Pro Log: Tadej Pogaar is dominating the Giro, Demi Vollering victorious at Itzulia, Mark Cavendish back to winning ways
CyclistPro Log: Tadej Pogaar is dominating the Giro, Demi Vollering victorious at Itzulia, Mark Cavendish back to winning waysWelcome back to another edition of Pro Log. Theres plenty to talk about this week, from Demi Vollerings overall success at Itzulia Women and Mark Cavendishs stage win at the Tour de Hongrie.Theres also the ongoing Giro dItalia, which Tadej Pogaar (UAE Team Emirates) currently leads by 2min 40sec over Dani Martnez (Bora-Hansgrohe) and 2min 58sec from Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers). Related Posts Mark Cavendish delays retirement to race for one more year in 2024 Classic climb: Passo dello Stelvio, the worlds greatest climb Giro dItalia 2024: Route, how to watch, start list and everything you need to know Tadej Pogaar leads Giro dItaliaDario Belingheri/Getty ImagesIn news that will come as a shock to absolutely nobody, UAE Team Emirates Tadej Pogaar is dominating in his debut Giro dItalia. Today is a rest day at Italys Grand Tour but dont discount him beating his teammates on any rest day rides just to emphasise his superiority.Pogaar has held the maglia rosa since his breakaway win back on Stage 2. He took further stage wins back to back on Stage 7s time-trial and the mountainous Stage 8 to further consolidate his lead heading into the second week. He even found the energy to lead out his teams sprint train in the final few hundred metres of yesterdays sprint stage.Talking of sprinters, Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) and Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) won Stages 3 and 4 respectively, while Visma-Lease a Bikes Olav Kooij pipped Milan on the line for his maiden win on Stage 9 after reeling in a late attack from Jhonatan Narvez (Ineos Grenadiers). Some breakaway attempts have been successful, however. Benjamin Thomas secured Cofidiss first victory of the season on Stage 5, while Movistars Pelayo Sanchez broke French hearts by outsprinting Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-QuickStep) at the finish line the following day.The first week of the Giro dItalia has also seen some big names forced to withdraw already. Biniam Girmay (Intermarch-Wanty) hit the ground twice in a few kilometres on Stage 4, leading him to abandon the race, while Visma-Lease a Bike have also lost Robert Gesink and Christophe Laporte. The race reconvenes tomorrow for Stage 10, a 141.2km ride from Pompei to Cusano Mutri (Bocca della Selva). As yet, theres no decision on a possible re-route away from the Stelvio on Stage 16, which is still covered in snow in places, with the risk of a potential avalanche even if the road is cleared in time.Demi Vollering wins Itzulia WomenAlex Broadway/Getty ImagesDemi Vollering won the three-day Itzulia Women in another display of team dominance. It means that, since the race started in 2022, every single stage has been won by SD-Worx.It started two years ago when Vollering swept all three stages on her way to the overall. Then last year she shared the spoils with teammate Marlen Reusser (two for Vollering, one for Reusser), with Reusser winning overall. Finally, this year it was teammate Mischa Bredewold who kicked things off, winning back-to-back stages, before Vollering took Stage 3 and the overall.Mark Cavendish bags second win of season @MarkCavendish wins the second stage of Tour de Hongrie! The legend himself #TourdeHongrie pic.twitter.com/wGJSSsF8q1 Eurosport (@eurosport) May 9, 2024 In an encouraging sign that he is returning to form, Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) sprinted to Stage 2 honours at the Tour de Hongrie, scaling a Category 3 climb with less than 25km to the finish in the process. His teammates were slightly disjointed in the final 2km but Cavendish sat on the wheel of trusted Michael Mrkv and opened his sprint in the last 150m.Cavendish crossed the line first in front of a speedy Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco-AlUla). The Dutch rider would later be penalised for obstructing Sam Welsford (Bora-Hansgrohe), be given a CHF200 fine (about 175), a ten-second penalty and a 20% points deduction. Despite that, he kept his second place. Is win #35 coming for Cavendish at the Tour de France?See you next week. The post Pro Log: Tadej Pogaar is dominating the Giro, Demi Vollering victorious at Itzulia, Mark Cavendish back to winning ways appeared first on Cyclist.

Pearl Izumi Womens Jersey Review (Weve Tested A Bunch!)
