RockShoxs machine-learning Flight Attendant moves to Charger 3.1 damper and debuts on DH-spec Vivid shock
RockShox has given Flight Attendant, its state-of-the-art automatic electronic suspension adjustment system, a major upgrade. Its now paired with the recently launched Charger 3.1 damper, moving away from the bladder design of the discontinued Charger 2.1, which remained available on Flight Attendant Pike, Lyrik and ZEB forks until today.Moving to Charger 3.1 across the fork range except the SID, which has its own Flight Attendant Charger Race Day 2 damper the new forks get access to the re-tuned low-speed compression damping touted to improve performance.Beyond the reworked compression tune, the latest Charger 3.1 damper tech boasts user-tuneable compression and rebound, with valve kits available to purchase separately. The top cap of the new Charger 3.1 Flight Attendant damper displays which mode it's in and gives you the option to adjust settings. - RockShoxRockShox confirmed the Charger 3.1 Flight Attendant dampers can be retuned with either alight, medium or heavy rebound valving like non-Flight Attendant forks but only has one compression tune. The compression tune's low-speed range is similar to the standard damper, while the high speed is set slightly firmer. All the MY25 Flight Attendant forks also get the same reworked bushings as their non-electric counterparts.By working on its tolerances and factory processes, SRAM says these are claimed to reduce friction, which improves comfort and traction. While the forks hydraulic internals have been updated, externally their looks remain unchanged.Equally, all the new machine-learning tech that was launched when SID got the electronic treatment, such as Adaptive Ride Dynmaics, Bias Adjust, Effort Zones and Override Mode, remain unchanged.RockShox's latest programming updates are present and correct on this newest iteration of Flight Attendant. - RockShoxAs do minimum component requirements, namely a fork, shock and pedalling sensor. Add an AXS rear derailleur, left-hand pod controller and a power meter to open up even more performance. All Charger-3 equipped forks (Pike, Lyrik and ZEB) can be upgraded to run a Flight Attendant damper, but an accompanying Flight Attendant rear shock must also be fitted.A fork, shock and pedalling sensor are the minimum required components for Flight Attendant to work. - RockShoxShock-wise, youve got a choice between the new Vivids and the Super Deluxe Ultimate. However the latest tech may remain the subject of your fantasies, given RockShox only officially supports Flight Attendant on a handful of bikes:2021-2022 Canyon Neuron 292019-2022 Canyon Spectral2023+ Canyon Spectral:ON2019+ Santa Cruz Hightower2023+ Santa Cruz Megatower2020+ Specialzied Enduro2022+ Specialzied Levo SL S2-S62021+ Specialzied Stumpjumper Evo S2-S62023+ Trek Fuel EX2021-2022 Trek Slash2023+ Trek Slash Gen 62020+ Yeti SB1402022 YT Capra 292021-2022 YT Jeffsy 29While fitment to other bikes is possible, RockShox says its not recommended because of shock clearance issues, shock tune incompatibilities and limited Flight Attendant shock lengths.Flight Attendant is only officially compatible with certain bikes. - RockShoxTo check whether your bike is compatible with Flight Attendant, check RockShoxs website here.Entirely new to the Flight Attendant range is the gravity-focused Vivid shock, both in its coil and air-sprung variants. In simple terms, this takes the Vivid and bolts the Flight Attendant module to its piggyback reservoir. However, aftermarket upgrades arent possible, so if youve just purchased a Vivid Ultimate coil or air, youre out of luck if you want to bolt Flight Attendant on.The Vivid is new to the Flight Attendant family. - RockShoxNeither Vivid shock is available aftermarket, either. This suggests more brands that havent been announced yet are intending to fit Flight Attendant to their gravity-focused enduro bikes and downhill bikes. Once that list is announced, we suspect the Vivids will become available aftermarket.Weve also spotted Flight Attendant fitted to RockShoxs Boxxer fork at World Cup downhill races. Its public release is possible too.RockShox Flight Attendant pricesIf youre lucky enough to have a compatible bike, upgrading to Flight Attendant is going to set you back a fair chunk of cash.RockShox Flight Attendant Charger 3.1 DamperCompatible with Pike C1+, Lyrik D1+, ZEB A1+/$/ no pricing givenRockShox ZEB Ultimate Flight