Winspaces new 700g SLC3 climbing bike is light on the scales and your wallet
Winspace has revealed the next generation of its climbing bike at Eurobike 2024.The new SLC3 makes several improvements over the outgoing SLC2.0, according to Winspace. It shaves weight, and increases stiffness and comfort, while retaining an attractive price tag.The Chinese brand says the new climbing bike should be available in a few weeks, but it only had an SLC3 frameset on display at Eurobike rather than a complete bike.Low weight and low priceThe SLC3 frameset weighs a claimed 700g. - Stan Portus / Our MediaWinspace says the new SLC3 frame weighs a claimed 700g unpainted in a size medium, which is 80g lighter than its predecessor.Speaking to BikeRadar at Eurobike, Winspaces Fred Zou explained how the brand has reduced the weight partly through a change to a better material. While the SLC2.0 uses Torays T800 and T700 carbon fibres, the SLC3 uses Torays T1100 and T1000 high-modulus carbon fibres.Zhou says an exact price is to be confirmed but we can expect the SLC3 frameset to cost roughly $2,000. This is around $500 more than the SLC2.0, but still much cheaper than similar framesets from bigger cycling brands.Greater stiffnessThe dropouts are covered. - Stan Portus / Our MediaThe SLC3 uses a one-piece moulding process to increase stiffness.Compared to the SLC2.0, Winspace says the SLC3s head tube is 31.8 per cent stiffer, while the bottom bracket shell is said to be 36 per cent stiffer.Like the SLC2.0, Winspace says its new climbing bike also has an asymmetrical design for stiffness and, Zou says, driving performance. The bike also has what Winspace calls an Optimised Rear Centre design to aid power transfer. We dont have details yet, but Zou says Winspace has tweaked the geometry to make the SLC3 more comfortable than the SLC2.0.Frame featuresThe SLC3 uses a round 27.2mm seatpost. - Stan Portus / Our MediaThe SLC3 frameset shares similar features with Winspaces other road bikes. The frameset has dropped seatstays that kink to a horizontal position where they meet the seat tube. This is the same as the seatstays on Winspaces all-rounder C5 road bike and its T1550 aero bike.Winspace conceals the thru-axle dropouts on the driveside on SLC3 and its other disc-brake road bikes a feature thats similar to BMCs Stealth Dropout Design. The SLC3 routes all cables and hoses internally. It seems like these will also run through the bikes handlebar. All these features mean the SLC3 is like many of the latest and greatest road bikes. However, the SLC3 differs in one regard. Instead of using a proprietary seatpost now common on many carbon bikes the SLC3 uses a standard round 27.2mm post.Second-generation Winspace T1550 aero road bikeWinspace also has its second-generation T1550 aero road bike on display. - Stan Portus / Our MediaAlso on display at Winspaces Eurobike stand is its second-generation T1550 aero road bike. The Winspace Women Cycling Team raced the bike at La Vuelta Feminina and Paris-Roubaix Femme.Like the SLC3, Winspace says its latest aero road bike is lighter and stiffer than its predecessor. No surprises there, then.Winspace says the bike shed 50g in weight, which is 6 per cent lighter than the previous model. The rear triangle stiffness has increased by 36 per cent, according to Winspace, while the bottom bracket is 7 per cent stiffer and the head tube is 33 per cent stiffer than before. We're used to seeing bike brands make bold claims about their latest machines, so there's nothing unusual going on here. The proof is in the ride, of course, and Winspace is an intriguing brand that we're keen to see more of.

Iconic Dutch Windmills: Their Many Uses & How They Work
UPDATED July 4, 2024BY Guest AuthorINPub Ride no comments Iconic Dutch Windmills: Their Many Uses & How They WorkJonathan Ruchlis was the Content Creator on the 2024 Pub Ride Cycling Tour. In this report, he examines the story behind one of Europes most iconic images the Dutch windmill.Bike touring is a great way to take in an area, not just the recognizable destinations, but also everything that comes in between. On a long tour, you tend to get a sense for the distinctive features of landscapes and countrysides in different regions and how they change slowly but surely with each day of riding. Along the Pub Ride route, while biking through the Netherlands (and a bit of Germany as well) we enjoyed lots of nice views of the old windmills that checker the countryside. Theyre beautiful, massive, historical (between roughly 150 and 800 years old), awesome feats of engineering, and some of them are still functioning. But what do they do exactly and how do they work?As it turns out, there are multiple answers to that question. One group of mills, known as Industrial mills are used for grinding grain, sawing wood, making pigments and paper, or other production and processing tasks. Grinding grains is probably the most common industrial usage and functions by harnessing the rotation of the windmills blades into rotating one large stone that sits on top of another stationary as the grains are poured through (video example).Sawmills, on the other hand, transfer the energy from the rotating blades into a linear movement, an arm that moves up and down using a crankshaft. Similar mechanisms are also utilized in water mills, sewing machines engines, and steering systems. The crankshaft attaches to a saw that moves up and down and the extra energy from the saw is frequently harnessed to reel the log in through the saw blades (video example). The development of this efficient way of splitting wood was quite significant to Dutch shipbuilding in the 1600s.However, the type of mill that is most unique to the Netherlands is known as a polder mill. The function of polder mills is to pump water to drain the land. These mills were crucial in water management in the country for centuries. About a quarter of The Netherlands, whose name means lower-lying land, is below sea level. Without windmills that pumped the water and the modern day infrastructure that has replaced much of the work of the windmills (but not all), much of the farmland in The Netherlands would be underwater! The technology of polder mills has improved over the centuries in The Netherlands.Initially, they used a paddle wheel, but this was limited in effectiveness and soon more efficient techniques were developed. First, a group of paddle wheel windmills, known as a molengang, was used to lift the water further than one paddle wheel windmill could alone. Eventually, that technique was replaced by using an Archimedean screw instead of a paddle wheel, which allowed for much greater efficiency (video example). These windmills and their history add so much, both visually and in terms of living history to the Dutch countryside. If I traveled the area again, I would go see the insides of some, especially those that are still functioning. Those that are open to the public fly a blue flag and on National Windmill Day you can also visit mills that arent typically open to the public. There are also some where you can stay overnight. Theres a trip just waiting to be planned!RELATEDTOURPub RideOver 5 weeks well cycle from storied Dublin to the waterfront of Copenhagen.
