different fibres and their direction, you can maintain the stiffness. However, feedback from the MBH Bank Ballan CSB Colpack team, who race the Pressure 2, led Cinelli to reduce the head tube stiffness because they found it prone to oversteer on fast descents. We reduced a little bit the stiffness in the front part because our riders said this caused theman oversteering when they went down a curve at high speed, adds Aghito. Short chainstays and wheelbase should keep the back of the bike snappy. The Aeroscoop comes in only five frame sizes, which cover quite a narrow height range. Smaller riders may find the XS, which equates to a 52cm top tube, too big. The large frame is equivalent to a 58cm in other brands sizes, who often sell a bigger frame.Dimensions of the integrated cockpit are also limited with the smallest bike getting the same width handlebar as the second largest: XS: 90x380mm, S:100x380mm, M: 10x380mm, L:110x380mm, XL:120x400mm. Cinelli says consumers may be able to change from the stock size at a dealers discretion.Cinelli Aeroscoops aero performanceCinelli took the prototype Aeroscoop to Tour Magazins wind tunnel where it underwent third-party testing. The protocol there involves placing a dummy on the frame fitted with standardised wheels Zipp 404 which spin as the air hits them at 45kmh. Averaged out across yaw angles ranging from -20 to 20 degrees, Tour calculated that the Aeroscoop produced 207 watts of drag at this speed. While Tour says its wind tunnels air flow has +/-0.5% accuracy and its procedure is becoming the industry standard, it comes with some caveats. The necessity to control variables means bikes are not tested with the wheel youd buy them with, indeed what the bike brand may have optimised the frame to be ridden with. Moreover, Cinelli wont say exactly where the Aeroscoop placed. In some respects, the Tarmac SL8 is a valid comparison because both are sub-7kg aero all-rounders in race trim as opposed to hyper aero bikes whose extraordinarily deep tubes reduce drag but add weight. However, this does mean Cinelli isnt comparing the Aeroscoop to the absolute fastest aero road bikes.Aghito acknowledges this, but in rivalling a brand of Specializeds calibre he says: We know we are back among the big ones.Cinelli Aeroscoop spec and buildsThe fully internally routed frame is for electronic groupsets only and uses SRAMs Universal Derailleur Hanger.Campagnolos return to form means an Italian frame and groupset combo is possible in the 10,700 Super Record WRL build. For the same price, the SRAM Red AXS spec is the lightest at a claimed 6.98kg. The Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 model is 9,900.They all have 57mm-deep Fulcrum Wind wheels fitted with 700x28c Vittoria Rubino tyres, and a Columbus Spirit bar/stem including an under-stem computer mount. The mid-range Ultegra Di2 build and the entry-level 105 Di2 build have the same cockpit as the pricier models but drop down to Fulcrum Soniq aluminium wheels and Vittoria Zaffiro Pro tyres.Colour-wise, you can choose from Coral White or Purple Fibre.Cinelli Aeroscoop Super Record WRLPrice: 10,700Groupset: Campagnolo Super Record WRLBars/stem: Columbus Spirit IntegratedWheels: Fulcrum Wind 57Cinelli Aeroscoop SRAM Red AXSPrice: 10,700Groupset: SRAM Red AXSBars/stem: Columbus Spirit IntegratedWheels: Fulcrum Wind 57Cinelli Aeroscoop Dura-Ace Di2Price: 9,900Groupset: Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9270Bars/stem: Columbus Spirit IntegratedWheels: Fulcrum Wind 57Cinelli Aeroscoop Ultegra Disc Di2Price: 5,299 / 6,900Groupset: Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8170Bars/stem: Columbus Spirit IntegratedWheels: Mavic Cosmic SL (UK) / Fulcrum Soniq AL (Europe)Cinelli Aeroscoop 105 Di2Price: 6,000Groupset: Shimano 105 Di2 R7150Bars/stem: Columbus Spirit IntegratedWheels: Fulcrum Soniq ALThe post New Cinelli Aeroscoop is one of the worlds fastest aero bikes appeared first on Cyclist.
