- WWW.CYCLIST.CO.UKWhy you should love cyclocross tooCyclistWhy you should love cyclocross tooJanuary 1962 saw snow cover most of Britain, wiping out weekend sport fixtures. Faced with an empty schedule, the BBCs live Saturday sports round-up, Grandstand, took drastic action.Deprived of their usual fix of football, rugby or horse racing, viewers instead tuned in to hear commentator Peter West welcoming them to the first live transmission ever of cyclocross, adding, I think you will find it tremendous fun.The 40 minutes of action that followed, from a half-mile circuit in the shadow of Rugeley Power Station in the Midlands, were lauded as a great day for cycling by the magazine Cycling & Mopeds. While the much-publicised 100-a-week stars of football and the tough giants of professional rugby found the bitter conditions were too bad the gay cavaliers of cycling and cyclocross slithering in the snow looked like heroes, the report added.A few weeks later, the British Cyclocross Championships took place on the Tingley Gas Works Circuit near Leeds. While the footage from Rugeley Power Station has been lost to history, a wonderful, half-hour, full-colour film of the National Championships exists at the Yorkshire Film Archive and is definitely worth viewing online (its free to watch at yfanefa.com).This is the part that makes the knees go strange towards the top, says commentator CB Lockwood in a refined Yorkshire tone, before adding witheringly, Theres a chap who looks at the camera and comes a-cropper serves him right! The event, organised by Beryl Burtons club, Morley CC she is seen winning the womens race comfortably attracted 127 riders, including 18-year-old London wonder boy Keith Mernickle. He would later turn pro, being paid 100 a week by his sponsor, London jazz venue The 100 Club, and race against the likes of Eric De Vlaeminck, seven-time Cyclocross World Champion and brother of Roger. The Leeds event also played host to Coventry RC rider John Atkins, who went on to win the second of his 13 national titles, and the prize of a double bed-size Philips electric blanket.Look at the speed of Atkins through the mud. Theres no getting off with this chap, marvels Lockwood.Mud is the key word. Riders with more mud than blood in their veins look forward to sunny frosty mornings, icy starts, biting winds, water splashes and even snow, writes Ken Nichols in his history of British cyclocross, Mud, Sweat And Gears. But by the time of the 1962 Nationals, riders were despairing of the circuits.British organisers have always tended to overdo the rough stuff and there has often been little scope for bike-riding, said one rider at the time. Related Posts UCI Cyclocross World Championships 2026 preview A cycling phenomenon: Remembering Beryl Burton, Britains greatest rider The rise of cyclocross Cyclist magazine issue 171: on sale now Danny BirdAnd the British Cyclocross Association handbook for 1964 included this plea: It is hoped that organisers will promote events on fast rideable courses with not too much mud, etc, in an attempt to attract perhaps some of the independent and amateur roadmen. The clue is in the name. The Dutch word for cyclocross is veldrijden, which literally translates as field-riding. But it was a French army officer who pioneered the sport.Around 1900, most European armies included cycling battalions, and Daniel Gousseau believed riding across fields and other country terrain in the winter was perfect training. The idea caught on and in 1902 the first French National Cyclocross Championship took place a year before the first Tour de France. After winning the 1910 Tour, Octave Lapize said he had only been able to endure the challenges thanks to the cyclocross he had raced during the previous winter.Eugene Christophe, the first rider to wear the yellow jersey after it was introduced during the 1919 Tour, had previously won the French national CX title six years in a row.The UK cycling press was in awe of such achievements, with Cycling magazine reporting in 1931, French cyclists are a hardy breed. The professionals have their Tour de France, the most terrible endurance test of all sporting events in the world, while amateurs, not content with ordinary road racing, invent improvements such as the cross-cyclo in which competitors leave the road frequently in order to run across ploughed fields or ford rivers carrying their machines.British versions at the time often consisted of riders v runners races or rough stuff events such as the Bagshot Scramble, which in early 1950 saw 139 riders compete over a 13-mile course in front of 8,000 spectators.Describing a pile-up on a 45-degree slope, Cycling reported, Like sheep to the slaughter they plummeted down to disaster. Surprisingly, though, only two lost interest in the race; one with a wrecked front wheel and the other unconscious. Despite falls, knocks and cuts it was voted by all to be a great success especially for the trade