Dual speeding and red light camera system to go live at busy Dublin junction
Cameras will also be installed around Ireland, starting with Co Kerry and Co Roscommon.A decade after a red light camera trial at a Luas level crossing where motorists kept running into trams, Dublins first normal-operating red light camera is to be placed at a different type of level crossing the Dart and Intercity railway level crossing at Merrion Gates. The recently reported delay in another planned rollout of red light cameras means Irish Rail trains will be protected ahead of Luas trams. The delay in deploying enforcement camera systems away from railways is linked to the publication of a draft strategy for broader camera-based enforcement. Despite a draft of the strategy being presented to the Department of Transport in May 2024 and it not being finalised since, the Department told this website that it was an absolute priority of the Ministers, the Department and Government to see a reduction in the number of deaths on our roads. Irish Rail said today that cameras, installed in partnership with An Garda Sochna and Dublin City Council, have been tested extensively in recent months and will go live soon. The State railway company said that the system will detect motorists going beyond a stop line when red lights are flashing at a Railway Level Crossing, which is subject to a fine of 80 and two penalty points, while it will also detect speeding offences, which come with a fine of 160 and two penalty pointsThe system, like other fixed speed enforcement cameras, will be operated by Go Safe for the Garda. The company reported 23 incidents in 2025 and 28 in 2024 in which road vehicles or bikes crashed into level crossing gates. Blocking the level crossing and speeding can also prevent Irish Rail from lowering the gates to allow trains to pass, causing disruption to the rail network.Mary Considine, CEO of Irish Rail. said: Interface between road and rail users at level crossings represents one of the greatest safety risks on the railway. The installation of Garda Go safe cameras, firstly here at Merrion Gates and at other level crossings across the country, to encourage drivers to always act safely at level crossings.Assistant Garda Commissioner Catharina Gunne, who has the responsibility for roads policing, said: We welcome this next stage of co-operation with our partners in transport safety. The effective use of this kind of technology will greatly help us to keep rail and road users safe through enforcement. She added: But we still appeal to people to take care when approaching a railway level crossing, to be aware of other road users and to pay heed to the warning lights indicating that it is unsafe for you to proceed, and require you to stop so as to avoid any risk to you or the safety of others. The Dublin City Lord Mayor, Cllr Ray McAdam, said: Dublin City Council are pleased to support this initiative and look forward to seeing more of this type of technology rolled out across the city to ensure all users obey the traffic signals, which are installed to assist all road users and pedestrians. In a statement, Irish Rail said that the camera is the first of up to six camera units which will be used across a range of level crossings, and some of the cameras may be moved around to different locations in Dublin. The company said that the next planned rollout locations are in Farranfore and Minish in County Kerry, and Knockcroghery in County Roscommon, where it outlined that speeding is the primary issue.Irish Rail said: The cameras are easy to relocate, and they will be deployed dependent on driver behaviour. Merrion was chosen as the first location due to traffic surveys showing persistent driver behaviour issues. Where these safety cameras have been deployed across the roads network, driver compliance of up to 98.6% is achieved. In Dublin, it is intended to move units across the network to automated crossings such as Serpentine, Sutton, Coolmine and Sandymount where incidents have been recorded.

Alpkit lands new investment and says jobs secure after entering administration
Alpkit has officially announced its new financial restructure and investment that secures almost 200 jobs after it was revealed yesterday that the outdoors company had entered administration. The Nottinghamshire-based company, which also owns Sonder bikes, said the last three years have been tough financially. It faced rapid cost inflation, a challenging retail environment and trade barriers while servicing post-pandemic recovery loans. Our Board has worked extensively over recent months to explore options and find a way to secure our future, Alpkit said in a statement released today. This has resulted in Alpkit securing new investment via a pre-pack process. This process meant Alpkit briefly went into administration so that the company could be purchased by our new investor. The investment secures all 194 jobs across Alpkits retail, warehouse, manufacturing and central teams. Alpkit will continue to be led by its existing team with its incoming investor Jeroen van den Berge joining as a non-executive chair to support the company. Alpkit CEO and co-founder David Hanney said: While today is a day of reflection on the challenges that led to this restructure and we deeply regret the impact on our creditors, partners and shareholders it is also the start of a vital new chapter. Under new ownership, Alpkit becomes a well-funded, more resilient business. We are keeping our team together and our purpose unchanged: to help people Go Nice Places, Do Good Things. Van den Berge said: What excites me about Alpkit is the strong heritage and values, leading product credentials, direct-to-consumer model and loyal membership base. I also share the teams vision of Alpkit becoming a home to other complementary brands, similar to what was achieved with Trakke. I look forward to supporting David and the team during the next phase of their exciting journey. Alpkits statement today confirmed existing shareholders have lost the value of their shares, and that they will be offered a stake in the new company.
