Barcelona is said to have fronted up 8 million; Bulgaria paid a similar sum for the Giro dItalia in May. Its a premium on the going rate for hosting fees: 100k for a stage start and 140k for a stage finish of the Tour de France.Based on this, the gran partida is three starts (3 x 100k) and two finishes (2 x 140k) so the bill ought to be 580k and youd think that could be rounded down 500k as a package.Exclusivity and duration comes at a premium. The Tour de France can pass like a shooting star.A grand dpart is more notable, a more durable fixture than a morning or afternoon. This years Tour will visit places like Hagetmau, Ussel and Champagnole, on the map for a moment but cant hope to generate the barrage of content that a long weekend in Barcelona offers.The start is more than three days of sport. The Tour opened on Wednesday, lodging riders, organisers and more from then until Monday morning. This travelling circus amounts to roughly 1,800 occupants a night alone on the Tours ticket. Add to that attendant media, teams booking for extra staff beyond their 28 bed allocation, plenty of fans and more and it starts to put something back into the local coffers.What other event of this scale can come to town and beam images around the world? Its hardly an unknown quantity. According to the city hall it got 26 million visitors last year, of which 18 million were foreigners; it can be hard to compare measurement methodologies and local boasts but this a lot; not Paris but maybe more than London or Tokyo.Some barcelon complain about overtourism. Social media increasingly herds tourists to visit the same places. Can the Tour redirect people to Montjuic instead? Unlikely. If millions came last year to take selfies at the Sagrada Familia, Nou Camp and La Rambla, who will come next year? Locals may be crowded out of their local bar, bus or even housing but the tourism industry needs flow: airlines, hoteliers, retailers and restaurants count on sustained high tourist visits.One thing specific to this start is the promotion of sport as much as tourism. The lead figure behind the bid has been David Escud, a Catalan politician who held the sports brief and himself a keen athlete. Yes the city wants to show the landmarks but it wants to promote sport. Escud is now leading the bid to bring the Olympic Games back to Barcelona after 1992 and the Tour this weekend is a stage along that route. Similarly the city hall is trying to build more of a cycling culture and the Tour is being used as part of this.Tour organisers ASO are notable for their ability to cross-sell something thanks to a large portfolio of races. ASO help run the Volta a Catalunya every March which finishes with laps around Montjuic. The Vuelta a Espaa, now 100% owned by ASO, had its start in 2023 in Barcelona, opening with an evening time trial and the next day used a hillier version of the Montjuic circuit than the Volta which mirrors tomorrows stage. With hindsight it was a dress rehearsal for 2026.Its not an incongruous start. Catalunya is an autonomous community in Spain but also a a wider identity, parts of France share a link. The eastern Pyrenees see the yellow and red Senyera flag fluttering in the tramontane wind on both sides of the border. The map is from 1608 and the top left of Cataloniae gets close to the foot of the Tourmalet and includes Mondays stage finish in Les Angles or Els Angles as it was once known.Nobody has turned a pedal yet but Barcelona ought to work. It gives glamour to the Tour and works on a practical level as its within reach of France, a foreign start but only just. Internally Tour staff have a house phrase that a good Tour is one that starts well. The 2026 Tour de France sees key rules changes to the team time trial and points competition that could impact the early general classification and see sprinters once again dominate the green jersey. While the basic format of the Tour de France has been unchanged for more than 100 years the rider with the lowest cumulative time at the finish is the winner organisers frequently tweak the rules to ensure the race remains a fair and, ultimately, exciting spectacle. This years race sees the return of a team time trial for the first time since 2019, with a new format that could significantly change team tactics on stage one. Meanwhile, organisers have sought to temper Tadej Pogaar's dominance of the race by changing the points distribution of the green jersey competition which, in turn, could have a significant impact on how a lot of the race is contested. What has changed for 2026? Gone is the old format, where the riders took the time of the fourth rider in the team when they crossed the line, and in comes the one used at Paris-Nice in recent years, in which the teams time for the stage is taken from the first rider in the team to cross the line. The other riders in the team take their own time when crossing the line as their GC time. In Paris-Nice, the effect has been for a team to hammer themselves into the ground before launching their team leader into the closing stages, in a sort of long lead-out. NetcompanyIneos won on that occasion, while the revised format was also used at the Tour Auvergne-Rhne-Alpes, with Visma-Lease a Bike taking the honours. Getty Images Some have been critical of the change; Visma-Lease a Bike boss Richard Plugge thinks it removes the team aspect of the team time trial although he made those comments before the Tour Auvergne-Rhne-Alpes. At the Tour de France, ASO wants to prevent a whole team dominating the top of the GC on the opening stage, and has plotted a route to complement the new format. Stage one finishes with two short climbs. ASO Two short climbs in the final 4km will see teams having to decide when to unleash their Pogaar, Vingegaard or Evenepoel before the line. The 19.6km test concludes with the Cte de Montjuc (1.1km at 5.1%) and a final 800m ramp to Barcelona's Olympic stadium, with an average gradient of 7%. The result will be spectacular, combining the aerodynamic art of a traditional team trial with a tactical conundrum that should make for captivating viewing. On the five designated sprint stages (stages 5, 7, 8, 11 and 12), the points on offer to the winner have increased to 70, rather than the usual 50. There will be 25 points awarded to the winner of the intermediate sprint on those stages, up from 20. All this is designed to make the green jersey a genuine fight between the best sprinters. The changes are also likely to make sprint stages faster from much earlier in the day, with teams chasing breakaways harder to contest the extra points on offer. The rule change is designed to reward the race's pure sprinters. Getty Images While the 2025 green jersey was taken by sprinter Jonathan Milan, who also won two stages, his closest challenger was none other than Tadej Pogaar. He finished ahead of fast men such as Biniam Girmay and Tim Merlier, such was Pogaars dominance of the race. Pogaar has won the yellow, white and polka-dot jerseys at the Tour de France and ASO doesnt want the Slovenian superstar claiming green by accident. Don't rule out seeing Tadej Pogaar in the green jersey again but it's become harder for him to win the competition. Getty Images Eddy Merckx is the only rider to have won the yellow, polka-dot and green jerseys in a single Tour de France (a clean sweep achieved in 1969), but, more than 50 years later, ASO wants the worlds best sprinters focused on the points competition, not Pogaar who wants to continue chipping away at Merckxs records. Whether the changes succeed remains to be seen, but they should make two key parts of the race less predictable and more exciting: the battle for the first yellow jersey in Barcelona and the fight for green across the three weeks to come. The wait is over the Tour de France is here, with the opening stage taking place in Barcelona, Spain, today. The 113th edition of cycling's greatest race kicks off with a team time trial the first at the Tour since 2019. All 23 teams, starting with eight riders each, will contest the 19.6km route on the streets of the Spanish city, finishing at Barcelona's Olympic Stadium. The team time trial is a tantalising prospect, not least because of a rule change introduced for the 2026 edition. This year, the teams time for the stage is taken from the first rider in the team to cross the line. The remaining riders each receive their own finishing time for the general classification. That gives teams a tactical conundrum as to how they should pace the stage, particularly with two short climbs in the closing kilometres. Tadej Pogaar starts the Tour de France as overwhelming favourite, with the Slovenian sensation targeting a record-equalling fifth overall victory.
