'I got super scared': Riders criticise rough roads at Worlds time trial
Marlen Reusser (Switzerland) and Remco Evenepoel (Belgium) delivered the expected victories, but the road to the rainbow jerseys received mixed reviews. Rough surfaces, potholes, tight corners and the difficulty of carrying speed became recurring themes in riders reactions to a course that tested more than pure power.Brandon Rivera (Colombia) crossed the line with a badly rubbing front wheel, torn clothing and bloodied skin. Ethan Hayter (Great Britain) hit a barrier and was nursing a sore hand as he spoke to journalists. Jakob Sderqvist (Sweden) saw his podium challenge disrupted by a slide-out in the closing technical section. The roads are pretty low quality and having half the road is really hard to judge with the cones, said Hayter, who finished 18th. You dont quite carry the speed the same as a normal road.Silver medallist Filippo Ganna (Italy) also criticised the surface during his press conference, saying he had expected better and that "everyone would have benefitted from a better road."For American Brandon McNulty, familiarity with the roads did little to soften the demands of the closing kilometres. The former Grand Prix Cycliste de Montral winner briefly occupied the second-place hot seat before finishing fourth, 12 seconds off a medal."You hit those corners with a lot of fatigue in your legs. It never feels good," he said. The finish was familiar from his previous appearances in Montral, but that offered little comfort."I think that was one of the worst times Ive done it," he said. The mens crashes followed concerns from riders in the womens race who tackled their longest time trial in the events history. For Spains Paula Blasi, distance was not the issue. She felt she had the form to produce a strong ride, but struggled to find confidence. Blasi, one of the seasons breakout stars on the road, had crashed during reconnaissance of the Spanish National Championships time trial course in June. The memory of that crash made the bumps and holes harder to negotiate."Already when we were doing the recon, I think the road is not as good as we were expecting," she said. "It didnt help at all to have these holes on the road."The flatter stretches and smooth roads of the Formula One circuit offered some respite. The technical opening, however, left her giving away time despite feeling strong."The road was super bumpy, and mentally I got super scared, so every corner I was losing two, three seconds," said Blasi, who finished 18th. "You cannot compete with that."

    Ryan Mullen finished 36th in the mens elite time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Montral on Sunday 20 September, as Remco Evenepoel retained his world title with a dominant ride.Evenepoel (Belgium) covered the 39.2km from Avenue du Parc in 44:53.13 at an average of 52.40km/h, and was fastest through every one of the four sectors. Filippo Ganna took silver at 57.31 seconds and Paul Seixas bronze at 1:13.04, with Brandon McNulty fourth and Jakob Sderqvist fifth.Mullen (bib 28) came home in 48:41.40 at 48.31km/h, 3:48.27 down. He was 31st at the first check, 34th at the second and 36th at the third, holding that position to the line. It is a solid ride in a specialists field on a course that rewarded raw power.Evenepoels margin of 57 seconds over Ganna is the story of the day. He led by 22 seconds at 10.7km, 40 at 21.9km and 48 at 29.8km, extending through every sector rather than fading.Its simply incredible. My goal was to come here and win, to take this fourth title that was my motivation, Evenepoel said. It was a challenging course, with a technical start and finish and a power section in the middle. After six kilometres we had taken our own time check, and when I saw that I was in front I was able to relax a little.Now I have some time to recover, and then