- UKGRAVELCO.COMBrooks England Cambium C17 Saddle ReviewBrooks England C17 carvedBrooks saddles have always scared me. Tales of having to do long rides to break in the leather top, the spanner that came with them to adjust the spring underneath to stretch or relieve the pressure on that top and the well, lets face it, the retro bygone era look of the things all contribute to asthetically make me not want to go near one with my tender under parts!Well Grandad I hear you say (and probably Brooks reading that paragraph) things have moved on. Brooks have evolved and moved with the times. They do of course still produce those hand made leather saddles and I concede that once the breaking in period has passed and the saddle has molded itself to your undercarriage they are probably the comfiest saddle out there. However, who in the modern world has time to go through all that discomfort? I have to hold down a day job and also have the every day humdrum chores that we all do so my riding window is small and I need to make the most of it by jumping on the bike and go riding. The Brooks Cambium range of saddles is their solution to those of us without the time to break in new parts (or break our own doing it) and shock horror it isnt even made of leather!!! No the Cambium has a vulcanised rubber cover so no worries about water damage or having to treat the material to protect it. Wash and go at the same time as you clean the bike. It has tubular steel rails and aluminium rivets.Brooks C17 carved weather proofBrooks C17 carved railsYes rivets, you see Brooks havent abandonned the traditions completely. The saddle is still designed to have the hammock effect of the original saddle, the top is still riveted together but with anodised aluminium rather than copper rivets and it even has a traditional twin fitting for a saddle bag, such as Brookss own or something like a carradice waxed cotton one. Lets not stray too far into the past though, as sunlit and glorious in a rough stuff fellowship kind of way it might be. Make no mistake the Cambium is a well thought out modern saddle that has been designed for commuting, road riding, world travel, gravel biking & bikepacking in all weather conditions. Brooks C17 carved comfort cut outBrooks C17 carvedThe 17 part of the name represents the width, Brooks produce a 15 and a 19 in these and their other saddles. I went with 17 as it was closest to the width of saddle Im most used to. I received a carved version which means there is a cut out in the middle designed to add pressure relief and more flex for long hours in the saddle. The rails will fit any modern seatpost and theres is no tension adjustment for the top.The ride then does not match what my preconceived ideas forecast. To my eyes it looks uncomfortable and hard. This though is as far from the truth as its possible to get! The saddle feels like you are easing into your favourite armchair. The first few rides I found the flex a little disconcerting and I thought I could feel the cut out move and close together a little as i sat down but I think this was entirely psychosomatic as it didnt interfere with any of my delicate parts at all. I didnt find this flex affected the ride though, theres no bouncing pogo stick like over rough ground but I could tell the difference from my regular saddle. The ride wasnt as harsh, its no substitute for a suspension seatpost (or full suspension bike) by any means but it does help with that trail chatter and that has got to help with fatigue over a long ride.Brooks C17 carved rivetsBrooks C17 carved saddle bag mountIve used this saddle over the summer and now into the wet autumn..who am I kidding, the summer was nearly as wet! The rubber saddle cover has proved durable and actually doesnt look like its been used at all! It shrugs off water and a quick wash with a sponge or hose cleans off any residual mud or grit completely. After multiple rides the only thing I think Id change if I was to buy one of these saddles is to go with the narrower C15. This is because Ive mostly been using the saddle on a bike with a standard seatpost, not a dropper post so going downhill Ive had to get my weight and myself behind the saddle in the old fashioned way and the slightly wider rear of the saddle has made this a process Ive had to concentrate more on than if it was narrower. The fact that this method of riding with a rigid post is the only old fashioned thing about the saddle is not lost on me given my first two paragraphs. I think Id go with one of the colours too, black is rather too traditional! The Brooks England C17 saddle, there for the long haul rides with armchair comfort and lasting looksyou can find out more details from Brooks England (not an affiliate link)**if youd like to support these reviews and ukgravelco.com then please consider following this page, the instagram channel, subscribing to the youtube channel all of which are free to do or buying something from the ukgravelco shop, links belowhttps://www.instagram.com/ukgravelco/https://www.youtube.com/@ukgravelcohttps://ukgravelco.bigcartel.com/0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 464 مشاهدة

