- BIKERUMOR.COM2026 Sea Otter Sneak Peek: Aventons New eGravel Prototype Teases Lighter MotorThe Sea Otter Classic is an exciting event, as we sometimes get to see the future of a brands offerings via prototypes. Well, this last Sea Otter was no different. The Southern California eBike brand, Aventon, has been enjoying some well-deserved success after the launch of its first full-suspension eMTB. Using that momentum to build on, they decided to display and tease us with a prototype of their new eGravel bike!(Photo / Aventon)Before you guys get too excited, know my photos are kinda shite. Heres why: I got to the Aventon booth on day one, and the bike was in a state of disassembly. That is to say that the componentry was in the midst of being exchanged. So, thinking I would come back later, I just snapped a few photos. Well, I didnt make it back to their booth to get proper photos of the completed bike. What? I was busy! The photos of the assembled bike that you just saw were sent by Aventon and are credited as such. All the shitty photos are mine and are also credited as such.Aventons Prototype eGravel Bike(Photos / Ron Frazelle)There is one really important thing that will be part of the production model: the new motor. They developed the new motor to be a more compact and lightweight version of their proprietary Ultro motor found on the Current full-suspension eMTB. Its called the UltroL, and looks to be quite a bit more compact than the UltroX. Possibly the new name, and looks to be the same touch screen display as the Current (Photos / Ron Frazelle)The new eGravel bike will have a 500Wh battery. Aventon is shooting for 34lbs for a proposed total bike weight. Which I thought was impressive. (Photos / Ron Frazelle)Its been in development for a couple of years, but not quite as long as the Current was. Sizing is expected to be small to large, but there is a slight chance the small size will be cut depending on the mediums sizing. Obviously, there is no pricing or even hints at any type of pricing.(Photos / Ron Frazelle)Theyre looking at launching this bad boy in Spring 2027. Stay tuned here for more info as it comes in.Aventon.comThe post 2026 Sea Otter Sneak Peek: Aventons New eGravel Prototype Teases Lighter Motor appeared first on Bikerumor.0 Comments 0 Shares 357 Views
- BIKERUMOR.COMMountain Bikes Spotted at Sea Otter: One-Off, a Little Wacky & Some We Just Dont See That OftenIm a bike nerd. I think about bikes; I talk about bikes; I probably bother people about bikes. During Sea Otter, even when we werent working, the BikeRumor team still talked about bikes. Were dorks, which is why a place like Sea Otter is perfect. There are tons of bikes to look at and drool over. Many times, it is the bikes in the booths that we ogle at. Other times, it is someones personal bike that turns our heads. Often, and especially this year, it was due to the particularly large wheels. Other times, it was the crazy paint jobs that caught your eye. (Seriously, go read Jeremys post about the paint!)They all draw me in. But the ones I really like are the truly unique, one-off custom frame builds of the mountain bike variety. Its the full suspension, long-travel (usually), gravity-oriented bikes that catch my eye. So, without further ado, here are some special full travel rigs I found creeping around Sea Otter.Taken Cycles was one of the first brands that I saw that really caught my eye. First, I didnt think Id ever heard of a bike brand dubbed Taken. Secondly, it features a high-pivot take on the CBF suspension platform. Ive yet to see a CBF bike with a mid- or high-pivot. The closest thing would be Canfields Jedi DH bike with their CBF-adjacent Formula 1 suspension.CBF x I-Track mashup should equal some high-pivot pedal efficiencyMaking their first Sea Otter appearance, Taken is a new bike brand out of Boise, Idaho. The frames are aluminum, can run between 150-170mm of rear travel simply by changing the shock stroke, and are 29 or MX-wheel compatible. Plus, they look damn good! Id love to get one in and see how the CBF platform feels with a more rearward axle path. I couldnt find a social media or website for them (only Liam Neeson movies popped up), but well keep an eye out.I spotted this