AttendantRockShox ZEB Ultimate Flight Attendant. - RockShox170mm travel, 29in wheel1,609 / $1,599 / 1,799RockShox Lyrik Ultimate Flight AttendantRockShox Lyrik Ultimate Flight Attendant. - RockShox160mm travel, 29in wheel1,569 / $1,549 / 1,749RockShox Pike Ultimate Flight AttendantRockShox Pike Ultimate Flight Attendant. - RockShox140mm travel, 29in wheel1,519 / $1,499 / 1,699RockShox Super Deluxe Ultimate Flight AttendantRockShox Super Deluxe Ultimate Flight Attendant. - RockShoxEye-to-eye and stroke lengths not specified939 / $949 / 1,049RockShox Vivid and Vivid Coil Ultimate Flight AttendantThe Vivid is new to the Flight Attendant family. - RockShoxEye-to-eye and stroke lengths not specified/$/ not available aftermarket

Pinarello changes the Dogma Fs recipe to get lighter and a touch faster
CyclistPinarello changes the Dogma Fs recipe to get lighter and a touch fasterThe new Pinarello Dogma F has been raced by Ineos Grenadiers for the past couple of months and Pinarello has now given its latest race bike an official introduction. Thanks to a new type of carbon fibre included in the framesets construction, Pinarello says the Dogma F drops 108g in weight despite achieving a CdA (the figure that measures aerodynamic drag) that is said to be 0.2% lower than the outgoing models. The claimed aero gain has been obtained by extending the surface area of frame junctions at the head tube and bottom bracket, as well as making the front of the bike narrower. A new, elliptical steerer has allowed cables to be routed in front of it and correspondingly narrower bearings used, reducing the bikes frontal profile. The new Dogma F is the first to be disc brake only, although the old rim brake model will continue to be offered for now. Prices for full builds start from 12,600 / 14,500 / $14,500 while the disc frameset will cost 5,500 / 6,700 / $6,950. Pinarello Dogma X review: First ride on Pinarellos new top-tier endurance bike Pinarellos classic bikes: Gallery Best road bikes: Best bikes from under 1,000 to over 10,000 Rapid developmentSam ChallisThe typical life cycle of a high-end bike these days tends to be around 3-4 years, but the Pinarello Dogma F gets revised at a significantly faster rate. That means there have been plenty of updates in the platforms 22-year history. We were a formation partner of the Ineos Grenadiers then Team Sky and the team needs a new bike every two years, says Fausto Pinarello, Pinarellos CEO. Our starting point for new projects is always asking, What does the team need?, which is so valuable. For example, theyve always said they dont want to change bikes mid-race, and we knew we could build a well-rounded race machine, so we shunned the trend for separate race categories. Now other brands are recombining their lightweight and aero bikes, coming back to where weve been all along. The 2022 Tour de France was another example of Pinarellos use of pro-derived data mining. We measured Geraint Thomas performance data at the race, trying to assess his energy expenditure against the four main contributors to speed: weight, aerodynamics, rolling resistance and comfort, says Massimo Poloniato, Pinarellos road bike R&D manager. Then we weigh that data against where we could make gains in the Dogmas design.Unsurprisingly given how well understood its effects are these days, aero efficiency proved the biggest area that Pinarello could improve in the Dogma F.We found that over the course of a Grand Tour, just a 0.2% improvement in the bikes coefficient of drag [the measure of how aerodynamic something is] equates to saving 175g in weight, says Poloniato. That weight would normally be incredibly hard to find, but a better CdA was achievable.Sam ChallisThat said, Pinarello says the new Dogma F drops 108g versus its predecessor as well getting faster, thanks to the inclusion of a different type of carbon fibre, Torays Torayca M40X. This is used in the Dogma Fs layup in place of the T1100G fibres that were introduced in the F8 and used up until now. M40X was developed by Toray in 2018 and has been used in Pinarellos Dogma X-Light models (lightweight, exclusive versions of previous Dogmas generally only used by pros) for several years, but it has taken considerable development for the brand to exploit its advantages while keeping framesets robust. Reportedly, X-Light framesets were fragile in certain areas and werent really suitable for normal-weight riders.M40X has a far higher tensile modulus than anything weve