Limerick. There were 5 races in total promoted by host club Greenmount Cycling Academy.Conditions were cold and windy with the threat of passing hailstone showers.First up at 9.30am was the U6/8/10 fun race. Run off in dry conditions but with a hard pull all the way to the finish line. Our other youth races were run off before the rain arrived. This was a stiff test with races breaking up and riders finishing in 1s and 2s.Next up was the Conor ODea Perpetual Cup for C3/Women riders over 7 laps. This race was hard-fought with breaks not gaining much more than 100m over the peloton. The stiff headwind on the main-line straight meant difficult conditions for any breakaways. However with 3 laps to go Damien Culhane (Newcastlewest CC) got a small gap and steadily increased it over the remaining laps to lead by 50s with a lap to go. Behind the race for second place came down to a bunch sprint won by Richard Quinn (CRNS) just ahead of Sean Conroy (Greenmount CA). Damien was presented with the Conor ODea cup by Conor himself. The second race on the menu was the C1/C2 race with the C2 riders getting a 4 minute handicap over the C1 riders. The winner would take home the Kieran MacMahon Memorial Cup in memory of Kieran, a well known cyclist who was taken from us 22 years ago in June. The bigger C2 group set about keeping ahead of the C1 bunch. However the C1 firepower reduced the gap by about 30s each lap and after a split in the C1 chase the bridge was made by 5 C1 riders with 7 laps remaining. This further split in the remaining laps to leave 6 up front. Eoin Clifford (Velo Revolution/Speed Queen), John OMahony (Newcastlewest CC), Oran OCallaghan and Darragh McGee (OLeary Stone CC), Paul Kennedy (Burren CC) and Rory Condon (Zappi Racing Team) making a strong group that forged ahead to fight for victory.Condon and Clifford got a gap with 2 laps to go and had a 30s lead with a lap to go. Clifford escaped Condon on the tough side of the circuit to win by 20s in the end. Kennedy led the other quartet home for 3rd. Kierans sister Claire presented the Kieran MacMahon cup to a well deserving Eoin Clifford from Bandon. A first win for the season for Velo Revolution/Speed Queen team. Thanks & AcknowledgementsMassive thanks to locals in Kilteely village, all the residents along the route, Kilteely GAA, supporters, marshals, lead car drivers, moto drivers, judges and riders for making it a successful days racing.Big thanks to John, Toms and Brian our Commissaires, Niall and Limerick Red Cross keeping everyone safe and Ed Chief judge for sorting all the results.
