5 standout Tour of Britain moments from the last ten years
Cyclist5 standout Tour of Britain moments from the last ten yearsThe 2024 Tour of Britain will run from Tuesday 3rd September to Sunday 8th September, taking in the sights of the Scottish Borders, heading down to Sheffield and finishing in Felixstowe. The race has had plenty of memorable moments over the years with some brilliant riders winning stages, classifications and launching themselves on lengthy breakaways. We look back at the past decade to relive some of the best moments.2014: Marcel Kittel shines on debutPaul Ellis/AFP via Getty ImagesArriving at the 2014 Tour of Britain having won four stages at the Tour de France, Marcel Kittel bookended the race with wins in Liverpool and London. On the opening day he powered away in the sprint finish with rival Mark Cavendish in third, who had crashed into a car earlier in the race. The final day was a rarely seen split stage; an 8.8km individual time-trial preceded an 88.8km ride around a London circuit. After Bradley Wiggins topped the ITT standings, Kittel would win by mere inches ahead of Cavendish.2016: A classic Ian Stannard breakawayTim De Waele/Corbis via Getty ImagesThe year is 2016 and Ian Stannard was at the Tour of Britain after helping Chris Froome to another Tour de France victory. At the start of Stage 3, a 179.4km day from Congleton to Tatton Park, his teammates Ben Swift and Nicolas Roche were in the top ten on GC. Stannard worked his way into the days breakaway, sticking out like a sore thumb alongside the Continental riders that normally make up the Tour of Britains breaks. It was in the final 41km that he launched a scathing solo attack and dropped them all. He stayed away until the finish, celebrating in front of hundreds of cheering fans in Cheshire. This was also another edition of the Tour of Britain that featured a split stage stages 7a and 7b on the penultimate day. But 2016 was difference, as for the first time in a decade, there was no repeat stage winner.2019: Mathieu van der Poel dominates2019 was a season in which Mathieu van der Poel truly announced himself on the road stage with Corendon-Circus, bolstered by wins at Dwars door Vlaanderen, Brabantse Pijl and the Amstel Gold Race. At the Tour of Britain he came close to victory on Stage 3, narrowly beaten by Jumbo-Vismas Dylan Groenewegen. But he wouldnt make that mistake again. On Stage 4, as the three-man breakaway were caught in the last kilometre Van der Poel launched a stinging attack from the back of the main group to win the uphill sprint in Kendal after a tough day. After losing the lead to Matteo Trentin on Stage five on bonus seconds, he rectified the situation the next day before going back-to-back on the last two stages of the race. It was an almighty battle between leader Van der Poel and second place Trentin on a hilly Stage 7, but the Dutchman outclimbed the Italian to Burton Dassett Trentin holding his hand up in defeat for ten bonus seconds. In the final kilometres of Stage 8, Mitchelton-Scott swarmed on the front but Van der Poel was right behind. It was a tight finish between Van der Poel, Trentin and Cees Bol of Sunweb, but Van der Poel narrowly edged them both out for his third stage victory and the overall win by 17secs ahead of Trentin.2021: Jacob Scotts breakaway brillianceHarry Trump/Getty ImagesThe Continental teams dont just ride in breakaways for the hell of it. The Tour of Britains parcours means winning classifications is a real possibility. In the past decade, 12 riders from British and Irish-based Continental teams have won a points, sprints or mountains classification. One of the most successful was Jacob Scott. In 2021, Canyon-Dhb-SunGods Scott secured both the mountains and sprints classifications as well as the overall combativity award for his efforts across the eight-stage race.He topped the sprints and mountains standings (the latter he previously won in 2019) after making the breakaway on the opening stage and never relented, continuing to make breakaways and sweep up points. It was unsurprising that he took home the overall combativity award too.Scott dominated and by the end of the race, won the mountains jersey by 34 points and the sprints jersey by 12. It was a memorable opening day in Manchester as 21-year-old Olav Kooij led home a 1-2 for the squad with teammate Van Aert finishing second just behind.Kooij impressed and then some. He won a further three stages on the bounce and topped the standings throughout his four-day tirade, only relinquishing the lead after Stage 5, which was won by Van Aert, who took the leaders jersey.Van Aert went on to win the Tour of Britain for a second time, beating Uno-Xs Tobias Halland Johannessen by 3secs.What couldve beenOli Scarff/AFP via Getty Images2022 was shaping up to be a close edition of the Tour of Britain. After Stage 5, Movistars Gonzalo Serrano led the standings by just 3secs from Tom Pidcock. The top five on GC all sat within 10secs of one another.Despite the race being scheduled to head south and finish on the Isle of Wight, the final three stages were ultimately cancelled due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.Pidcock will be back on the start line this year though, alongside strong challenges from Remco Evenepoel and Julian Alaphilippe. For more on the race, including the route, how to watch and the favourites, visit our Tour of Britain hub page. North Strand Road reverts to two-way traffic this Sunday as Clontarf Route project progresses