used before, says Poloniato. In laymans terms that means its stiffer, so less material is required for the same stiffness, dropping weight. Pinarello says that a fully built size 53cm Dogma F weighs 6.63kg.Dragging down dragSam ChallisThe Dogma Fs distinctive design language is stronger than ever in the latest F indeed, Pinarello himself often declares with no little amount of passione that his bikes will always be beautiful machines but the bikes tube junctions are visibly altered this time around, with more pronounced webbing making areas like the bottom bracket and head tube junctions much larger.Filippos [Ganna, Ineos Grenadiers time-trial specialist and current Hour record holder] Hour record-winning Bolide informed the new Dogma profiles. The down tube has been made steeper by 3.5, bringing the front edge of the bottom bracket junction forward and the rear of the head tube backward, says Poloniato. The larger bottom bracket also recaptures any stiffness lost by having to make the chainstays slimmer, in order to bump tyre clearance up to 32mm.Sam ChallisClaims of the keel-like shape of the BB smoothing airflow are echoed to a greater degree at the head tube, but the bikes main aero benefit comes from slimming the front of the bike down laterally. The head tube has been narrowed by 8mm courtesy of some reimagined cable routing, which was allowed by making the fork steerer elliptical. The new steerer cross section which is oval left-to-right when viewed from above, creates space for the cables directly in front of the steerer rather than to the sides of it. This meant smaller bearings could be used, and the corresponding tubes and components that make up that area of the bike could all be narrower too.Details matterSam ChallisThe slimmer thinking was carried through to the skinnier Onda fork (which also has a longer rake to create less trail and quicker handling) and new Talon Ultra Fast cockpit, which is made by Most, Pinarellos in-house component brand. Its 40g lighter than previous, now slightly flared and comes in widths down to 40cm (measured outside to outside, which is actually 38cm centre-to-centre). Crucially, it angles the hoods inwards such that the riders hands can be just 34cm apart. An aero body position is such an important part of going fast, so the new bars help achieve this in a comfortable and safe manner, says Poloniato.Sam ChallisAt the same time as helping optimise the bulk of the total system drag, Pinarello hasnt overlooked even the tiniest supporting details. The thru-axle threads are now captive and smoothed over on the fork and rear dropout, and the seat post clamp is smaller, lighter and now fully integrated into the back of the seat tube, for a clean look. The Ineos Grenadiers will know better than most, its the details that matter and in the latest Dogma F Pinarello doesnt seem to have left any stone unturned.Pinarello Dogma F specs and pricesSam ChallisThe new Dogma F will be available in seven specs: therell be Shimano Dura-Ace Di2+PM (ie, with power meter), Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 and SRAM Red AXS builds, each with a choice of DT Swiss ARC 1400 wheels or Princeton CarbonWorks Peak 4550 wheels. Then theres the all-Italian Campagnolo Super Record WRL build with Campagnolo Bora WTO wheels. All builds are available in six colour options and 11 sizes. The new Dogma F is disc-brake only, but Pinarello will continue to offer the old frameset in a rim-brake option for now.Prices for the full builds start from 12,600 / 14,500 / $14,500 and the frameset will cost 5,500 / 6,700 / $6,950.For more information on the new Pinarello Dogma F visit pinarello.com Related Posts Pinarello focus: Wilmslow Aero vs lightweight vs all-rounder: which is the fastest road bike? Pinarello announces lighter, more aero, disc-brake only Dogma F