steel big-travel monster outside of the DVO booth at Sea Otter. Unfortunately, the rider wasnt around (hes a DVO athlete) and the employee at the booth didnt know much about the bike. However, Im pretty sure it is a Vessel, built by Jack Harle. A lot is going on here, with a mid/high-pivot, pivots, links, and a floating brake arm.Okay, I wasnt completely unaware of all of the bikes I saw. This post is more about covering the truly unique mountain bikes seen at Sea Otter. This includes brands we dont often see here in the States, such as Starling.Technically, the driveside is the left pic, but its up for debate with this Saturn V2The Starling on display at the Samox booth was the Saturn V2. Steel bikes are boutique enough, but this is truly weird (by weird, I mean very awesome!). The driveside sports a very unconventional belt-driven singlespeed, with the chainring (essentially an idler) disconnected from the crankarms.Rather, the chainring is on the non-driveside (or, in this case, would it be the driveside?), with a chain running up to an idler. Basically, these two idlers are connected through the frame, driving the bike forward. Starling did this to create a DH bike with no chain growth. Ive never seen it in person (you probably havent either), and it is rad. And, yes, I apologize for the poor lighting in the photos. The Yoshimura booth at Sea Otter had a pretty rad Gamux DH bike. Again, maybe not a one-off, but extremely rare and, frankly, something Ive never seen in person before. The story I was told is that it belonged to a former Gamux athlete and was sold to a friend of the dudes at the Yoshi both. He was kind enough to allow them to display it, complete with Yoshimura products.Gamux machines the frame from a block of alloy, but an interesting point they shared with me was the carbon inserts. Gamux designed the frame to fit these carbon strips (I tried to get a good photo) to adjust the frames stiffness to the riders preference. I thought it was a cool idea, but just a rad bike overall.Keeping in line with the gearbox DH bikes, I spotted this Shredline DH bike at the Spank booth (I realize that sounds funny). Along with a gearbox and a carbon belt, Spank fitted the bike with as many of their components as you can imagine. Ive never heard of them, and it looks like a rad bike. While this Shredline DH bike was in the Spank tent, I also spotted what seemed to be a longer-travel Shredline trail/enduro bike rolling around Sea Otter the one that Jordan got the details on here. Even more gearbox bikes! This is the Tripping Balls bike by Blues Bikes, which was located at the Gates tent at Sea Otter. It is a very cool-looking steel frame, featuring 145mm of rear travel paired to a 160mm fork. It can be full 29er or MX wheels, and of course, sports a Gates carbon belt and a 9-speed Pinion gearbox. The Tripping Balls can be a mullet or 29 and is built around the Chris Canfield Suspension Formula. (I think that means CBF; it looks like a CBF)Pretty spectacular Ti framesCane Creek was showing off their new Invert Enduro fork, along with their other suspension and component offerings at Sea Otter. To do so, they had two very, very cool steel Significant Other frames built up.Awesome detailsThese are hand-built titanium bikes from Golden, Colorado. I cant remember the names of the frames, but there was a shorter and longer travel version. And, names are besides the point. I mean, just look at them. Hands down, these are some of the best-looking bikes at Sea Otter, in my opinion.I couldnt find much information about this Vessel bike, but I believe it is Jack Harles (Vessels owner) personal bike. Its a big rig170mm rear travel with 180mm fork, a high stack (660mm), and LONG chainstays (modular at 460mm or 470mm). And, I mean, just look at it. The bike looks rad, give his website a look.Alright, there was another cool enduro bike I spotted, ARC. My recollection is alloy lugs and carbon tubing. The guys I chatted with explained they are still working on prototypes, and gave me a bunch of other info that, well, my phone didnt save. Sorry boys. Still a cool bike, though. If youre familiar, link them in the comments!Okay, lastly, here are a few bikes that are either just really