UCI calls for rider safety trackers in all professional bike races after Finlay Tarling's death
Cyclings governing body, the UCI, has called for safety tracking systems to be put in place across all professional road races as quickly as possible following the death of Finlay Tarling. The 19-year-old was struck and killed by a non-race vehicle driver at the Volta a Portugal on 14 August, after he was distanced from the back of the peloton. Earlier this week, a meeting of the Professional Cycling Council (PCC) took place at the UCIs headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland, with stakeholders from mens and womens professional road cycling in attendance. A UCI statement shared on Friday afternoon said a large part of the meeting was dedicated to rider safety, and particularly GPS tracking. In the absence of a joint proposal from the different stakeholder groups, the UCI stressed the urgent need to put in place, as quickly as possible, a dedicated safety system allowing the real-time location of riders and vehicles to be tracked at all professional road cycling events, starting with those in the UCI WorldTour and UCI Womens WorldTour, the UCI said. A safety tracking system was put in place at last year's UCI Road World Championships in Kigali, Rwanda, a year on from the death of 18-year-old Muriel Furrer, who crashed in the junior womens road race at the same event in Switzerland, and was not discovered for 82 minutes. Given safety remains an absolute priority, the UCI will therefore establish protocols and a regulatory framework for the use of real-time tracking systems at races, the UCI said. UCI President David Lappartient reiterated that, in discussions on safety, stakeholders need to move past any disagreements on certain issues and act together. In his view, riders' safety requires this, and safety must never be sacrificed for commercial interests. In race classification terms, professional races are those labelled WorldTour, ProTour, 1.1 and 2.1. Last year, the Tour de Suisse introduced rider and convoy tracking, claiming to be the first race in the world to do so. We cannot completely prevent crashes with these measures, Tour de Suisse race director Olivier Senn said at the time, but we are doing everything we can to ensure that all information is available to the teams and that the consequences are as minimal as possible.GPS tracking enables real-time monitoring of a rider's position, and allows for "immediate identification of any unusual situations, such as a rider suddenly stopping on the course," the UCI said last year. "In such a case, the rider's exact position will be transmitted to the relevant parties in the convoy organisers, UCI Commissaires, medical and security services so that appropriate measures can be taken without delay." Also in its statement on Friday, the UCI announced a meeting will take place at the upcoming Road World Championships in Montral, Canada on 20-22 September, regarding reform to the structure of professional road cycling. Guidelines will then be unveiled in mid-December. The UCI also confirmed a date change for the Vuelta Femenina, which will move from the first week of May to 3-10 October in 2027.

Winspaces new Chinese-made gravel bike takes a 58mm front tyre and costs half as much as its mainstream rivals
Winspace has launched the G5, a new gravel race bike designed to combine aerodynamic efficiency and race-focused handling with clearance for some seriously large tyres. The G5 follows the Chinese brands G3 gravel bike and uses a T1100/T800 carbon-fibre frame, with Winspace claiming a 950g frame weight in a size medium and clearance for 58mm tyres. The bike is available in six sizes and four colours, with geometry aimed squarely at fast gravel riding rather than bikepacking.Prices start at 1,650 / $2,200 / 1,933 for the frameset, or $2,350 with Winspace's Adventure Handlebar, making it significantly cheaper than Factor's recently released Elara frame package, which starts at $5,999 / 7,199.Complete bikes range from $4,799 for a Shimano GRX RX825 Di2 build to $5,999 for the top-spec SRAM Force AXS version, with both builds including the Adventure Handlebar and Ln GRAPID 2 wheels. In between them is a SRAM Rival AXS build priced at $5,199.That makes the G5 a compelling value proposition when compared to Specializeds S-Works Crux 5 with Red AXS XPLR, priced at 11,999 / $14,000, and Cannondales SuperX Lab71, priced at 10,800 / $12,499.There's also an optional suspension fork for riders looking beyond smooth gravel, with a RockShox Rudy Ultimate XPLR adding 30mm of travel and a full lockout for an additional $500.Winspace is one of a growing number of Chinese cycling brands establishing itself in the Western market, having built its reputation around carbon bikes and components alongside its Ln wheel brand.Aero gravel with wide clearance The bike brings together aero tube profiles with wider tyre compatibility. Winspace The G5's most notable feature is arguably its tyre clearance. Winspace claims room for 58mm tyres at the front and 53mm at the rear, giving the bike considerably more scope for wide rubber than many gravel race bikes. The company doesn't specify the rim and tyre combination used to establish those clearance figures, so actual compatibility will likely depend on the setup. The G5 is available as a frameset. Winspace The frame uses a T1100 and T800 carbon-fibre composite construction, with the quoted 950g figure applying to an unpainted, uncut size-medium frame. The bike features a sleek cockpit and race geometry. Winspace Geometry varies across the six sizes, with head angles ranging from 70.5 degrees on the XS to 71.5 degrees on the larger frames. The seat angle is 73.5 degrees across the range, while chainstay length runs from 423mm to 427mm. The down-tube storage looks very neat. Winspace Winspace has given the G5 fully integrated cable routing, a T47 threaded 68mm bottom bracket and a 1-1/2in FSA ACR headset system. There's also internal storage accessed through a removable magnetic cover. The frame uses flat-mount disc brakes with 160mm rotors front and rear, while a 180mm front rotor is also supported.Axle spacing is 12x100mm at the front and 12x142mm at the rear, and the frame is compatible with both mechanical and electronic drivetrains. Maximum chainring sizes are 50T for a 1x setup and 48/36T for a 2x.The optional Rudy Ultimate XPLR fork is designed as a bolt-on upgrade, with the brand saying its 30mm of travel is intended to take the sting out of rough surfaces, while retaining a full lockout for smoother sections and climbs. With its combination of race geometry, aerodynamics, unusually generous tyre clearance and an accessible price, the G5 is an interesting proposition on paper.

'He's a superstar' Wout van Aert wins two-up sprint to claim stage 13 of Vuelta a Espaa
Wout van Aert beat Valentin Paret-Peintre in a two-up sprint to win stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espaa on Friday afternoon. The pair were part of a mega breakaway that formed in the first part of the race and swelled to 43 riders at one point more than a quarter of the entire peloton. With 3.7km to go, Van Aert charged out of a nine-rider group that had whittled down at the front of the race. Soudal Quick-Step's Paret-Peintre chased the Visma-Lease a Bike rider, swapping through turns, but could not match his speed down the finishing straight in Loja. The victory marked Visma-Lease a Bike's fourth at the race, the first three courtesy of Matthew Brennan. "He's a superstar," Brennan said of his team-mate after the stage. More to follow.