A good bike jersey helps keep you comfortable on the bike AND makes you feel like a million bucks. Thats why Ive reviewed several Pearl Izumi womens bike jerseys to help you find your perfect match. From the premium performance of the Womens PRO Short Sleeve Jersey to the breezy versatility of the Womens Summit Short Sleeve Jersey, and the dependable, staple-worthy Womens Attack Short Sleeve Jersey, each piece has something unique to offer. Whether youre a roadie seeking aerodynamic perfection or a mountain biker looking for comfort under the desert sun, one of these jerseys is bound to suit your needs. I have been testing these jerseys all spring, from the mountain bike trails of Arizona to the gravel backroads of Idaho, and the tarmac right out my front door. They have all been heavily worn during testing, and gone through plenty of wash cycles. Read on to see how they performed. Want even more jersey options? Youll want to check out my guide to the best womens cycling jerseys and the best womens mountain bike jerseys. Table Of ContentsWomens PRO Short Sleeve JerseyWomens Summit Short Sleeve JerseyWomens Attack Short Sleeve JerseyWomens PRO Short Sleeve JerseyPros:Buttery soft materialBeautiful color and fitWaistband is only at the rear of the jerseyBreathableCons:Limited color optionsRace fit isnt super forgivingPrice: $180 at PearlIzumi.com*It didnt take long for the Pearl Izumi Pro short sleeve jersey to become one of my all-time favorites. And not only do I love it, I cant tell you how many compliments Ive gotten from other riders. Additionally, every time I post a photo or video of me wearing this on Instagram, I get a lot of positive comments. The salmon-esque color is just really, really pretty. (Dont love it? Your other option is black. The limited color choices are the only real drawback of the Pro jersey). In addition to looking good, it FEELS good. Yes, this is a premium-priced jersey, but that premium price pays off in terms of fabric quality. It is buttery smooth and feels great on your skin. The fabric is also REALLY breathable. The front and underarm panels have tiny perforations in the fabric while the back is more solid. This makes the jersey ideal for hot weather riding, but less so for shoulder season days. Ive been testing this jersey during the spring, and even on warmer days, moving quickly or going downhill, Ive quickly gotten chilly. It has been sad to have to layer a jacket over it most days. (Did I mention that it is too pretty to cover up?!?).As is to be expected with a race style jersey, the cut is very tailored. This makes it beautiful on those days when your body is looking its best, but is a bummer on post-lunch rides where you have a bit of a belly. That said, I did appreciate that the waistband has an elastic, silicone gripper at the rear to keep the jersey from riding up, but no band at the front of the jersey. This keeps anything from digging in at the tummy. There are three rear pockets, and Id say they are of pretty average size. I can easily get my cell phone in the center pocket, and there is a small zippered pocket at one side to fit a key, cash, or otherwise small item. The arms are long and hit just above my elbow. This is nice for sun protection, and the fabric is sun-resistant as well (UPF 30). It is full zip which makes it easy to get on and off, and pairs well with bib shorts. Ive had no issues with the zipper and it doesnt seem to irritate my sensitive skin either. Pearl Izumi does advertise the jersey as having BioViz reflective details, but those are limited to the Pearl Izumi logo at the front and the words Pearl Izumi on the rear pocket. In terms of visibility, its not the worst, but certainly not the best. Bottom line: if youre willing to spend a bit of coin, this is one of the best road jerseys around. Its beautiful, soft, and fits like a glove. Womens Summit Short Sleeve JerseyPros:Breathable and airy on hot daysOffers sun protection (UPF 25)Variety of colors/prints including two-toneCons:Not as soft or as stink-free as MerinoNo pocketsPrice: $65 at PearlIzumi.com*The Pearl Izumi Summit jersey is a mountain bike style top that feels airy and unconstrained. It is highly breathable and comfortable on hot days.I took the jersey with me to Arizona for spring break, and the 80 degree days were quite the change from winter weather Id been riding in in Idaho. It was the correct choice for desert riding, because it kept me comfortably cool and offers sun protection (UPF 25).The material is thin and, if you hold it up to the light, you can see tons of tiny perforations. That said, it seems durable enough. Ive been wearing the jersey for a couple of months now and have yet to snag the material (something Im known for doing). The cut is relaxed but not baggy. The arms are cut at a medium length which is great from avoiding too much farmers tan, but are a little short if you wanted to wear elbow pads. I wore a size medium in the jersey and it was pretty spot on to the size chart and what Id normally order. (Im 5 5 and 125 lbs. Small boobs!)The top currently comes in five different colors/prints and some are one-tone (like the black) and some are two-tone (like the pink jersey I tested). Although, I am a black kinda girl, I liked the visual interest of the two colors and thought it looked really nice. My only complaint is that the polyester material isnt as soft or as comfortable as merino. Ive become pretty accustomed to wearing merino on the bike and its comfort level just cant be beat. The polyester is also stinkyer than merino, as I was reminded of on my Arizona trip. Finally, there are no jersey pockets (pretty typical for mountain bike style tees), so youll need to carry a hip pack or load up your bike with essentials. All in all, I though this was a great jersey for hot weather riding, and look forward to continuing to rock it throughout the summer months. Womens Attack Short Sleeve JerseyPros:Attractive, mid-range price pointPairs well with the Attack shorts or bibsWide range of colors and sizesPrice: $80 at PearlIzumi.com*Cons:Somewhat see-throughLike the Pearl Izumi Attack shorts, the Attack short sleeve jersey is an a well-made, mid-price option. This is the sort of bike wardrobe staple that we all need. If you have the Attack bibs, the two pair well together. The cut is form fit, but less so than the Pro jersey. It is not as tailored looking, but is slightly more forgiving. The fabric is soft and of good quality. The material is mid-weight and works well in warm, though not hot, temperatures. For summer riding, you might opt for the Attack Air jersey instead. I wore the Attack jersey on our warmer spring days, and it was perfect.Other features include a full zip (great for use with bibs), and three rear pockets (pretty standard). The waistband is moderately stretchy and uses silicone grippers to keep things in place. While I like the Ballerina pink (have you noticed I like pink yet?), it was quite see through. You could see both my sport bra and bib straps. I imagine that some of the other colors might be better in this regard.Beyond that, theres really nothing that makes the Attack jersey stand out (in either a positive or negative way). Its similar to pretty much every other mid-range road style jersey in my drawer. And thats okaywe all need a bunch of jerseys like this. Its affordable enough you can buy a couple of different colors and rotate them throughout the week, and well enough made that it will last a long time.More Stuff You Might Like10 Best Womens Padded Bike Shorts For CyclingCycling in the Heat: 9 Tips For Riding In High TempsEverything You Need To Know About Cycling HydrationAbout The AuthorKristen Bonkoski is the founder and owner of Femme Cyclist. An avid cyclist for a few decades now, she took to cycling during her late teen years a time when she needed something to help boost her self-esteem and confidence.Mission accomplished, the sport has become an important part of her life.