repairers.Today, cyclocross continues its tradition of producing riders blessed with such all-round skills they excel both on and off the road. Following in the footsteps of Lapize, Christophe and the De Vlaemincks, the last few years have seen the likes of Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert and Tom Pidcock. But cyclocross is about much more than professional races and UCI points. At grassroots level it is one of the most accessible, inclusive and enjoyable disciplines of cycling.Throughout the winter, weekend CX events take place the length of Britain, attracting men, women, families and children to muddy circuits for an hour of high-intensity, high-adrenaline competition.Unlike with road racing, you dont need expensive aero equipment and you will burn off more cake doing an hour up and down slippery grassy banks than you will doing a steady three hours on tarmac. The downside is that your bike will accumulate several coatings of gunk in the process. But as BBC commentator Peter West announced to a TV audience on a snowy Saturday afternoon nearly 60 years ago, I think you will find it tremendous fun. This article first appeared in issue 94 of Cyclist magazine. The post Why you should love cyclocross too appeared first on Cyclist.0 Comments 0 Shares 485 Views

- WWW.CYCLIST.CO.UKBest aero handlebars for road bikes 2026CyclistBest aero handlebars for road bikes 2026If youre looking to make your bike a little more aero, a set of aero handlebars could help lower your wind resistance.Aero handlebars will have a reduced frontal profile and a wing-like shape, so theres less to cut through the air and airflow should be smoother. Theyre a key feature of the best aero road bikes, as theyre at the leading edge of the bike and so are first to encounter the air before it becomes turbulent further back on the bike.Aero bars will typically include cable integration, where brake hoses and (if you have them) gear cables run inside the bars. Many of the best road bikes also feature hidden or part-hidden cable runs through the stem and into the bikes head tube, again improving aerodynamics. Higher specs will often feature a one-piece bar/stem, which again helps to improve the bikes aerodynamics. If youre looking for a replacement set of aero handlebars, weve picked out the best below. Further down, we have a detailed guide to how to choose the best aero handlebars for you. Although that often means a one-piece cockpit, there are still two-piece designs, such as the bars on the Giant Propel, above, ridden by tech editor Sam Challis.Weve ridden countless kilometres on a range of aero handlebars and know what works and what may not be quite as comfortable and efficient, so were well positioned to recommend the best aero handlebars. While the latter has vertical drops, the alloy bars have a slight flare. They include wide tops for aero benefits and feature Dedas DCR system for full or semi-internal cable routing. The flare means that the measured width across the tops appears narrower than the carbon bars, but width in the drops is similar. Features include a textured surface to the unwrapped portion of the tops for grip and a step so that the end of the bar tape sits flush to the unwrapped central portion. Theres a slight forward sweep to the tops, which Roval claims improves knee clearance, although the elbows-out position it tends to promote may impact your aero tuck.Vision TriMax Carbon Aero Compact395 |Buy hereWidths available: 380mm, 400mm, 420mm, 440mmClaimed weight: From 255gReach: 80mmDrop: 125mmFlare: 2 degreesThe Vision TriMax Aero bars are available in both carbon and alloy, with the latter having a claimed 310g weight and a significantly lower pricetag. Theres a small flare and a shallow drop and the bars feature a cable groove. Theres a 10 degree forward angle to the tops, which are wide and aero profiled, offering a broad area which should reduce had pressure.Zipp SL 80 Race 340 |Buy hereWidths available: 360mm, 380mm, 400mm, 420mm, 440mmClaimed weight: 250g in 420mm widthReach: 80mmDrop: 125mmFlare: 2 degreesZipp has designed its SL 80 Race handlebars specifically for SRAMs latest generation AXS groupsets, with a shape that provides a smooth transition from the bars to the hoods. In addition, there are placements for Blips satellite shifters and grooves for hose routing on the bars underside and Zipp provides a heat-shrink sleeve for the tops for grip. Theres a 5 degree flare to the drops and an 8 degree forward sweep and a slight down sweep to the tops for hand comfort, as well as a wing shape to the bar tops, with Zipp selling narrower options for a more aerodynamic position. How do I choose the best aero bars for me?Here are a few things to consider when choosing an aerodynamic handlebar for your bike:Bar materialMany of the best aero handlebars are made of carbon, for its low weight and the capability to form complex shapes, as well as its capacity for vibration absorption. Not all are