Ill focus on next Sunday. He rides the elite road race on the closing day of the championships.By the NumbersIt is Evenepoels fourth consecutive world time trial title, after 2023, 2024 and 2025, and it takes him level with Tony Martin and Fabian Cancellara at the top of the all-time list for the event. Both won four, but neither took them in four straight years Martin won in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2016, Cancellara in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010.He now has six medals in the elite time trial in all, with one silver and two bronzes alongside the four golds. Across all mens categories his tally reaches eight, including under-23 gold in 2025 and junior medals in 2021 and 2022.Belgium move to four golds in the discipline since 1994, behind Germany on seven and Switzerland on five. Gannas silver is his fifth elite medal, and Paul Seixas bronze is only Frances second medal in the event.Irish RiderIRLIrish Rider Mens Elite Time TrialSun 20 September 2026 Montral 39.2km36Ryan MULLEN (28)IRL 48.306 km/h+3:48.27ResultITTResult Mens Elite Time TrialSun 20 September 2026 Montral 39.2km 58 finishers1Remco EVENEPOEL (1)BEL 52.400 km/h 44:53.132Filippo GANNA (2)ITA 51.308 km/h +57.313Paul SEIXAS (16)FRA 51.016 km/h +1:13.044Brandon McNULTY (13)USA 50.792 km/h+1:25.275Jakob SODERQVIST (9)SWE 50.775 km/h+1:26.186Isaac DEL TORO (6)MEX 50.548 km/h+1:38.837Stefan KUNG (5)SUI 50.444 km/h+1:44.448Kasper ASGREEN (30)DEN 50.370 km/h+1:48.549Daan HOOLE (7)NED 50.125 km/h+2:02.2110Callum THORNLEY (15)GBR 50.115 km/h+2:02.7911Alec SEGAERT (12)BEL 50.098 km/h+2:03.7712Mikkel Norsgaard BJERG (17)DEN 50.056 km/h+2:06.1013Michael LEONARD (27)CAN 49.993 km/h+2:09.6514Jasha SUTTERLIN (37)GER 49.971 km/h+2:10.8815Ivan ROMEO (11)ESP 49.932 km/h+2:13.1316Mattia CATTANEO (21)ITA 49.909 km/h+2:14.3917Jan TRATNIK (31)SLO 49.883 km/h+2:15.8718Ethan HAYTER (3)GBR 49.832 km/h+2:18.7919Artem SHMIDT (24)USA 49.803 km/h+2:20.4420Nelson OLIVEIRA (34)POR 49.754 km/h+2:23.2421Ivo OLIVEIRA (10)POR 49.660 km/h+2:28.6122Tobias FOSS (19)NOR 49.650 km/h+2:29.1823Michal KWIATKOWSKI (32)POL 49.570 km/h+2:33.7824Pablo CASTRILLO (25)ESP 49.434 km/h+2:41.6125Byron MUNTON (50)RSA 49.387 km/h+2:44.3126Bruno ARMIRAIL (4)FRA 49.373 km/h+2:45.1427Max WALSCHEID (26)GER 49.331 km/h+2:47.5228Stefan BISSEGGER (20)SUI 49.215 km/h+2:54.2729Mathias VACEK (14)CZE 49.118 km/h+2:59.9830Arthur KLUCKERS (36)LUX 48.921 km/h+3:11.5231Nickolas ZUKOWSKY (48)CAN 48.792 km/h+3:19.1632Andreas LEKNESSUND (8)NOR 48.733 km/h+3:22.6233Conor LEAHY (22)AUS 48.718 km/h+3:23.5434Rune HERREGODTS (33)BEL 48.632 km/h+3:28.6835Ognjen ILI (41)SRB 48.428 km/h+3:40.5236Ryan MULLEN (28)IRL 48.306 km/h+3:48.2737Walter VARGAS (18)COL 48.300 km/h+3:48.6138Janos PELIKAN (35)HUN 47.747 km/h+4:22.4439Henrique AVANCINI (42)BRA 47.641 km/h+4:29.0540Kaden HOPKINS (38)BER 47.346 km/h+4:47.5141Barnabas PEAK (46)HUN 46.870 km/h+5:17.7742Anton KUZMIN (44)KAZ 46.664 km/h+5:31.0743Jo HASHIKAWA (40)JPN 46.437 km/h+5:45.8144Amir ANSARI (49)REF 46.392 km/h+5:48.7745Brandon RIVERA (29)COL 46.320 km/h+5:53.5246Nicholas NARRAWAY (53)BER 45.964 km/h+6:17.0847Cory LEWIS (39)BIZ 45.831 km/h+6:25.9848Maral-Erdene BATMUNKH (55)MGL 45.222 km/h+7:07.4749Alexandre MAYER (23)MRI 45.169 km/h+7:11.1550Houwang CAO (47)CHN 44.941 km/h+7:27.0151Chenglu LIU (58)CHN 44.870 km/h+7:31.9752Daniil MARUKHIN (56)KAZ 44.847 km/h+7:33.6053Derrick CHAVARRIA (54)BIZ 44.273 km/h+8:14.3654Fredd MATUTE (51)HON 43.920 km/h+8:39.9655Majid ABU HARRAH (45)JOR 43.678 km/h+8:57.8156Ahmad Badreddin WAIS (59)REF 43.290 km/h+9:26.7357Daniel YON HIN (52)MRI 42.592 km/h+10:20.1558Chris BODDEN (43)CAY 39.586 km/h+14:31.73Sector AnalysisSECSector Times Top 10Four sectors: 10.7km, 11.2km, 7.9km and 9.4km sector rank in brackets1Remco EVENEPOEL (1)S1 12:17.63 (1) S2 12:32.81 (1) S3 8:59.43 (1) S4 11:03.26 (1) 