Shimano finally brings hydraulic brakes to CUES 9-speed here's why that's great news for riders
Shimano has unveiled its new CUES U4030 9-speed shifters, which bring hydraulic braking to 9-speed level for the first time. The ever-expanding CUES range now surpasses Shimano Sora. It ensures improved hydraulic braking for Shimano-equipped entry-level road and gravel bikes. The new 9-speed shifters mean that, with other CUES components, its finally possible to have a 9-speed groupset with hydraulic brake calipers in both 1x and 2x drop-bar setups. Read more: Shimano CUES has failed to revolutionise entry-level road gearing Shimano's new CUES 2x9 groupset gets hydraulic braking. Shimano The U4030 units come in three versions: CUES ST-U4030-9R right-hand 9-speed Dual Control Lever CUES ST-U4030-L left-hand Dual Control Lever CUES BL-U4030-L left-hand hydraulic brake lever for front single setups Great for new riders and those on a budget CUES hydraulic brakes have proven very capable on my 1990s mountain bike to gravel bike conversion. Scott Windsor / ourmedia On sub-1,000 / $1,200 road and gravel bikes, its tough to find many options with hydraulic disc brakes. Shimano-equipped budget bikes use cable discs (at Sora level). For budget gravel bikes, there are a few options, including Microshift groupsets or hybrid solutions such as TRPs HY/RD. Shimanos hydraulic disc braking is universally excellent on road and gravel bikes. With the new 9-speed lever sharing the same architecture as the 10/11-speed CUES options, we know the ergonomics will be spot-on. The CUES caliper BR-U6030, which Ive used extensively on my 1990s MTB to gravel bike conversion, is an excellent brake. We now look set to see entry-level gravel and road bikes elevated to performance levels not seen before. Brakes with better feel and ample power will add confidence for less experienced riders. Itll also mean riders on a budget won't feel short-changed and in need of upgrades. Great news for Shimano The new CUES left-hand hydraulic brake for 1x9 gravel setups. Shimano Shimano has faced increasing competition across road and gravel groupsets, with SRAM's elevation in the high-end and mid-range gravel groupsets market seeing it assume top spot. Weve also seen a reinvigorated Campagnolo not only challenging Dura-Ace with Super Record, but also Ultegra Di2 and GRX Di2 with the recently launched Record/Record X 13-speed. Where neither SRAM nor Campagnolo can challenge Shimano, however, is at the entry level. SRAMs Apex is an excellent gravel groupset, but it's much more costly than CUES, while Campagnolo hasn't had an entry-level offering in decades. Microshift has some great budget options, but it can't match Shimanos reach. We've seen interesting developments in Chinese groupsets, too, but nothing with the prestige and recognition of Shimanos name. Shimanos long history of attracting new riders with affordable groupsets on affordable bikes has always proved successful. The ergonomics are the same as the 10- and 11-speed shifters. Shimano I had reservations about CUES when it was first released, and on the road, I still do, but in filling in the gaps, Shimano may well have sown the seeds for more generations of loyal riders. SRAM, Campagnolo, Microshift et al should take note.

