- IRISHCYCLE.COMMinisters plan for congestion is projects built or already announced, says opposition spokespersonCongestion Action Plan was reported as to be published in the coming weeks, but its still not released.Minister for Transport Darragh OBriens congestion plans include park-and-ride and bus routes already planned and, in some cases, projects already built, with no standout new ideas, an opposition spokesperson claimed. When contacted, the Department of Transport last week did not clearly refute the claims and mostly confirmed them. The Irish Times in June quoted an unnamed source who outlined that Minister OBrien was determined to tackle congestion to ensure workers and families can commute efficiently, that businesses can operate to their full potential, and to support tourism growth. But months later, the Congestion Action Plan has still not been published. Cllr Feljin Jose, the Green Partys spokesperson on transport, said: Last year, Minister for Transport, Darragh OBrien, said he was going to come up with a plan to tackle congestion in Dublin. It hasnt been published yet, but were going to go through whats in The Irish Times article and see if its any good.So the first thing thats in it is a bus lane on the hard shoulder on the M4 motorway. That was actually built well over a year ago, but the legislation needed to operate it wasnt signed by the Minister. So thats why its not open, he said.Cllr Jose said: The next thing is the extension of the Dart service to Drogheda. Irish Rail has been working on this for about three or four years now, so not exactly Darragh OBriens plan, but thats supposed to start next year and was already happening anyway. He said that the next thing is increased enforcement of bus lane rules by Gardai. But last year, a camera enforcement trial planned in Dublin was cancelled, and he claims the plan to roll out camera enforcement across Ireland has been delayed again and again, and we have no timeline for the installation of that. The next thing is the opening of a park-and-ride facility in Fassaroe in Bray. This is already built, but its not open yet because theres nothing there to ride on and theres no funding provided for the buses that were supposed to serve that. So again, Darragh OBrien, thats on you, said Cllr Jose.Listed as a medium-term measure is the new park-and-ride facility in Lissenhall in Swords. But Cllr Jose said that thats actually just Metrolink. Thats just part of the Metrolink project. Its been in the works for about eight years. It has planning permission, and itll start construction next year. Not exactly a new idea.He added: Most of what we know so far about this new plan for traffic congestion is just what we have at the moment theres nothing radical in it, and even measures like camera enforcement thats been delayed; theres no progress on that, and theres no funding for additional public transport services to get people out of cars. And theyre also delaying projects like Dart+ Southwest and Luas Finglas, which would serve tens of thousands of people and get people out of cars and into trains. When contacted, the Department of Transport did not seem to directly contradict anything the Green Party spokesperson claimed.A Department of Transport spokesperson said: In March 2026, Minister OBrien convened a high-level roundtable meeting with transport agencies and operators, local authorities and An Garda Siochna to examine potential solutions to address congestion in the Greater Dublin Area (GDA). The measures and recommendations arising from this collaboration with stakeholders feed into the Congestion Action Plan for the Greater Dublin Area, which is currently under development. The plan aims to alleviate short- and medium-term pressures on the transport system, including on the M50, through collaboration with transport agencies, operators and local authorities, to deliver impactful measures to reduce congestion. While the initial focus of the Congestion Plan is on the GDA, the intention is that many of the measures can be replicated if successful across other metropolitan areas nationally, the spokesperson said. The Department said that the Congestion Action Plan builds on the Transport Sectoral Investment Plan and recent national transport initiatives, including the Moving Together Strategy, which it said is a strategic framework to improve the efficiency of the transport system, and the Sustainable Mobility Policy Action Plan, which it said sets out the plan to increase public transport, active travel and shared mobility. As IrishCycle.com reported when the Moving Together policy was released, the output of what was claimed to be a congestion-busting strategy was watered down to a general legal review rather than firm commitments on measures which had been long debated, and many will still take years to be enacted. Together, these transport policies set out deliverables over the next five years to improve the transport system and alleviate congestion in the medium to long term, the Department said. The Department said: In addition, a total of 285 electric and battery-electric carriages have been ordered to date in three orders as