Canyon Aeroad CFR 2024 in review A thoroughbred road bike
Canyons ultimate aero weapon the Aeroad CFR is getting a long-awaited update. Inspired by feedback from pro teams, Mathieu van der Poel himself, and the team mechanics, the new Aeroad is said to be faster, easier to maintain and more stable. But can one of the worlds best road bikes really get any better?Canyon Aeroad CFR | 9,999 | 7.2 kg in size M | Manufacturers websiteThe old Canyon Aeroad was already one of the fastest bikes in the peloton, and the latest version aims to build on that. The new Aeroad 2024 is not only faster and lighter but also officially cobble proven, in line with the wishes of the pros. This means it is designed for classics such as the Paris-Roubaix one-day race with its notorious cobblestone sections. Other changes include a higher stiffness-to-weight ratio and the annual increase in tire clearance. On the new Aeroad CFR, the tire clearance is 32 mm, following the wishes of world champion and Paris-Roubaix winner Mathieu van der Poel. Everyday features such as a rear light and the Gear Groove already familiar from the Canyon Grail have also found their way onto the Aeroad. Canyon thus combine professional performance with practical features for everyday use. Weve already had the chance to ride the new Canyon Aeroad extensively on Spains Costa Blanca and can tell you which changes we think are particularly promising.Focus on racing The new features of the Canyon Aeroad CFR 2024The focus on aerodynamics is already hinted at in the name of the Aeroad, but how have they evolved on the new 2024 model? At first glance not much, but look closer and youll see that nothing has really stayed the same. The latest Canyon Aeroad CFR has a thinner head tube and down tube. The transition between the seat stays and the seat tube has also been improved, as have the weight-optimised profiles at the rear. In practice, this means shallower tube profiles on the seat tube, seatpost and seat stays. And because every manufacturer is doing it right now, Canyon have also decided to cover the dropouts. This gives a clean look and, according to Canyon, provides minimal aero advantages.Sleek and sporty, the Canyon Aeroad CFR looks really fast with its slim front end and new Pace Bar cockpit.covered dropouts complete the look.Integrated seatpost clamp and Another significant development is hidden in the cockpit. The Koblenz-based company continues to rely on its proprietary system for clamping the steerer tube and adjusting the handlebar height without having to shorten the steerer. But the real highlight is in the drops. Compared to its predecessor, the drops are now individually adjustable in width and can be replaced without disconnecting the brake lines. The true innovation is the new Aero Drops. Available separately, these flared drops offer a minimum handlebar width of 350 mm in the hoods and 420 mm in the drops. According to the latest UCI rules, turned-in hoods are now permitted within these specifications. To emphasise the sporty character of the drops, the Aero version has 10 mm more reach, allowing a more stretched aerodynamic position.Pace Bar, as Canyon calls the new cockpit with interchangeable drops, perfect for racing. Thanks to the Gear Groove, already known from the Canyon Grail, Canyon have also made it possible to mount accessories such as aero bars, a stem mount and a light on the new Aeroad CFR 2024. Although this makes the bike incredibly versatile, the Gear Groove slightly spoils the overall clean look of the Aeroad. The integrated rear light, on the other hand, looks very neat. It can be attached to the seatpost with a small adapter or a magnet, and its brightness and flashing mode ensure good visibility in all weathers. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of StVZO approval, so it wont be available in Germany. If you race, you have to train. For this reason, and to make the bike more suitable for everyday use, the Canyon Aeroad CFR is equipped with a rear light. At the request of the pros and to the delight of all roadies Canyon Aeroad CFR 2024The Aeroad CFR is a bike for professionals, and Canyon make that clear with this new model. However, the new features should also make the bike more attractive to amateur athletes and competitive in local crit races. The rear end of the Aeroad 2024 has been made much stiffer, giving more feedback and a more direct feel, as requested by the World Tour teams. However, the new Aeroads cobble-proven claim raises the question of whether this increased stiffness comes at the expense of compliance. But it wasnt just the riders who influenced the bike, the teams also had a lot of say. Canyon have used a few clever tricks to improve the bikes maintenance and durability. Thanks to the high-precision Acros bearings and a titanium bearing seat, the headset is more durable and, with the new seals, better protected from the elements. In fact, Canyon are so convinced of the Acros bearings that the Aeroad can probably be hosed down with a pressure cleaner. Not something we would recommend on a bike costing just under 10,000, of course. With a titanium ring embedded in the fork, Canyon ensure less play in the headset for longer life. But thats not all the new seat clamp allows independent adjustment of saddle angle and fore-aft position. For quick, scratch-free roadside repairs, small rubber feet protect the fork when parked with the front wheel removed. Canyon rely on T25 for (almost) all of their own bolts, ensuring easy adjustments on the go. The appropriate tool is conveniently concealed in the axle lever, so it is always at hand.Gear Groove allows accessories such as aero bars or a mobile phone holder to be attached to the cockpit.Same same The design of the Canyon Aeroad CFR 2024Visually, theres not much difference between the Canyon Aeroad CFR 2024 and its predecessor, but that doesnt necessarily mean anything. The classic, familiar look is instantly recognisable yet still modern and up to date. Small changes, such as the narrower front and shallower rear profiles, follow the current trend of modern aero bikes. The only thing that might spoil the clean look is the Gear Groove