Waterford section of greenway to New Ross opens link into city expected in late 2027
A long-awaited, around 7km section of the New Ross to Waterford Greenway was mostly opened with little fanfare over the weekend. The route from the edge of Waterfords North Quays project at Ferrybank to Curraghmore in Co Wexford is now open. Kilkenny County Council said it Wishes to advise that the Ferrybank to Curraghmore section of the New Ross to Waterford Greenway is now open to the public. The route has been used by some locals on foot for around a year, but construction barriers made it impractical to cycle. Its opening was largely delayed due to issues with the North Quays project. Kilkenny County Council warned that there is currently limited parking available at Curraghmore, with no parking facilities at the Ferrybank end.IMAGES: Kilkenny County Council posted the following images of the open section of the greenway. The opening over the weekend means that sections of the New Ross to Waterford Greenway are now open at both ends, with a to-be-planned section in the middle (shown as future phase in the map below). Wexford County Council, which is managing the project in association with Kilkenny County Council and Waterford City and County Council, is currently developing plans for the greenway to be completed Delay with North Quays to Waterford City Centre linkThe route will link into Waterford City, but this is also delayed due to issues with the North Quays project. It is around 1.3km from the greenway trailhead to the south quays in Waterford via Rice Bridge Waterford. But while the majority of that distance has been significantly redesigned and revamped as part of the North Quays development, Waterford City and County Council chose to exclude cycle paths on this route. MAP: An image of a map made by IrishCycle.com, with Google Maps, showing the greenway between Ferrybank / North Quays in Waterford to Curraghmore. The new greenway is planned to link into the city via a relocated city train station and a new walking and cycling bridge, which are being built as part of the North Quays project, but Wlrfm.com recently reporteda funding gap for the northside landing area of the sustainable transport bridge. The southern plaza area, on the city centre side of the river, has been publicly funded and is now complete. But the northern plaza was expected to be built by a developer of one of the key new sections of the new development area. The delay is linked to a developer changing plans for residential developments. An objection has been lodged by a local resident about the new plans, and according to waterford-news.ie, planners have requested further information related to the changes, Regarding the new bridge, Sean McKeown, the chief executive of Waterford City and County Council, said: There is a podium required the sustainable transport bridge is effectively tied into the South Quays, but it needs to be properly tied into the North Quays. The estimated opening date for the northern plaza area, which links the bridge to the new train station, is now late 2027.ALSO READ: 27m Active Travel funding used for enabling works on Waterfords car-focused North Quays

Continental releases Tour de France tyres including exclusive 'transparent' Aero 111
Continental has launched a 2026 Tour de France Limited Edition tyre set, combining the brand's aero-focused Aero 111 front tyre with a Grand Prix 5000 S TR rear tyre. Both tyres carry Tour de France branding, and this is the first time the Aero 111 has been available in a 'transparent' (tan) sidewall. According to Continental, the tan-coloured Aero 111 will be available exclusively as part of the Tour de France bundle and won't be sold separately. The package pairs a 29mm Aero 111 front tyre with a 30mm Grand Prix 5000 S TR rear tyre and will retail for 199.99 / $257.95 / 216.95. What is the Aero 111? We've seen the Aero 111 tyre raced as early as 2024. George Scott / Our Media The Aero 111 tyre was launched in 2024, positioned as Continental's most aerodynamic road tyre, developed in partnership with Swiss Side and DT Swiss. Its distinctive tread pattern is designed to reduce aerodynamic drag and enhance the so-called 'sailing effect' in crosswinds. The tyre can be bought separately, and as part of a bundle with the latest DT Swiss ARC racing wheels and a Grand Prix 5000 S TR. This is the first time the tyre will be available in a tan colourway, though. Continental The Aero 111 is said to weigh 265g in its 29mm size (interestingly, 15g lighter than when the tyre initially launched), while the 30mm Grand Prix 5000 S TR is claimed to weigh 305g. Both tyres use Continental's BlackChili rubber compound and Vectran puncture-protection layer, and are tubeless-ready and approved for use with hookless-compatible wheel systems (within ETRTO recommendations). What happened to the Archetype and where is the TT TR? We saw the nominally 30mm Archetype tyre still being raced at this year's Omloop het Nieuwsblad (as well as fitted to some bikes at the Tour Auvergne-Rhne-Alpes), indicating it remains a popular tyre. Simon von Bromley / Our Media The combination appears to throw into doubt the future of last years limited-edition Archetype tyre. We speculated that tyre could have been a precursor to a new Grand Prix race tyre, but instead Continental is now promoting the more broadly available Aero 111 / Grand Prix 5000 S TR combination. While this doesnt rule out a new tyre coming in the future, it could suggest the Archetype (and any variations thereof) requires more development before its considered ready for consumers. We're also somewhat surprised Continental hasn't paired the Aero 111 with its Grand Prix 5000 TT TR on outright performance grounds. The Tour Auvergne-Rhne-Alpes saw many teams choosing to run the faster Grand Prix 5000 TT TR tyres. Ashley Quinlan / Our Media The TT TR sits at the very top of Continental's road-racing range and, thanks to its lighter weight (280g claimed in a size 30mm) and thinner two-ply carcass construction, is ostensibly the faster tyre. While the company positions it primarily as a time-trial and race-day option, it has become increasingly common to see professional riders using TT TR tyres in road races where outright speed usually takes precedence over longevity. For that reason, we'd be surprised if Continental-sponsored WorldTour teams line up using the Aero 111 / Grand Prix 5000 S TR combination during this year's Tour de France. Its worth noting that the TT TR is only available with black sidewalls, meaning teams may opt to run the standard black Aero 111 front tyre in their preferred size to avoid an awkward aesthetic. Those buying the limited-edition set will find a small Tour de France logo printed on the sidewall. Continental Were also prepared for bikes to be shod with the limited-edition tyre at official pre-Tour press events, with a switch coming later. The inclusion of the Grand Prix 5000 S TR in the retail bundle is likely a more pragmatic decision. The S TR is considered an all-round race tyre, with greater durability and therefore broader appeal for everyday riders. Despite this, Continental says the limited-edition tyres will be available to its sponsored teams competing at the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.