cool or I just dont see them very often.Neko and the Frameworks crew were bouncing around Sea Otter all weekend. I spotted several iterations of his bike, including a 32 Frameworks mega-mullet. But this DH rig is Anna Newkirks race bike and just too cool not to snap a photo of. Atherton is another brand we see very few of. There were a few around Sea Otter this weekend, including some with Gee on top.Pretty cool Pivot Switchblade with some funky colors. This Ripmo was at the Ibis booth. I stopped and looked every time I walked by, and I walked by a lot! Rumor has it that an Ibis staffer is building it up. Well done; it looks ready to shred.I know a Santa Cruz V10 isnt very uncommon. However, Jackson Goldstones v10 is pretty rare! It was on display at the Fox tent, along with Jacksons Speedsuit. I can confirm that it wasnt Jackson himself on display in his race kit, unless he is just able to hold still for a really, really long time.If you have the choice, which one would you take home? The post Mountain Bikes Spotted at Sea Otter: One-Off, a Little Wacky & Some We Just Dont See That Often appeared first on Bikerumor.0 Comments 0 Shares 346 Views

- BIKERUMOR.COMDunlop Enters the MTB Tire Market With Geomax Tire Range Launched at Sea OtterWith Sea Otter taking place at the Laguna Seca Raceway, it didnt seem too odd to see huge Dunlop Tires banners around the expo area. It came as a bit of a surprise, however, to learn that Dunlop had a booth in the expo and was launching its new Geomax range of mountain bike tires. While these are the first bike tires that weve ever seen from the brand, I quickly learned that John Dunlop created the first practical pneumatic tire for his sons tricycle in the late 1800s, which led to him founding the Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company shortly after. So, technically, Dunlop is returning to the cycling market with its new Geomax MB (mountain bike) tire range. In doing so, the brand aims to apply its decades of experience developing tires for the highest levels of motocross and supercross racing to the mountain bike market. Thus, the designs of the new Geomax MB tires borrow heavily from the brands MX tire design principles and rubber compounds.Screenshot of a cool image from the Dunlop website. The brand is hoping to transfer its motocross expertise to the MTB market. At present, Dunlop has its Geomax MB tires split into two lines, both with front- and rear-specific tread designs, and offered in Downhill or Enduro casings. The Geomax MB34 line is built for maximum traction and control for aggressive riders and terrain, while the Geomax MB53 is more focused on rolling speed and efficiency. Dunlops tire naming may be a touch confusing, but the tires look solid. Dunlop Geomax MB34Dunlops descriptions of the MB34 tires.According to Dunlop, the Geomax MB34 dominates soft, technical terrain with unmatched traction, control, and confidence. These tires were designed specifically for aggressive riding and maximum traction in loose conditions and technical terrain. Thats visually obvious with the taller tread lugs, sharper edges, and generally aggressive appearance. These tires look grippy. As with Dunlops motocross tires (and lots of other mountain bike tires), the front and rear have significantly different tread patterns designed to handle their differing demands. Both the front and rear MB34 tires will be available in the more robust Downhill casing with a dual-ply 60 tpi construction and a DH Advanced Apex design to provide sidewall support, lateral stiffness, and flat protection. The MB34 tires are also available in the more supple Enduro casing with a single-ply 60 tpi construction and an EN Advanced Apex design that claims to reduce rotational weight while remaining supportive and durable.Geomax MB34FThe MB34F is Dunlops aggressive front tire. The F stands for front, and the MB34F has been specifically designed for use as a front tire. According to Dunlop, the MB34F is designed to deliver consistent, ultra-predictable handling with precise turn-in and strong mid-corner stability. Drawing from Geomax MX front tire design principles, the goal was confidence through accuracy and feel at the limit. The MB34F comes in 29 only