carbon, though, and you can save money, although at the expense of a little extra weight, by choosing alloy. An alloy bar is likely to be more robust too, so might be a better choice for harder use that involves a higher risk of crashing, such as crit racing.Bar geometryChoose a bar that suits you, is the right width and is comfortable. Many modern bars, but not all, have a flare to the drops which can help you get more aero, with your arms more tucked in, when riding on the hoods. Also make sure that youre comfortable with the depth of the bars from the hoods to the drops.Bar top shapeAero bars will have extended tops with an aero cross-section. Some are truncated, while others come to a sharper trailing edge. Make sure that the shape works for you, particularly if you have smaller hands, when a very broad top may not be easy to grip.Cable routingThere are multiple systems for internal routing of the cables and hoses. Aero bars typically route them through the inside of the bars or a groove on the underside. Most are compatible with a range of routing options into the bike frame, but some combinations of bars and stem/frame routing may not work together, so check compatibility before buying new aero handlebars.Combined bar/stemsMany modern bikes, at least in higher specs, have a one-piece bar/stem. It looks nice and is usually more aero, but if you go this route, again make sure its compatible with your frame. Youre tied into a bar reach and width, as well as bar shape too, so make sure youre comfortable with your choice. A replacement will be expensive if you get it wrong. PriceMany aero handlebars are made of carbon, so the price is often high. There are a couple of alloy options above though, which will work just as well if you want to save cash. - INRNG.COMPogacar and Ku CoinTadej Pogaar is the new Global Brand Ambassador of Ku Coin, a cryptocurrency exchange. Hes not the first or last athlete or celebrity to front for a crypto company. This company has been on European warning lists, fined in Canada and the US. Its also been in the news lately after being linked to a massive financial scandal in South-East Asia.Loyal readers may remember Pogaar was tipped to do more corporate and media work over the winter. The idea was he ought to be on cereal boxes, doing Gillette adverts but alas the source was only half-right given he seems to have settled for cryptocurrency. Nevermind the asset class because the specific choice of Ku Coin is worth exploring.Ku Coin is a big crypto trading platform founded in China and now run from the Seychelles. At one point it was ranked as the fourth biggest exchange by volume but has fallen down since. This means they might want a cheerful athlete with a big online following to promote them. And there is some good news to share as Ku Coin has become an approved business in Austria and in turn obtained a passport to operate across Europe. So it is a legitimate business in Europe. Only you can tell theres a big but comingFor years Ku Coin has been on warning lists after trying to operate in Europe without approval (here, here). It was also banned and fined in Ontario, Canada. It foolishly tried this in US which led to the US issuing arrest warrants for two of its founders. This lead to the company pleading guilty and paying $297 million in fines. Heres former US attorney Danielle Sassoon:For years, KuCoin avoided implementing required anti-money laundering policies designed to identify criminal actors and prevent illicit transactions. As a result, KuCoin was used to facilitate billions of dollars worth of suspicious transactions and to transmit potentially criminal proceeds, including proceeds from darknet markets and malware, ransomware, and fraud schemes Press release, US Attorneys Office, New York , 27 January 2025So far this doesnt sound like a great company to associate with. Only things look worse a year later. Alarm bells rang last autumn when investigative reporting website Project Brazen featured Ku Coin and its Thai subsidiary. If you have any spare time the full article is really worth reading and is free if you sign up, to the point that youre better off quitting this blog post to go read it.It alleges a transnational pig butchering scam involving human trafficking, torture, forced detention with tentacles reaching into several countries, notably Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar linked to Chinese-born Cambodian resident Chen Zhi and Prince Group, a company he chaired.A month after Brazens first article appeared the US Department of Justice moved to seize $15 billion in crypto assets, the largest ever seizure by a law agency apparently. The Chinese government objected to this, accusing the US of looting the funds. The US and UK have sanctioned Prince Group and Chen. Thai police issued arrest warrants for 42 people. The Thai deputy finance minister has resigned in order to clear his name. There have been shockwaves in Cambodia too