Pinarello has announced its latest flagship Dogma F all-round race bike, with key updates to the tube profiles to increase aerodynamic performance while shaving weight. The new Dogma F also switches to a new carbon construction, has room for 30mm tyres and sports a fresh MOST Talon Ultra Fast integrated handlebar.Akin to the outgoing Dogma F versus the Dogma F12, the new Dogma F represents a series of marginal improvements over its predecessor, rather than a step-change.The bike has been two years in development and is said to be built specifically for the Ineos Grenadiers riders so they can have a faster, better performing bike for key Grand Tour races. The outgoing Dogma F was one of the last road bikes you could still buy with rim brakes, but Pinarello has made the decision to make the new Dogma F disc-only. However, Pinarello says it's going to be continuing production of the previous rim-brake frame for those who want it.Complete bikes start at 12,600 / $14,500 / 14,500, or a frameset can be purchased for 5,500 / $6,950 / 6,700. Australian pricing and availability are to be confirmed.Want to know our initial impressions of the new Pinarello Dogma F? Head to our first ride review.A new carbon fibre constructionA new carbon construction was in order. - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaFlagship Pinarello bikes have relied on a Torayca T1100 1K carbon construction for many years. However, the new Dogma F uses a new Toray M40X carbon fibre, which Pinarello claims has a 53gpa (Gigapascals) tensile-strength advantage, enabling it to reach the next level of lateral stiffness performance. The brand says it has been testing the carbon on its X-Light models and on Ineos Grenadiers team bikes for some time. The new unpainted frameset. - PinarelloCarbon frames consist of a blend of fibres, with a higher-modulus construction typically found at high-stress areas for added stiffness.Pinarello says the new M40X carbon fibre is predominantly found at the revised bottom bracket junction (but more on that later). You may remember the X-Light bikes carried a low 85kg rider weight limit, but the new Dogma F is rated to 120kg.30mm tyre clearanceThere's just a smidge of clearance left with these 28mm Continental GP5000 S TRs. - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaThe new Dogma F has room for 30mm road bike tyres (width as measured), up from the 28mm rating of its predecessor.Thats quite conservative compared to its competitors, though, with the Specialized Tarmac SL8 rated to clear 32mm rubber, while the Cervlo S5 has room for 34mm tyres. When asked if Pinarello considered opting for a more generous clearance, the brand said it would have come at the expense of the frames stiffness.Aero trumps weightIt's a Pinarello through-and-through. - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaUnlike most of its competitors who (over time) have developed dedicated climbing bikes or aero road bikes, Pinarello has always stuck with a one-bike philosophy for racing. The new Dogma F continues this ethos, along with the trademark asymmetric tube profiles the brand is known for. The Italian threaded bottom bracket standard remains, too. That said, Pinarello says it studied Ineos Grenadiers rider Geraint Thomas performance data at the 2022 Tour de France, noting his average energy expenditure and balancing that with the potential savings he could make in different riding situations. As a result of this study, Pinarello claims it discovered minor improvements in CdA (coefficient of aerodynamic drag) were more valuable than saving weight. The new Dogma Fs CdA has been reduced by a claimed 0.2 per cent (a weighted average figure taken from data across different yaw angles), following many small revisions to the tubes shapes and profiles. Pinarello hasnt specified the exact yaw angles tested. The brand also claims a 108g weight saving for the frameset (in this case, frame, fork, seatpost and integrated handlebar). And what about compliance? Pinarello suggests this is globally similar to the outgoing model. The brand says the chainstays on the new model are stiffer, though, and this is counteracted by the fork, which has become more compliant.Marginal gainsThe signature channel for the bottle cage remains in the down tube. - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaPinarello has completely redesigned the down tube to improve the frames frontal aerodynamic performance, which sees a reduction in thickness over the outgoing Dogma F.The down tube leads to what Pinarello calls a new Aero-Keel bottom bracket a girthy junction not dissimilar in appearance to the Mariana bottom bracket design found on the BMC Teammachine R.That's one massive bottom bracket. - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaLike the Teammachine R, the increase in surface area is claimed to smooth airflow and improve stiffness. The bottom bracket is said to take its name from how the down tube profile has been rotated by 3.5 degrees where it meets the junction. The new aero head tube and down tube junction. - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaThe