Who are the favourites for the Tour de France Femmes 2024?
CyclistWho are the favourites for the Tour de France Femmes 2024?The Tour de France Femmes is now in its third year, and the 2024 edition will begin on Monday 12th August in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and finish atop Alpe dHuez on Sunday 18th August. In 2023 it was Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) who took the yellow jersey by 3min 03sec ahead of teammate Lotte Kopecky. Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) completed the podium in third, on the same time overall as Kopecky and wearing the polka dot jersey for the mountains classification too. Here are the riders who will be looking to win the Tour de France Femmes yellow jersey this time around.Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime)A.S.O./Charly LopezDefending champion Demi Vollering climbed to victory last year with a dramatic penultimate stage finish on the Col du Tourmalet, where, through the mist and fog, she hauled her way into the maillot jaune. She had recovered from a 20 second time penalty earlier in the race for drafting her team car.Such frustrating mistakes will surely be in the back mirror as she looks to defend her title and become the only woman so far to do so. In typical Vollering fashion, the 27-year-old has been running riot at stage races this season, winning La Vuelta Femenina, Vuelta a Burgos and the recent Tour de Suisse. Even at the three-day Itzulia, she swept the overall, points and mountains classifications. She will line up alongside teammates such as Blanka Vas, Lorena Wiebes and Niamh Fisher-Black. This looks set to be her last Tour de France Femmes for SD Worx-Protime and shell want to leave on a high. I hate racing for second: Elisa Longo Borghini profile Tour de France Femmes 2024: Route, how to watch and all you need to know Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek)La PresseElisa Longo Borghini has had a brilliant year so far, winning her first maglia rosa at the Giro dItalia Women in July. She led the race in its entirety after taking victory on the Stage 1 individual time-trial. However, Longo Borghini apologised for her performance at the Olympics after finishing ninth in the road race, saying, Its not the result I wanted, and that she didnt have the legs to challenge for a medal. With the first stages being flat this year, it should work in her favour as the mountains arrive towards the end of the race.At the 2023 Tour de France Femmes, the Italian road race champion was forced to abandon ahead of Stage 7 while in fourth place due to an infection in her left leg. With an absence of injuries, she is an attacking force on the bike thats captivating to watch and will be leading a Lidl-Trek team that comprises the likes of Elisa Balsamo, Shirin van Anrooij and Ellen van Dijk. Like Vollering, Longo Borghini looks set to be on the move for next year.Lidl-Treks Gaia Realini is also one to watch. The 23-year-old rode to a memorable victory alongside Longo Borghini at the UAE Tour Women in 2023 and finished on the podium of the Tour de lAvenir last year too. She is consistent in stage races, finishing seventh overall at the Tour de Suisse and Giro dItalia Women.Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM)A.S.O./Charly LopezA memorable victory at La Flche Wallonne ended an almost five-year winless streak on the road and has been a defining moment of Kasia Niewiadomas season so far.In the last edition of the Tour de France Femmes, Niewiadoma burst into life in the mountains, winning the mountains classification and crossing the line in second to Vollering on the Tourmalet queen stage after a brave attack. She finished third overall for the second year in a row and heads to this years Tour de France Femmes with ambitions set on the yellow jersey.Niewiadoma will receive strong support from Elise Chabbey and Neve Bradbury, the latter another strong card for Canyon-SRAM to play. Bradbury finished on the podium at the Giro dItalia Women this year and should be in the thick of the action on Alpe dHuez on Stage 8, a parcours similar to her stage win on Blockhaus at the Giro.Juliette Labous (DSM-Firmenich-PostNL)A.S.O./Jennifer LindiniFrench road race champion Juliette Labous has been incredibly consistent this year, just missing the overall podium with a fourth place at La Vuelta Femenina and fifth place at the Giro dItalia Women. This also mimics her placings at previous editions of the Tour de France Femmes, where she finished fourth overall in 2022 and fifth in 2023.Labous has a strong chance to take that next step and hit the podium for the 2024 edition of the race as the DSM-Firmenich-PostNL team also eye stage wins with sprinter Charlotte Kool. This will be her last Tour de France Femmes with her squad too as she recently announced a move to FDJ-Suez for next season.Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-Suez)Tim de Waele/Getty ImagesSpeaking of FDJ-Suez, the French team will be heading to their home race with Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig and vita Muzic in tow. Uttrup Ludwig won a memorable stage to pernay back in 2022, and with a seventh place finish in both 2022 and 2023 shell be aiming for another strong GC result. She had a less-than-ideal start to the season by fracturing her sacrum at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and missed weeks of racing as a result but finished eighth overall at the Giro dItalia Women. Uttrup Ludwig is yet another who looks to be on the move with rumours shes joining Canyon-SRAM in 2025.Muzic told Cyclist in a recent interview that she is looking to complete the triple with a stage win at the Tour de France Femmes and leave with a strong result on GC. She knows the pressures that come with being a French rider in a French team at a French race but says, Ive learnt to ride with it.FDJ-Suezs Grace Brown will also be on the start line after winning a gold medal in the individual time-trial at the Olympic Games. Itll be her last Tour de France Femmes following her announcement to retire at the end of the season and shell be looking to make the most of it. Hopefully on a gold bike for the TT.Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal)A.S.O./Charly LopezIn comparison to last year, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio has had a quieter first half to the season, and breaking her vertebrae at the Volta a Catalunya Femenina hasnt helped. Her first race back was straight in at the deep end with the Olympics, where she finished 33rd in the road race for South Africa.38-year-old Moolman Pasio is leading a strong AG Insurance-Soudal team that contains Sarah Gigante, Kim Le Court and Anya Louw.Mavi Garca (Liv-AlUla-Jayco)Unipublic/SprintCyclingAgencyMavi Garca will be aiming for a strong result at the Tour de France Femmes having finished tenth overall in 2022. She rode to third overall at the early-season UAE Tour and ninth at the Giro dItalia Women, and shes heading to the start line in good form having recently placed sixth at the Olympics road race.40-year-old Garca brings plenty of racing experience with her. Theres a stability to her Grand Tour racing, following up a ninth place overall at La Vuelta Femenina in 2023 with a seventh place at the Giro dItalia Women. For more on the Tour de France Femmes, visit our hub page.