with Chen reportedly being stripped of Cambodian citizenship by royal decree.Things have not stopped there. If China objected to the US seizing the money, it has gone after Chen and recently extradited him from Cambodia. As the photo above shows he got conspicuous treatment on arrival which suggests Chen may not be enjoying full innocent-before-proven-guilty status. As it happens Chinese news agency Xinhua announced today that 11 people were executed for conducting an online scam operation in Myanmar after being extradited to China. If this is all getting a long way from Tadej Pogaar, this is where Ku Coin apparently comes in. The proceeds of the Chen Zhis alleged crimes needed to be laundered. Project Brazen writes fronts for KuCoin illegally took stakes in Finansia, secretly integrating a crypto exchange with the banking sector a channel to move stolen crypto into the banking system without oversight. Again its worth reading the full allegations for context. Finansia X has since rejected the claims and says it will sue.The crucial point for a cycling blog is the allegation that Ku Coin was involved in criminal conspiracy to launder money from crime. Unlike past lapses where it might not have asked many questions about where client money was coming from, this time the claim is that it was actively conspiring which would be a serious crime. But for now weve read the allegations and theyre just that. We can give Ku Coins business in Thailand the right of being innocent as no court of law has found against it. But these stories are hot right now and it would be prudent for Pogaar and his entourage to have held off.ConclusionYou can easily make the case that Tadej Pogaar is one of the worlds best athletes. Plus he enjoys a wholesome reputation, a cherubic look at races and a cheerful presence on social media. Good luck finding someone who knows him to say a bad word. He ought to be the face of Kelloggs cereal, Gillette razors, Pepsi Cola or Visa cards. Maybe all of them at the same time. Crypto? Meh, but why not. But Ku Coin?Pogaar cant be expected to spend his winter reading the Bangkok newspapers nor cross-checking US Department of Justice press releases and Dutch regulatory filings. But he pays people do do this for him. Whoever negotiated this deal on his behalf and presumably collected the announcement fee ought to have sat down in front of a search engine to read about Ku Coin as it looks risky to endorse the company right now. Yes its been approved for business in Europe now but has a history of rule-breaking and fines and this alone seems a poor match for Pogaar. But right now it is linked to a serious ongoing scandal. Ku Coin needs Tadej Pogaar a lot more than he needs them. The post Pogacar and Ku Coin first appeared on The Inner Ring.0 Comments 0 Shares 721 Views
- WWW.CYCLIST.CO.UKPro team history: SoloCyclistPro team history: SoloBy the mid-1960s there was little that Classics supremo Rik Van Looy hadnt achieved in cycling. The Emperor of Herentals had been in the professional ranks for more than a decade and had enjoyed a remarkable career, winning all five Monuments and claiming a couple of rainbow jerseys as well as multiple stage wins at each of the Tour de France, Giro dItalia and Vuelta a Espaa.Van Looy had ridden for a variety of teams during that time, most notably the leading Faema outfit between 1956 to 1962, during which he took the bulk of his major one-day wins. And while he may now have been closer to the end of his career than the start, he remained one of the sports biggest names. So when he signed to the Solo-Superia team for 1964, team management would have been confident they were getting a born winner, someone who could surely bring them victories in the very biggest of one-day races, something that had been missing over the previous three years of the teams existence. Meanwhile Van Looy, who had spent the past year riding for, in the words of Ren de Latour, the modest Libertas bike firm, would have hoped to add to his already impressive Monument haul.As it turned out, Van Looys first year in the red jersey of Solo-Superia was a little leaner than both he and the team would have hoped. His best results were a handful of victories, including Harelbeke (the E3 Saxo Classic today) and the Tour of Luxembourg, along with top five placings at Paris-Tours, Milan-San Remo and Gent-Wevelgem a decent return for many riders but an average season for a rider of Van Looys pedigree. Related Posts Cyclist Magazine Podcast: The legend of Eddy Merckx, with Lee Donaldson Pro team history: Bianchi Pro team history: Kas Pro team history: Carpano Before 1964 Van Looy had ridden a large number of six-day events alongside Rik Van Steenbergen. Going into 1965 a different approach was called for and Van Looy sacrificed much of the lucrative winter track season to focus preparations on the upcoming road season. The decision paid off. In February he won five of six stages and the overall