with 2.4 and 2.6 width options. The center tread consists of an alternating pattern of tall soft-touch hex blocks and larger hexagonal split blocks. According to Dunlop, the sipe, or recess, in the soft-touch hex blocks allows them to better absorb impact and damp the ride feel. At the same time, the ramped center channel in the split blocks allows them to effectively pierce through the dirts surface yet keeps the knobs together to reduce knob flex and enhance braking stability. The intermediate zone is home to an alternating pattern of transition knobs. Half of these feature Dunlops PCBT (Progressive Cornering Block Technology), which refers to the small raised sections that provide additional biting edges without sacrificing stability. A stout row of rectangular shoulder knobs ties it all together. According to Dunlop, theyve given the MB34F a slightly rounder side-to-side profile, which they claim provides a lighter steering feel and a larger contact patch at lean.Geomax MB34RThe MB34Rs center tread looks like it will probably provide heaps of braking bite in loose conditions. The PCBT design is clearly visible on the transition and shoulder knobs. Not surprisingly, the R stands for rear, and the MB34R is designed specifically for use as a rear tire. Dunlop says this tire applies similar traction-first thinking from Dunlops motocross program, built to generate powerful forward drive and lateral bite while maximizing braking control and rear-end stability. Every knob shape, edge, and spacing decision was made to optimize ground penetration and terrain conformity.Looking at the MB34Rs tread, its quite obvious that braking traction was a big priority. The wide, rectangular paddles in the center tread are quite tall with broad faces to dig into loose soils, whether youre on the brakes or on the gas. The intermediate zone features transition knobs with Dunlops PCBT to provide lateral grip and control when cornering. Likewise, the large shoulder knobs also feature the PCBT tech with extra biting edges.Compared to the MB34F, the MB34Rs profile isnt quite as round. The slightly flatter profile in the middle is claimed to result in a broad accelerating and decelerating surface area. When cornering, this emphasizes the transition and shoulder knobs, which are numerous. The MB34R comes in both 27.5 and 29 diameters and in 2.4 and 2.6 widths. The MB34F (left) and MB34R (right)Geomax MB34 Sizes, Weights, and PricingMB34 Downhill Casing $110Geomax MB34F (Front) Downhill Casing/Ultra-soft Compound29 x 2.4: Claimed weight: Not specified29 x 2.6: Claimed weight: 1425gGeomax MB34R (Rear) Downhill Casing/Ultra-soft Compound27.5 x 2.4 Claimed weight: 1354g27.5 x 2.6 Claimed weight: 1442g29 x 2.4 Claimed weight: 1475g29 x 2.6 Claimed weight: Not specifiedMB34 Enduro Casing: $100Geomax MB34F (Front) Enduro Casing/Ultra-soft Compound29 x 2.4: Claimed weight: Not specified29 x 2.6: Claimed weight: 1319gGeomax MB34R (Rear) Enduro Casing/Soft Compound27.5 x 2.4 Claimed weight: 1253g27.5 x 2.6 Claimed weight: 1272g29 x 2.4 Claimed weight: 1347g29 x 2.6 Claimed weight: Not specifiedDunlop Geomax MB53While the MB34 tires were designed for maximum control, Dunlop says the MB53 tires were engineered with rolling speed as the primary objective. The MB53 platform was built to feel fast, fluid, and controlled at high pace. Compared to the MB34, these tires have different tread patterns, slightly shorter knobs, and ramped leading edges. Dunlop goes on to say that they were intentionally designed to deliver a slightly looser, more progressive drift character while maintaining forward momentum. The MB53 tires feature front- and rear-specific tread designs. They come in both the burlier dual-ply Downhill casing and the more supple and slightly lighter single-ply Enduro casing. Geomax MB53FThe MB53F is a front tire thats more focused on rolling speed. All of the knobs feature Dunlops signature PCBT tech.According to Dunlop, the MB53F features strategically distributed open spacing to support weight on hardpack while still allowing enough edge engagement to bite into intermediate terrain. The pattern promotes smooth steering input and predictable feedback at higher speeds. The knobs are medium height with