- TDAGLOBALCYCLING.COMA Dutch Rider Takes on the Trans-Europa Cycling TourUPDATED October 20, 2024BY Shanny HillINTrans-Europa no comments A Dutch Rider Takes on the Trans-Europa Cycling TourFor us, born in the early sixties, it was a not possible to go to the east part of Europe during the Cold War. So now we want to see also that part of Europe.Herman Sans has participated in many of our tours around the world from South America and North America to the Journey to the East in Korea and Japan and is currently cycling in Italy on the Viva Italia. Last year Herman and his wife Ada decided on a big adventure closer to home crossing all of Europe from the northeast to the southwest on the Trans-Europa. You might recall we wrote about this Crazy European Diagonal in the spring when we had a chat with Frenchman, Stphane Lancereau. We recently asked Herman to think back to his Trans-Europa ride and share some highlights and the reason why he chose this tour in Europe, just as Stphane had. Heres what he had to say:The start in the Baltic states was very nice. Cycling was not to hilly and most of the route was on very calm roads. People were quiet but friendly. And a lot of them spoke English. Herman went on to say that Poland appeared a little more poor than the first 3 countries and much more Catholic but that the big cities were modern and Warsaw, especially, was a worthwhile rest day.His ride continued south and after some hilly cycling, we came to Slovakia. It was another modern country with very friendly people. Then came Hungary. Herman marvelled about Budapest where it became another world, very modern and fancy cars. Budapest was a very nice city with its walkable centre. Especially the old bridge.Herman in the BalticsI asked Herman the inevitable question what was the best part? Concerning cycling, I think Slovenia was the most beautiful country. Nice roads and great natureeverything was clean. Also the city of Ljubljana was not too big but very friendly. After Slovenia, the Trans-Europa drops out of the mountains into Italy and reached the iconic city of Venice. Venice was, of course, something that you have to see but for us it was not the most important. Food and coffee and wine were of course very good. After that, the route follows the sunny coast of the Mediterranean of Italy and then France, and as Herman remarked, France was France. Nice weather and the great Mediterranean life. Then the group entered Spain and followed the Costa Brava. After that we cycled along the coast in the direction of Barcelona. Its a very big city but easy to enter using the wonderful cycling lanes. It has a very beautiful centre and great food. The part between Barcelona and Valencia is mostly along the coast but sometimes busy. After Valencia, we entered the interior of Spain, away from the coast. This was very very nice. In spite of having a lot of climbing and sometimes having very hot weather, the nature was breathtaking.Herman summed up his Trans-Europa tour like this We think that the nicest part for cycling was Slovenia and the part in Spain after Valencia. The best espresso was in Italy. The best bread in France. The nicest people in the Baltic states.Hermans advice to you whether you live in Europe or anywhere else? It is a tour for everyone all over the world but take on the whole tour, not just a part of it. Then you have time to get in good shape for some of the hard days. It is a TDA tour .Please enjoy this video overview and consider reaching out to us with any questions. Spaces are open for the 2025 tour (it starts in July) if you want to join, perhaps for a week or maybe to tackle the tour in its entirety.Bike the BalticThe adventure begins in Tallinn with riders heading south through lush forests and along the Baltic coastline before stopping in historic Riga and its beautiful waterfront promenade.Amber RouteCyclists depart Vilnius' historic centre and pedal through rural landscapes, stopping in the cities of Warsaw and Koice before climbing into the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains.Alps & AdriaticFrom Budapest the riders cycle along beautiful Lake Balaton and enter hilly Slovenia. The route takes them past Roman ruins and into Italy where they eventually reach VeniceAlong the RivieraLeaving Venice, the group returns to the mainland, cycling through small Italian towns and where they face challenging winding roads as they enjoy the views of the Mediterranean.Provence / Costa BravaContinuing along the coastline spinning between olive groves, the riders reach the sundrenched Costa Brava with its renowned beaches and rocky cliffs.El ToroFrom Barcelona the riders head into the rolling hills of southern Spain, dotted with olive and orange trees. They cycle through historic Granada and eventually to the Rock of Gibraltar.A special thanks to videographer Ethan Weil who travelled with the cyclists in 2023 and created this video series for us.RELATEDTOURTrans-EuropaJoin us on this spectacular 2 1/2 month cycling adventure across Europe.