at the Giro di Sardegna in a race dominated by Solo-Superia.The Belgian is in better form than hes perhaps ever been in his long career, wrote Gigi Boccacini after the penultimate stage. A successful defence of his Harelbeke title followed the following month.Nevertheless, as Van Looys attention turned to Paris-Roubaix, not all observers were convinced that he was back to his old self, questioning whether he could still compete in the most prestigious races.Tomorrow, Van Looy will ride an important race, full of uncertainty, ran a preview in Lquipe. In Roubaix we will finally know if he still deserves the title of Emperor, or if, on the contrary, he is sliding down the slope of decline, as Nol For and Willy Vannitsen, his sworn enemies, have been asserting for two years now.Rik Van Looy leads the Vuelta in 1965. Having just won Paris-Roubaix, he took eight stage wins to silence those who believed he was in decline.Offside / L'EquipeThe Emperor strikes backAccording to Pierre Chany, Van Looys move to Solo-Superia at least meant he was again surrounded by a solid team men who know how to thin out a peloton, to organise an echelon in a few seconds and to spare no effort to facilitate their leaders moves. So it would prove on the road to Roubaix. In a race that only featured some 22km of cobbled roads, Van Looy was in the leading group of 11 alongside his Solo-Superia teammate Edward Ward Sels as the race climaxed. When Rolf Wolfshohl attacked, Sels marked the move, enabling Van Looy to come back to the front. Then, with 10km to go, Van Looy made his move. For five kilometres he saw his eight companions lose ground, at first imperceptibly, then very noticeably, Chany later quoted from Lquipes race report. The fruit was ripe; all it took was the shaking of the tree for it to fall.Van Looys winning margin over Sels was a little over a minute. He called it the most beautiful win of his career. If I had failed in my attempt, Ward Sels would have counter-attacked, Van Looy said afterwards. Honestly, he would have won Paris-Roubaix then. Lets just say I was the lucky one.The reign of the Emperor is not yet over, reported Dutch daily Leidsch Dagblad. A little over two weeks later Van Looy was at the Vuelta where he won eight of 18 stages and the points classification. At the Tour he won the opening stage from Cologne to Lige. It was the first time Van Looy had claimed the famous leaders jersey. It was not however the first yellow jersey for the team, Sels having won the Tours first stage the previous year. Both would wear the jersey for two days.Van Looys Paris-Roubaix victory was the first Monument that Solo-Superia had claimed since its inception as Solo-Van Steenbergen in 1961. Solo was a brand of margarine and, as the name suggests, Rik Van Steenbergen three-time World Champion and five-time Monument winner was the outfits major name. He was in the twilight of his career, so instead it was Jos Wouters, signed in late 1961 after he had won Paris-Tours as an independent, who would claim the teams first major one-day Classic in 1962.Wouters was supremely talented and tipped as a future Monument winner for the team. Dubbed a second Van Looy, and with a large contract, Wouters managed top five finishes in Flanders and Lige-Bastogne-Lige during his time with Solo. Sadly a series of crashes ultimately forced retirement from the sport when he was just 23.In his short career he had won 43 races, reads his short bio in the book Top 1,000 Belgian Cyclists. He suffered and had to look away when he saw riders training.Instead it would be another young rider who signed his first professional contract with the team and would go on to superstardom.Top MerckxEddy Merckx had won the amateur Worlds in 1964 and in late April 1965 signed for Solo-Superia. He made his pro debut in La Flche Wallonne but abandoned. Nevertheless it wouldnt be long before the man who would become known as The Cannibal tasted success, winning the GP Stad Vilvoorde, where he outsprinted Emile Daems. A second win came in Omloop van het Houtland Torhout but Merckx would soon grow disillusioned with the team, which at the time was very much Van Looys. In the biography Eddy Merckx: The Cannibal, Daniel Friebe writes that Merckx faced incessant mockery.Van Looys speciality, on a par with his sprinting, was his sarcasm. Whether it was Merckxs fondness for rice pudding or his meek ripostes to the put-downs, everything he did was ripe for ridicule.Merckx left for Peugeot at the end of the season, winning Milan-San Remo just three months later. The 1966 season would be Solo-Superias swansong, although before they folded they claimed one more Monument. At Flanders, amid continuous rain that caused numerous crashes and ensured only 59 of the 151 starters reached the finish, Sels emerged from the sprint to claim what would turn out to be the teams final Classics win.The post Pro team history: Solo appeared first on Cyclist.0 Comments 0 Shares 575 Views
