Armitage On Form Making Olympic Debut
Megan Armitage disappointed as crash hampered her overall finish in Womens Road RaceRoad cycling events at Paris 2024 came to a close today, Sunday 4th of August, with the Womens Road Race. Offalys Megan Armitage was the sole representative for Team Ireland. 2024 marked the first time in over 20 years that Ireland has been represented in this event.Making her Olympic debut, Armitage finished 35th in gruelling 158km race, and would have placed much higher if she hadnt been hampered with 48km to go.The Shinrone rider was right up at the head of the peloton, throwing in attacks amidst legends like Netherlands Marianne Vos, when the race re-entered the city with 50km to go but then a rider went down in front of Armitage on a tight corner on the cobbles of Montmarte, forcing her to stop. Detached from the leaders as the race went into its critical criterium stage, with some tough climbs, she just couldnt make it back up.It is a measure of how good the 27-year-old was feeling at the time that she was disappointed with her placing:I was well positioned going into the circuits but, just as I entered the first climb there was a crash, and I got stuck behind it. I needed to be quicker to get back up to the front group then, but the group I was in had teammates in the break at that point and werent co-operating.In the final 2km I went with another girl and still felt really good, Armitage added.Im happy with how I approached the race, just disappointed with the result. It was an incredible experience. I never expected to be here. I could almost hear my family calling my name every time on the circuit, there were so many Irish there!I had bad luck, being behind the crash and not in front of it. These things happen, but before that, I rode a really good race. Its the best Ive ever felt in a race, just not the result I hoped for.Armitages dramatic rise from cycling socially during lockdown to a professional career within four years, is already a remarkable one and her brave attacking performance today underlined her potential. The team of Lara Gillespie, Kelly Murphy, Alice Sharpe and Mia Griffin will take to the track on Tuesday, 6th of August, for the qualifying round in the Womens Team Pursuit.Picture by Zac Williams/SWpix.com Full ResultsThe post Armitage On Form Making Olympic Debut appeared first on IrishCyclingNews.com | Irish Cycling News | IrishCycling.

Ryan Mullen and Ben Healy shine in the Mens Road Race at the 2024 Paris Olympics
Following the excitement of last weekend when Ryan Mullen made history to become the highest placed Irish finisher in the Mens Time Trial. All eyes returned to the streets of Paris for the Mens Road Race today, Saturday 3rd of August.Joining Mullen, and fresh from a successful Tour de France, was Ben Healy who went on to record another historic finish, coming 10th in the Mens Road Race the highest place recorded by an Irish athlete in the race.Healy and Ryan combined to form an impressive attacking duo, showing not only great skill but also incredible teamwork. Just 70km in to the 272.1km race, Mullen went on the attack with three other riders, and bridged to the leaders who were eventually distanced by the power of the Irish rider.Healy counter attacked in typically forthright style from the main peloton alongside Alexiy Lutsenko with 92km remaining. After joining Mullen up front with 76km to go, who notably emptied the tank to put Healy in with a shout, Mullen dropped back 10km later, and Healy pressed on with the Kazak rider in tow.Healy was joined by a quality chase group and remained in a lead break of three inside the last 30km when eventual race winner Remco Evenepoel and silver medal winner Valentin Madouas pressed on.Absorbed by the chasers Healy still hung on with considerable grit an eight-rider group 1m16s down sprinting for the bronze medal at the Trocadero in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower on a memorable day for Irish cycling. After his breakaway heroics Ryan Mullen completed the race in 60th position, just under 16m 56s behind Evenepoel.Speaking afterwards Healy said:I did what I could and played my cards the best way I knew how to, which gave me the best opportunity of trying to go for a medal. Im super proud of the performance and the team. Ive got to be happy with that. Maybe if I had a little more in the tank I couldve been super close to a medal but top ten is something to be proud of.Full ResultsThe post Ryan Mullen and Ben Healy shine in the Mens Road Race at the 2024 Paris Olympics appeared first on IrishCyclingNews.com | Irish Cycling News | IrishCycling.