Cycle route and footpaths are still undergoing heavy work in some locations, with people cycling diverted to the bus lane or general traffic lane. Dublin City Council has confirmed that the roadway between Fairview and the Five Lamps including Annesley Bridge Road and North Strand Road will be made two-way again from this Sunday evening, September 1st. As this website reported in May, the finishing date for the Clontarf to City Centre bus and cycle route project has been deleted to at least Q3 2024, with some localised snag work continuing after that. The cycle path and footpaths and some other works, including junctions, are still being constructed and people cycling are still be diverted to the roadway on large sections of the outbound part of the road. The ongoing work includes work on sections of the roadway and junctions, and in some cases, roads will still only be temporally marked. Cllr Donna Cooney (Green Party) said: Im glad the project is progressing well, and contrary to much misinformation circulating, the diversion was not permanent, even though the reopening of the road to private cars through North Strand was delayed due to unexpected extra work. She added: Residents and all commuters are now really beginning to see the benefits of the even though project as it nears completionOfficials emailed councillors with an update confirming the change, which they referred to as an important milestone for the project. The email to councillors said: The current diversion of inbound traffic from Edge`s Corner (Fairview Strand), via Ballybough and Portland Row has been a vitally important element to facilitate the completion of the C2CC Scheme along North Strand Road. Works on the outbound side of North Strand Road have progressed considerably in recent months. On Sunday evening, 1st September, the inbound general traffic lane between Edge`s Corner (Fairview Strand) and Five Lamps junction shall be made available again, i.e. inbound general traffic along Annesley Bridge Road and North Strand Road shall be permitted, the council official said. The email update said that electronic road signs are being erected along the route, and notices will be posted on social media in advance telling commuters and local road users that the diversion is to be removed from Sunday. The update from the project team added: It is noted that for the next number of months off-peak works (mid-week, evenings and weekends), positioned in the road and the cycle-track shall still be required in order to complete remaining junction installations, snagging works etc.

Pinarello focus: Billy Bilsland Cycles, Glasgow
CyclistPinarello focus: Billy Bilsland Cycles, GlasgowBilly Bilsland Cycles is a Glasgow cycling institution. Opened in 1980 by the father of current owner Neil Bilsland, the family-run business has been at the heart of Scotlands racing and riding scene for decades. It gives back to the community it helped create and a visit has to be at the top of any cycling sightseers must-do list if only for the infectious enthusiasm Neil has for the world he was born into.Local heroesI started working here as a youngster in the early 1990s, Neil says. Child labour laws dont apply to family businesses or so my father tells me! This shop is pretty much all Ive known. Its history is all over its walls, from Philippa Yorks polka dot jersey, a Peugeot bike from the same era, Katie Archibalds rainbow jersey, Neah Evans national champions jersey and even going back to my grandfather Arthur Campbells time. He was president of the Scottish Cyclists Union and the British Federation.Theres a poster on the wall from the 1980 Worlds, with his head popping out of the commissaires car; we have his commissaire badges going back to Fausto Coppi winning in 1953. There are generations of cycling represented in the shop; its a shame Im a better retailer than Id ever be a rider. At your serviceBeing family-run and independent means when you come in you deal with the owner, Neil says. Were all here because we love speaking to customers, helping and following them in their cycling journey whether its their first commuter bike or, in a few years time, their race bike.Weve been dealing with some of our customers for 20 years. If its got two wheels, well fix it. And bike-fits have become a much bigger part of what we do. Because almost every bikes front end is proprietary, the shop that sells you the bike is going to be the best shop to fit you, because theyll have the correct bars, the correct stem and the experience of that kind of system.A global familyFor the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Malawian team brought their bikes in for a service, Neil says. The bikes were OK but we ended up lending them two bikes for the road race and one of the staff members time-trial bikes for the TT. Theres a Scotland-Malawi partnership now. For the World Championships in August last year, a Malawi rider came across for three weeks with just a rucksack. So we provided bikes, transfers I even did his washing for him! Also during the Worlds, we had the only athlete representing Vatican City come to the shop. In the morning, we were sorting out the Malawi team, then in the afternoon, we worked on that guys bike. It was a Pinarello but it needed the gearing sorted.Great escapeWe are pretty much smack bang in the city centre, but Glasgow Green, one of the biggest parks in Glasgow, is adjacent to the shop. From there, the National Cycle Network gives you options in every direction north, south, east and west.To get out of the city by bike to nice, roadie roads is only about 5km in any direction. North of the city is the Campsie Fells and the Carron Valley, including two classic climbs: the Crow Road and the Tak-Ma-Doon. Youre never very far from a good climb. The Italian connectionPinarello has been fantastic for the shop, Neil says. So good in fact that it makes me slap myself in the forehead and ask why I havent been selling Pinarello bikes for 15 years. Weve talked about the history of the shop, but Pinarellos own history in cycling is unmatched. I grew up watching Miguel Indurin winning the Tour de France, then we had the dominance of Team Sky.And obviously Pinarellos bikes are amazing. The X Series, for example, just fits people so well. Whether youre as short as 4ft 11in or as tall as 6ft 5in, theres a Pinarello that will fit you.