Why BMC Should Think Bigger in Andermatt
BMC has opened its first Swiss test center in Andermatt, right at the foot of some of Switzerlands most spectacular mountain roads. We joined Fabian Cancellara and BMC CEO John Glett for the official opening, jumped on a bike, and took a first look at the new concept. The idea is compellingbut given the location and its immense potential, we expected more.At first glance, it sounds like a compelling idea: a BMC test center in the heart of the Alps, with five legendary mountain passes right on its doorstep. BMC neither has the capacity nor the need to equip countless dealers with large demo fleets. So why not create a central hub where dealers can send customers for extensive test ridesor that tourists and prospective buyers can visit directly? One of the most appealing aspects is the opportunity to compare different models and frame sizes back-to-back to find the right fit. Thats exactly what Lee, who runs the test center and tour operator Swiss Cycology together with his partner Matt, sees as one of the concepts biggest advantages.Visitors can also book guided tours, and Andermatt is a smart base for exactly that. Right on the doorstep are five of Switzerlands most famous mountain passes: Furka, Gotthard, Oberalp, Nufenen and Susten. While the Tremola road on the Gotthard Pass, with its historic cobblestones and more than 20 switchbacks, ranks among Europes most iconic climbs, the Furka Pass offers spectacular views of the Rhone Glacier and a road that famously appeared in a James Bond film. At 2,478 metres, the Nufenen Pass is the highest mountain pass located entirely within Switzerland, while the Susten Pass impresses with its flowing layout and expansive scenery. The Oberalp Pass links Andermatt with the Surselva region and provides a slightly more relaxed riding experience. While names like Stelvio, Alpe dHuez and Mont Ventoux may carry greater international prestige, Switzerlands alpine passes are every bit their equal when it comes to riding quality and scenery. In fact, some of Europes finest road cycling routes can be found right here. The test center itself is stylish, though not particularly remarkable. It is located in Andermatt Reuss, a newly developed district being built by Egyptian billionaire and investor Samih Sawiris as part of his vision to transform Andermatt into a luxury destination. Outside the winter season, however, the area still feels surprisingly quiet. The test center is intended to help bring more activity and life to the development. The core idea of a centralized test center is a good one and likely relevant for many brands. However, it is not particularly new. To be honest, based on BMCs invitation, we expected something more. The crucial leap from a test center to a true brand experience centerwhere visitors can experience not just the bikes but the brand itself through carefully curated experienceshas not happened yet. And that distinction will become increasingly important in the years ahead. Many Western bicycle brands are facing growing pressure. New Asian manufacturers are entering the market at remarkable speed and with rapidly improving quality, a trend that was clearly visible at the China International Bicycle Fair in May. As a result, the question of how brands can differentiate themselves beyond the product alone is becoming increasingly important. Unique experiences will be a key part of that equation. The experience economy is not only a broad trendit is booming.Clubhouses from brands like Rapha and Pas Normal Studios already offer much more than products and test bikes, creating spaces built around community, events and workshops. Yet even these concepts still leave room for further evolution. The location has the potential to become an emotional catalyst for the BMC brandif it is used to its full potential. As a test center, the concept works. As an experience center capable of creating unforgettable moments and turning both new and existing customers into long-term brand advocates, however, it has yet to realize what is possible. The ingredients for a genuine Swiss BMC Experience are all there.Find out more on swisscycologytours.com/bmcbikehire.Der Beitrag Why BMC Should Think Bigger in Andermatt erschien zuerst auf GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine.