generously ramped leading edges on the alternating 1-2-2 wide-2-1 center tread pattern. The pattern leaves a fair bit of space between knobs, yet they look evenly dispersed in the intermediate zone and along the shoulder. All of the knobs on the MB53F feature Dunlops PCBT tech for extra biting edges. They also state that the center knobs have Foundation Bracing, meaning they are tied at the base to reduce knob flex and squirm under hard braking. As with the MB34F, Dunlop has given the MB53F a rounder profile, which they claim provides a light steering feel and larger contact patch at lean. The MB53F comes in 29 only, and in 2.4 and 2.6 widths.Geomax MB53RThe MB53R had broad but offset center tread knobs and no shortage of transition along with a uniform layout of transition and shoulder knobs with PCBT.At the rear of the bike, Dunlop says the new MB53R utilizes offset knob distribution to maintain roll efficiency at every lean angle. Transition knobs are tuned for smooth engagement, delivering controlled slides and progressive traction as the rider loads the rear tire under braking or acceleration. This tire has a fairly substantial row of wide, but slightly offset, rectangular knobs down the middle. These have ramped leading edges and squared-off braking edges. The intermediate zone is packed with transition knobs with Dunlops PCBT tech for extra biting edges, as is the row of substantial shoulder knobs. Similar to the MB34R, the tire profile has been flattened slightly in the middle to increase surface area and enhance braking and acceleration performance. The MB53R comes in both 27.5 and 29 diameters, and in 2.4 and 2.6 widths. With an emphasis on rolling speed, the MB53 tires come in Soft and Soft-Medium compounds no Ultra-soft. - BIKERUMOR.COMPearl Izumi Launches New Pi PRO/BLACK Line of Premium Aero Road ApparelPearl Izumi is taking a strong step into the pointy end of the road apparel market with its new Pi PRO/BLACK lineup. With compressive materials, low weights, modern cuts, and aerodynamic textures, Pi PRO/BLACK is made for riding fast on the race course and off. The lineup consists of bib shorts, a standard jersey, a mesh jersey, a wind vest, and aero socks for both men and women. This is the brands second color-coded apparel collection this year, following the Pi/RED bibs and jerseys, which came out about a month ago. The new Pi PRO/BLACK apparel officially launched at Sea Otter, and I swung by the booth to check it out. Pearl Izumi also sent me a few pieces to check out ahead of time, so I have actual weights and some fit notes on its new race-oriented premium apparel lineup.Pearl Izumis new Pi PRO/BLACK bibs and jersey displayed at Sea Otter. (photos/Jeremy Benson)Ive got the Pi PRO/BLACK Bibs in a size medium, and they fit me relatively well at 60 and 170 lbs. It seems like a large could probably work for me too, but I havent tried one on. The mediums are a bit tight when pulled on, because they are very compressive. The fit is modern with a longer inseam that covers more of my longer-than-average thighs. The bib straps are wide and super soft, and the chamois feels excellent. Overall, their fit and feel are very race-oriented, which is the point. They weighed 161 grams on my scale, which is 26 grams more than the claimed weight listed above, but still very lightweight.Pi PRO/BLACK Jersey: $225The Pi PRO Black Jerseys aero-textured sleeves are fairly long, and the jersey has a compressive fit, too. According to Pearl, the Pi PRO/BLACK Jersey is the pinnacle of precision performance engineered for riders who measure effort in watts, not words.Reportedly, the ultra-light fabric makes the jersey 30% lighter than the standard PRO jersey. Its intended to be compressive, helping to enhance circulation while supporting the muscles during intense efforts. Additionally, the snug fit helps riders cut through the wind, and the ribbed aero texture on the sleeves is said to smooth airflow and save precious watts. The Pi PRO/BLACK Jersey comes in mens and womens versions, with a modern, race-oriented fit, aero-textured sleeves, and lightweight materials. The PRO/BLACK Jersey has sweat-activated In-R-Cool tech built in, which claims to help regulate body temperature.