44:53.132Filippo GANNA (2)S1 12:40.41 (10) S2 12:50.58 (2) S3 9:06.99 (2) S4 11:12.46 (2) 45:50.443Paul SEIXAS (16)S1 12:35.88 (4) S2 12:54.52 (3) S3 9:12.84 (4) S4 11:22.93 (3) 46:06.174Brandon McNULTY (13)S1 12:38.61 (6) S2 12:59.33 (6) S3 9:17.18 (6) S4 11:23.28 (4)46:18.405Jakob SODERQVIST (9)S1 12:27.03 (2) S2 12:58.16 (5) S3 9:12.80 (3) S4 11:41.32 (15)46:19.316Isaac DEL TORO (6)S1 12:39.87 (8) S2 13:03.95 (7) S3 9:16.43 (5) S4 11:31.71 (5)46:31.967Stefan KUNG (5)S1 12:39.79 (7) S2 13:06.76 (8) S3 9:18.39 (7) S4 11:32.63 (8)46:37.578Kasper ASGREEN (30)S1 12:37.62 (5) S2 12:56.02 (4) S3 9:23.15 (14) S4 11:44.88 (18)46:41.679Daan HOOLE (7)S1 12:54.15 (25) S2 13:07.95 (9) S3 9:18.91 (8) S4 11:34.33 (9)46:55.3410Callum THORNLEY (15)S1 12:47.89 (16) S2 13:14.12 (19) S3 9:19.11 (9) S4 11:34.80 (10)46:55.92PhotosPhotography by B Sutton IrishCyclingNews.comThe post Results : Men Elite Individual Time Trial World Championships 2026 appeared first on IrishCyclingNews.com | Irish Cycling News | IrishCycling.

Brandon McNulty misses Worlds medal by 12 seconds, turns to road race with best team US has had
The first test of the 2026 UCI Road World Championships left Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates XRG) just 12 seconds short of a medal, and gave fellow American Artem Schmidt (Netcompany INEOS) encouragement ahead of the road race. For both, the time trial offered reasons for optimism, even if Sunday's challenge will demand far more than a strong, sustained effort.McNulty finished fourth as Belgian's Remco Evenepoel claimed his fourth consecutive time trial title, briefly occupying the second-place hot seat before the final contenders pushed him out of the medals. The margin was narrow, and his immediate reaction was satisfaction with a ride that confirmed his condition."12 seconds from the medal is not bad," McNulty said. "Im happy with the ride."I think it showed the work was paying off and, yeah, hopefully I can keep getting better."For 22-year-old Schmidt, the challenge lay in deciding where to push and where to hold something back. Speaking to Cycling Weekly before he knew his finishing position, 18th, he was pleased with how he had managed the effort."I think I left mostly everything out there," he said. "It's super easy to lose momentum with the potholes, and trying to gain that momentum back is super tough."The next task is turning those individual efforts into a collective performance in the road race. McNulty believes the Americans have the strength to make an impact, describing the squad as "the best team I think the U.S. have had."In 2025, McNulty crossed the line first here to win the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montral. Compatriot Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) finished third that day. On their returns to the same race earlier this month, McNulty and Simmons placed third and fourth, respectively. Something, McNulty said, he can take confidence from. "I think there's a chance. If we do everything perfect, to have a good shot at a medal," he said. But he is very realistic about the opposition, naming the likes of Evenepoel and Mathieu van der Poel (Netherlands) among the fiercest competition."We have our work cut out, but I think we have a good team to race aggressively," he said."There are a ton of strong guys that I dont think weve ever really beaten before, so its going to be hard," he said. "But I think we have numbers to at least play our cards well."Schmidt expects to contribute in support."The road race is a different type of beast than the time trial," Schmidt said."But I have a good threshold and good one-hour power to help the guys as much as I can."For McNulty, fourth place provides a timely indication of form before returning to roads where he has already won. "I love the circuit, so Im excited," he said. "But itll be a hard day."