head tube has also been redesigned, with Pinarello reducing the width of the nose area by 8mm, again to improve its aero performance. The new Dogma F also sees the thru-axle inserts in-moulded into both dropouts, with the inserts invisible from the outside faces.Nice and clean - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaThis not only improves aerodynamics but enables the brand to use shorter thru-axles, thus reducing weight. BMC has used a visually similar design with its Stealth Dropouts, found on models such as the Roadmachine and Teammachine SLR01.The new Dogma Fs fork legs are also slimmer, while retaining Pinarellos signature Onda wave design. It's a similar seatpost arrangement, with some weight savings. - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaThe Dogma F continues to use a twin T20 Torx bolt seatpost clamp at the back of the seat tube. However, rather than having a separate wedge that sits behind the seatpost, the clamp is now integrated into the seat tube, resulting in a much cleaner aesthetic. Pinarello also claims this new design limits the amount of sweat and dust that can get inside. While the proprietary seatpost features the same dimensions as the previous Dogma F and current Dogma X, the posts head has also seen some weight savings. An updated front endThe new front end meant a change in headset standard. - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaAs a result of the head tubes new shape, Pinarello had to rethink the headset and, by extension, the steerer tube. The new bike uses a 1.5in upper headset bearing and a 1 lower. The fork steerer tube now sees an elliptical shape and theres a new cover to channel the hydraulic hoses through the headset. On the outgoing Dogma F, the hoses would pass either side of the steerer, but the new cover routes them in front, which Pinarello claims offers a more direct path.Because theres room for only two hoses, that means the new Dogma F is only compatible with electronic groupsets.A new integrated handlebarThe new bar. - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaThe new headset standard and steerer tube shape mean the existing MOST Talon Ultra bar is incompatible, so Pinarello has developed a new MOST Talon Ultra Fast model. The new bar is lighter, with its overall weight reduced by 40g in an unspecified size. Its also claimed to be more aerodynamic and adopts a wider 7-degree flare on the drops.Pinarello has also canted the top of the bar inward, so riders can find an aero position in a safer way. There's now a 7-degree flare. - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaLike its predecessor, the new bar is offered in 16 sizes, from 80 to 140mm stem lengths (in 10mm increments) and 400 to 460mm widths (in 20mm increments). Its worth noting that Pinarello measures its handlebars from the outside edges of the tops, rather than the typical centre-to-centre measurement. This means a nominal 420mm-wide handlebar, for example, will measure 400mm centre-to-centre.Doing the mathsThe weight savings all add up. - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaPinarello claims the new Dogma Fs frame weight is 860g unpainted in a size 53cm with the steerer uncut. The outgoing Dogma F had a claimed frame weight of 865g with the same parameters. So where exactly has the 108g claimed weight saving come from?Speaking to BikeRadar, Pinarellos R&D mechanical engineer Massimo Poloniato explained the most significant weight savings are found with the 40g-lighter handlebar. He also says a few grams have been knocked off the fork legs to counteract the new heavier steerer tube. The slimmer head tube and headset also shave weight, as do the integrated seat clamp, thru-axle design and a revised seatpost head with titanium hardware.Pinarello Dogma F geometryThe most significant change is the increased fork rake. - Oscar Huckle / Our MediaPinarello has mostly preserved the geometry of the existing Dogma F, but the key change is the new 47mm fork rake (up from 43mm), to increase the bikes stability on descents.Depending on the size, some of the head tube lengths also differ compared to the outgoing model, but the stack remains the same this comes as a result of the increased tyre clearance. The Dogma F continues to be offered in 11 sizes, with the MOST Talon Ultra Fast bar coming in 16 permutations.Pinarello says it's up to the dealer if they are willing to change the stock cockpit at the point of purchase.
