Munster Criterium Championships Limerick Racecourse 11th August 2024Greenmount Cycling Academy held their final Criterium Race day of 2024 in warm and overcast conditions at Limerick Racecourse. Championship Races were run with Munster Criterium medals up for grabs. There was a stiff Southern wind making things difficult for riders on the 4% incline on the back straight. Racing started at 10am with the U8/10 race and continued throughout the day.In the Masters/Womens Championship Race the M50/60/Women riders started with a lap advantage over the M40 riders. The M50/60/Womens group quickly splintered with the Black House Racing M50 trio Dermot Radford, Sean Buckley and Derek Cullen powering ahead of the others. Establishing a 20 second lead after 2 laps. Behind the M40 bunch co-operated together and had the horsepower to close the gap to the remains of the M50/60/Womens group after 20 mins. Up front the Black House Racing trio worked well together and the gap increased throughout the race finish with Buckley, Cullen and Radford taking the medals in that order and the team prize..In the race for the Womens Championship medals, Kate Murphy (Sliabh Luachra CC) finished in the M40 bunch taking gold, followed by West Clare duo Deirde Hynes and Margie OConnor. Eva Donovan taking the Masters Women gold.In the Elite mens race all riders started together. A fast and furious start resulted in Mark McGlynn (Killarney CC), Ross Lee (Burren CC), Ben Murphy (Sliabh Luachra CC) and Oliver Dumoulin (OLeary Stone CC) breaking away with James Hanranhan (West Clare CC) and Samuel Luke (Newcastlewest CC) eventually joining them. These 6 were working well together and built a 35s lead. At the halfway point the duo of Willem OConnor and Maximilian Fitzgerald who were chasing, broke free from the bunch and took off in pursuit. Both juniors are riding for the Dutch JEGG DJR Academy team. They made the junction within 4 laps leaving 8 riders up front.James Hanrahan, Willem OConnor and Maximilian Fitzgerald then broke free, building a sizable lead. The JEGG duo left Hanrahan with 4 laps to go. He finished strongly to take bronze and keep ahead of the rest of the field. Ahead the junior riders took the gold and silver medals finishing together.A massive thanks to all the riders, parents, stewards and supporters who made it a successful Munster Criterium Championships 2024 at Limerick Racecourse.
