Results & Photos: Stage 3 Lloyds Tour of Britain 2026
Conn Mc Dunphy chased the days late attacker on the closing circuits in Beverley on Friday 4 September, before Olav Kooij won the sprint on stage 3 of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men for the eighth stage victory of his career at the race.Kooij (Decathlon CMA CGM) came around the field into a headwind on the rise to the line, holding off Tim Merlier who appeared to have a problem with his chain in the closing metres with Axel Kllberg third and Timothy Dupont fourth. It is his second win in Beverley, having also won there in 2023, and takes him within two of Mark Cavendishs record of ten. With the headwind I really had to wait for the moment that I could find my way through, Kooij said. The way we controlled, the boys got me into the final in a really perfect way.A six-man break went early over the 181.1km from Hull, with mountains leader Michal Schuran taking maximum points on all three category 3 climbs at Burton Road, Tire Ewe Hill and Keepers Hill. Netcompany-INEOS drove the catch as they tried to recover the time Filippo Ganna lost in Thursdays crosswinds.Yorben Lauryssen then went alone and built more than two minutes, taking the second intermediate sprint on the first crossing of the line. Mc Dunphy (APS Pro Cycling) set off after him on the Beverley circuits but could not bridge, and Lauryssen was caught on the final lap. He took the combativity award.Lewis Askey keeps the leaders jersey, still 12 seconds ahead of Tim Wellens with Matteo Trentin third at 19. Merlier takes the points classification, level with Kooij on 43 but ahead on general classification, and Schuran extends his mountains lead to 16 points. Elliot Rowe holds the young rider jersey. These two stages should have been relatively easy on paper for me to keep the jersey, but in the end they were anything but, Askey said. For tomorrow, Im in the best position at the moment no one else is ahead of me, so all I have to do is follow.Irish RidersSam Bennett was the best placed of the five on the day, 67th at 12 seconds, and climbs eight places to 68th overall. Mc Dunphy finished 90th at 1:34 after his chase and drops to 76th, though he is 20th in the points classification on seven. Cian Keogh, Ryan Mullen and Ronan OConnor came home together in the following groups.IRLIrish Riders Stage 3Fri 4 September 2026 Hull Beverley 181.1km67Sam BENNETTPinarello Q36.5 68th overall, +6:30 The biked that helped launched the career of an unlikely Dutch climber
This Champion Mondial, in 80s scarlet Amstel Bier team livery, was ridden by the most flamboyant and storied Dutchman the pro peloton has ever seen. An absolute demon in the mountains, Gert-Jan Theunisse may not hold the crown as the most successful climber in the 1980s, but he was a fierce contender.Career highlights include winning the 1988 Clsica de San Sebastin and taking home the maillot pois rouges in the 1989 Tour de France, remembered as one of the greatest of all time thanks to the battle between Frenchman Laurent Fignon and American Greg Lemond. Theunisse's achievement in Le Tour was all the sweeter for a remarkable Stage 17 win that saw him romp home in a solo breakaway that spanned 50km from the Croix de Fer to the summit of Alpe dHuez.(Image credit: Future)If anything, his appearance was more striking than his Palmares. His long, flowing, fair hair and signature headbands earned him a variety of predictable nicknames, from Hiawatha to the Blonde Angel. Sadly, Theunisses later career was complicated by doping allegations, heart issues and injury.Gerts two years with feeder team Amstel Bier, in 82 and 83, proved the springboard that set him on his way, says current owner Richard Hoddinott of vintage specialists The Velo Pages, and this Gazelle was integral to those first steps. Gert relished team manager Herman Krotts everyman for himself approach as much as the exposure to international competition and the big mountains. Early successes, such as winning the Dutch National Championship, Military, were a true indicator of his future potential. The Gazelle bike features all the classic components of its era, and of course a Coca Cola bottle, as used at the Tour de France during the the late eighties and early 90sFutureFutureFutureFutureFutureFutureFutureThis handsome bike was built by Gazelles Special Racing Division, a dedicated custom workshop within its Dieren factory, which produced high-performance bikes for elite riders. The frame and forks are Reynolds 531, with a build typical of the period that includes full Campagnolo Super Record, Cinelli bar and stem, Unicantor saddle, Mavic GP4 rims and Christophe toe clips.

Ezra Caudell remains in intensive care with head and lung trauma after Philadelphia crash, faces lengthy recovery
American rider Ezra Caudell, 19, remains in intensive care with major injuries following his crash at last weekend's Philadelphia Cycling Classic. In a new statement posted today, George Hincapie and the Modern Adventure Pro Cycling team asked that Caudell and his family be given "the privacy and space they need at this difficult time."The statement did not provide further details about his condition, stressing that future updates would depend on the wishes of the Caudell family."At present, Ezra continues to be supported by medical professionals with his family by his side," the statement said. "Further updates on his condition will be communicated by the team, in accordance with the wishes of the Caudell family, in due course."A GoFundMe campaign, established by a friend close to the family, provides the clearest account to date of Caudells injuries. It says that Caudell suffered major trauma to his lungs and head and is being treated in the ICU at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital. He is working toward stability and is expected to face what will "likely be a long recovery."During the Philadelphia Cycling Classic on 30 August, Caudell and Lotto Intermarch rider Milan Menten were attempting to bridge across to the breakaway when the crash occurred. Menten told Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws that Caudell lost his balance after looking behind to check their advantage over the peloton. His front wheel then struck either the kerb or a drain and the rim broke. "He went straight into a lamppost. He took me down with him," Menten said.Caudell was reportedly knocked unconscious but regained consciousness before being transported to hospital, where he was later placed in an induced coma, according to Het Laatste Nieuws. Menten was also taken to hospital but said Caudell's condition was far more serious. He was shaken up by what he'd seen and stated that he intended to speak with a mental coach after witnessing the crash at close range. On Friday, Modern Adventure said it had contacted Menten to offer its support."We have reached out to Milan Menten to offer our support and recognize the difficult circumstances we now share surrounding this incident," the statement said. "We will continue to navigate this situation together, along with Ezra's family, teammates and friends, supporting one another as we do so."The team has urged supporters and others seeking information to respect the family's privacy wishes during what it described as a sensitive and difficult period."We respectfully ask that they be allowed the privacy and space they need at this difficult time, and to respect that we will share information only when, and if, it is appropriate to do so," the statement said. The GoFundMe campaign is intended to help Caudell's family meet the mounting costs associated with his hospitalisation and recovery. His parents and sister had recently moved to Germany to support Caudells career and travelled from Germany on short notice to be with him after the crash. Organisers said the funds raised will help cover accommodation, meals, travel, medical bills and other unforeseen expenses while the family remains in Philadelphia. Modern Adventure said the support offered to Caudell and his family had been deeply appreciated."We know that the incredible support for Ezra means a great deal to his family, as it does to all of us," the statement said.Caudell hails from Acworth, Georgia. He joined Modern Adventure at the beginning of 2026 after racing as a junior for Team California. This season has been his debut as a professional, and hes made appearances at a host of Belgian spring races as well as stage races like Tour de Wallonie, Tour de Hongrie and Tour of Denmark. In April, he was the youngest rider to race and finish Paris-Roubaix.
