Thank goodness for TPU inner tubes, yet again saving me from a ride-ending tyre slash
There is no way I would've made it home if I had relied on just a butyl tube or tubeless repair kit on Sunday. I'm not afraid to call for a lift, but my wife and son were out, so I had no choice. I had to make it work or start walking. The best TPU inner tubes have a number of benefits, but specifically, in this case, the plastic construction means they hold shape really well. A butyl tube would have bulged out of the large slit in my tyre, and the best tubeless repair kit wouldn't have helped this time. Even the old toothpaste tube and glue I carry with me didn't help, as there was too much sealant to deal with.I still had to cut my ride short, but I at least managed to ride the 15km home under my own steam, all thanks to my TPU inner tube. This is a tube I have carried around for years and only ever call on in an emergency. I'm an avid tubeless user, and my recent experiences haven't put me off, even though two tyres failed the same way on nearby trails. TPU inner tubes offer more than a lightweight option to carry in your pocket. If you're still averse to tubeless, TPU can offer some of the same benefits without the mess. The right combination of tyre and tube can significantly reduce rolling resistance, increase puncture resistance, and, as I mentioned, make changing tyres or fixing punctures mess-free. Oakley updates a classic for unobstructed vision
Oakley has added a new shape to its long-running Radar sunglasses range. The Radar EV Heater sunglasses increase the lens height and extend it to the sides, which Oakley says delivers unobstructed vision for cyclists. They join the Radar EV Advancer glasses, which have a vented lens, and the Radar EV Pitch glasses, which offer wider side coverage. The usual Oakley materials have been used: the O-Matter plastic frame, two sets of Unobtainium nosepads and non-slip earsocks, which Oakley claims grip better the more you sweat to help keep the glasses in place. The Heater lens is both taller and wider than other Radar EV models. Oakley uses its Prizm high-definition lens in the new eyewear, which comes in up to nine lens/frame colour options, depending on geography, including two polarised lenses. Oakley rates the size as XL. Prices start at 196 / $244 / 222.We have Oakley Radar reviews at BikeRadar going right back to 2007, when we described the then-new sunnies as a fantastic design, very well made, and the new lenses are excellent. We grumbled about their price even then, though.Plus new Cybr Lightning We reckon the vented, rimless design will work well for cyclists. Oakleys second new model is the rimless Cybr Lightning, which joins its existing Cybr families. Theres the same mix of plastics as in the Radar EV Heater sunnies. The lens is vented for additional airflow and is treated with Oakleys Iridium surface coating.Oakley says the Cybr Lightning glasses are designed for running, but they would be an equally good choice for cyclists, with the lack of an upper frame ensuring forward vision when nose to the bar. The size is rated as L.There are up to five lens/side-arm colour choices, again depending on where you live, including a salmon pink low-light option. Prices start at 164 / $204 / 185.

'Solid day out' - Paige Onweller and Cobe Freeburn win 2026 USA Cycling Gravel National Championships
Trek Driftless had plenty to celebrate in Minnesota over the weekend, with Cobe Freeburn and Paige Onweller sweeping the elite titles at the 2026 USA Cycling Gravel National Championships. After 107 miles of racing, Freeburn clinched his Stars and Stripes jersey with a late solo attack, while Onweller won hers in a two-rider sprint. For Freeburn, the victory came with another milestone: his first trip onto a national championship podium."The day was great. It was very chaotic with people up the road all the time," Freeburn said. "Luckily, we caught Griffin [Easter] right at the end, and I was able to attack in the forest and get away."The mens field of 61 offered little opportunity to settle in. Attacks steadily reduced the bunch, and by mile 53, five riders had gone clear: Zach Calton, Marc Spratt, Braeden Sellinger, Chase Wark and Robert Oehler. That move was back by the three-hour mark, leaving 12 riders at the front and Griffin Easter (OpiCure Gravel p/b Orbea and Castelli SOG) chasing half a minute behind. Easter worked his way across, then kept going. With 10 miles remaining, he was alone out front, 40 seconds ahead of a nine-rider chase. It was a promising position, but in the effort of bridging and then attacking, Easter had perhaps burned one match too many. The chasers reeled him in during the closing miles, opening the door for Freeburn to launch his race-winning move. The Durango rider quickly built a 20-second advantage and held clear to the finish. Cole Davis (SpeedStudio p/b Basso) won the sprint for second, while Easter salvaged third after helping shape the race.Ive been thinking about this since last year and I really wanted it, so Im really proud, Freeburn said.Freeburns path to gravel began on mountain bikes, including four years with the Bear National Team development programme. He joined Trek Driftless for 2026 after a privateer season that brought victory at Bighorn Gravel and a third-place finish at SBT GRVL. Completing his college degree before the 2025 season also gave Freeburn more time for training and recovery, helping set up his breakthrough year as a Life Time Grand Prix debutant. Men's PodiumCobe Freeburn (Durango, Colo.; Trek Driftless)Cole Davis (Roseville, Calif.; SpeedStudio p/b Basso)Griffin Easter (Park City, Utah; OpiCure Gravel p/b Orbea and Castelli SOG)(Image credit: Life Time )In the womens race, Onweller wasted little time to test the 25-rider elite field. After a hard opening sequence of climbs, she attacked around mile 38, using a long plateau and crosswind to force a separation.By mile 41, she had 20 seconds on the chase, with two groups of eight behind her. After an hour off the front by herself, Onweller was joined by Sarah Lange (Velocio // Exploro)and the two worked well together. At mile 66, the pair led solo chaser Emma Langley (Ventum / DT Swiss / Kenda / Rule28 / Monolith) by 40 seconds, with another five riders 2:40 behind. Onweller and Lange continued to cooperate, keeping the title contest between themselves."We work really well together, were both super strong, and really committed to working together to the finish," Onweller said.Their partnership lasted until the final sprint, where Onweller took the win ahead of Lange. Langley completed the podium."I got her at the end, but she really pushed me today, and it was a really fun day with her," Onweller added. "Solid day out today at Gravel Nationals."Onwellers cycling story started comparatively recently. A former collegiate runner and emergency-room physician assistant, she began riding in 2020 to complement her running, then found competition on Zwift. Her first mass-start bike race was (the unofficial) Gravel Worlds in 2021, where she finished fifth; just over a year later, she won Big Sugar. She's now a familiar face at the front end of any pro gravel race. Women's PodiumPaige Onweller (Bella Vista, Ark.; Trek Driftless)Sarah Lange (Lyme, N.H.)Emma Langley (Richmond, Va.; Ventum / DT Swiss / Kenda / Rule28 / Monolith)