part of the Dart+ Fleet project. The majority of orders have been battery-electric multiple units (BEMU) trains, enabling use on non-electrified sections of the network where battery charging facilities have been developed. The Department said that it is planned that the new battery-electric sets will be initially deployed on the Northern Commuter Line serving between Dublin and Drogheda from 2027, with the charging infrastructure already installed and now undergoing testing at Drogheda MacBride Station. The Fassaroe Park and Ride facility in Co. Wicklow serves as a strategic bus-based commuting hub along the N11/M11 corridor, forming a wider part of a programme of planned park and ride developments along the N11 corridor, providing sustainable transport options for residents in Wicklow county travelling to Dublin and surrounding areas. The facility has approximately 400 parking spaces and two bus bays with passenger shelters, a dedicated turning circle and a new junction for smooth bus operations, a Department spokesperson said. They added: The construction of the facility is substantially complete with current works relating to preparing the site for operational readiness, and a procurement process is underway to appoint a car-park operator to manage the site and deal with day-to-day operational issues.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 307 Views

- WWW.CYCLINGWEEKLY.COMA big two weeks ahead - Without Pogaar on the start-line, Remco Evenepoel ascends to world championships favourite status after GP Qubec victoryRemco Evenepoel has emerged as the clear favourite to reclaim the world road race title he won four years ago after an electrifying performance at the GP Qubec. The Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe man escaped the group of favourites in the closing laps alongside Lidl-Treks Giulio Ciccone and Uno-X Mobilitys Anton Charmig, before dispatching his companions on the final climb to the line.Evenepoel rode with boldness on a route that is usually suited to the puncheurs of the peloton, although a new final for 2026 helped to swing the pendulum back towards the climbers. He will now attempt to claim victory at the GP Montral on Sunday, before aiming to win the world championships time-trial for the fourth time in succession and take his second road title the week after. "I need to stay calm and take it day by day because Sunday is another day, he said after the race. Then it's next Sunday, and the Sunday after. It's a big two weeks ahead for me."The 26-year-old last won the road race rainbow jersey in 2022 in Wollongong, Australia. With Tadej Pogaar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) concluding his season early following a crash at the Vuelta a Espaa, Evenepoel's stock has risen considerably. "This weekend was the goal to do as good as possible twice, and it's a pretty good start, I must say," he added during his winners press conference."I think I still have a bit of work to do. This weekend, I really wanted to use it to find the best sensations. Its clear I wasnt on a bad day, otherwise you dont win here, but personally, I didnt feel like it was really my best day on the bike. So I think its clear theres still a bit of room for improvement," he said."There are still two weeks before the road race, so Im really going to use this weekend to take a step forward, then follow it up with the time trial, and then another week to do specific training. But clearly it was good, because otherwise you dont win."While Evenepoel is clearly in the ascendancy, several of his would-be rivals for the road race struggled in Qubec. Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) will be tending to his wounds after crashing in the final sprint from the chasing group. He appeared to overlap wheels with Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM); the young Frenchman unable to make an impact on the race, although the course in Montral will suit him better. Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) was another who found the going tough, languishing at the back of the group during the final circuits. The Mexican has spent time training at altitude in Colorado ahead of the Worlds, but faltered in his first Canadian race, finishing more than five minutes down on Evenepoel. Briton Tom Pidcock (Pinarello-Q36.5), fresh from his XCO World Championship victory in Val di Sile, looked in better form. Pidcock finished in fourth place having attacked the Ayuso-Seixas group on the final rise to the line. Although victory at GP Qubec will be a confidence boost for the Olympic champion, his dominance over the next two weeks is far from assured. All the top favourites have been away on various training camps which can deaden the legs on return to racing. It could be that the likes of Del Toro, Seixas and others feel the benefit of the work they have put in in a fortnights time. The 2026 UCI road world championships begin in Montral on the 20th of September with the elite time-trials. The road races for women and men will take place on the 26th and 27th of September respectively.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 255 Views