on the handlebar. For all the fans, Canyon also offer the Aeroad in the paint finish of the pro team. The Canyon Aeroad CFR 2024 in detailOur Aeroad CFR 2024 test bike lives up to its name, boasting top-of-the-range equipment. Featuring Shimano Dura Ace Di2 and a power meter, the 7.2 kg bike shifts reliably and efficiently. In keeping with the aero concept, Canyon rely on DT Swiss ARC 1100 DICUT wheels with a depth of 50 mm and Continental GP 5000 S TR tubeless tires. A pleasant surprise was the extremely comfortable 3D printed Selle Italia SLR Boost 3D Carbonio saddle. Canyon offer all of this for 9,999. For those who prefer SRAM, the latest RED AXS groupset with Zipp wheels is available for 500 more. Canyons more budget-friendly CF models start at 4,199 and go up to 6,999.Canyon Aeroad CFR 2024 9,999SpecificationsSeatpost Canyon SP0077 AeropostBrakes Shimano DURA-ACE Di2 R9200 160/140 mmDrivetrain Shimano DURA-ACE Di2 R9200 2 x 12Chainring 52/36Stem Canyon CP0048 Pace Bar 100 mmHandlebar Canyon CP0048 Pace Bar variable mmWheelset DT Swiss ARC 1100 Dicut 50 12 x 100/12 x 142 mm Through AxleTires Continental GP 5000 s TR 700 x 25c / 28c 25 / 28Cranks Shimano DURA-ACE R9200 172,5 mmCassette Shimano DURA-ACE R9200 11-30TTechnical DataSize 2XS XS S M L XL 2XLWeight 7,2 kgThe geometry of the Canyon Aeroad CFR 2024If it works, dont fix it. The bike feels particularly comfortable at higher speeds and maintains the built up speed efficiently. Its at its best when sprinting, impressing with its stability and strong acceleration. The stiffer rear end of the Aeroad CFR 2024 provides more feedback, but at the expense of compliance. Compared to the competitions most advanced all-rounders, the Aeroad offers a harder, more classic road bike feel. The 28 mm wide rear tire and excellent Selle Italia saddle help to filter out vibrations. Pros on cobblestone stages and casual riders looking for more comfort can fit tires up to 32 mm wide for significantly more compliance. With its features influenced by the pros and slightly higher weight of 7.2 kg in size M, the Aeroad CFR 2024 is best suited to short rolling hills and fast climbs. On long climbs or Alpine passes, it feels less at home and requires more input from the rider. This is particularly noticeable when accelerating out of switchbacks or riding at low speeds, where the bike is not as nimble as its lighter counterpart, the Ultimate. But once you reach the top, the fun begins. On descents, the Aeroad rides safely and precisely, with plenty of pressure on the front, and it handles tight corners stably and with minimal input. Pure riding pleasure.Ergonomically, the bike sits perfectly, and with the individually adjustable cockpit there is no reason for a bad fit. The only time you might feel a little flex in the handlebar is when the drops are extended. However, with the Aero Drops at 350 mm, the bike remains 100% stable even during the hardest sprints. Tuning Tip: The new Canyon shoes for the perfect symbiosis of bike and rider.Who is the Canyon Aeroad CFR 2024 for?The Canyon Aeroad CFR 2024 is designed for racers and hobbyists with sporty ambitions. Its intuitive handling and compact riding position, combined with excellent aerodynamics, result in a fast bike that is fun to ride, even for less experienced cyclists. In addition, the Aeroads excellent value for money, improved durability and ease of maintenance ensure that even the most demanding bikers will enjoy it for many years to come. However, riders looking for maximum versatility might find that the Aeroad lacks a bit of lightness when climbing the steepest and longest Alpine passes.Helmet POC Ventral | Glasses Oakley Sphaera | Jersey Pas Normal Studios Solitude | Bib Shorts Pas Normal Studios Solitude | Socks Canyon Aero SocksConclusion on the Canyon Aeroad CFR 2024With the Aeroad CFR 2024, Canyon have presented a worthy successor to their popular road bike. Canyon says 2024 Aeroad CFR is the fastest bike in the pro peloton
After teasing it in the pro peloton for a number of weeks, Canyon has announced the new Aeroad CFR, the latest update to its popular aero road bike.Said to be both lighter and more aerodynamic than the third-generation version, the 2024 Canyon Aeroad is claimed boldly to be the fastest bike in the pro peloton.Although it retains a similar overall silhouette to the outgoing model, every tube shape has been refined subtly, while Canyon has overhauled the bikes integrated cockpit, making it more customisable than before. The German direct-sales brand also focused on making refinements to the Aeroads serviceability and durability. This, Canyon says, makes the new Aeroad as fit for everyday riders as it is for world champions such as Mathieu van der Poel. The 2024 Canyon Aeorad range consists of six models across two tiers: CFR (standing for Canyon Factory Racing its flagship sub-brand) and CF SLX.Prices start at 4,499 / $5,599 / 4,199 for the SRAM Rival AXS-equipped Aeroad CF SLX 7 AXS and rise to 9,749 / $10,499 / 10,499 for the Aeroad CFR AXS with SRAMs new Red AXS groupset.Simon von Bromley rode the new 2024 Canyon Aeroad CFR Di2 at its launch event in Spain. You can read his first ride review here.Building on a proven platformThe 2024 Canyon Aeroad CFR is claimed to be the fastest bike in the pro peloton. - Simon von Bromley / Our MediaAccording to Canyon, the design of the 2024 Aeroad was influenced primarily by feedback from its sponsored-professional riders and team mechanics.Rather than requesting that the platform be overhauled completely, Canyon says the feedback focused on ways to refine the platform such as making it lighter, more durable and easier to work on.The overall design is similar to the outgoing model, but every tube shape has been updated subtly. - Simon von Bromley / Our MediaAs a result, the tube shapes have been updated subtly across the bike, with the front section of the frame focusing on aerodynamic improvements and the rear on weight, comfort and practicality.Tyre clearance has been increased to 32mm, up from 30mm on the old bike, to enable the use of wider tyres.Canyon has also redesigned the Aeroads adjustable integrated cockpit, replacing the CP0018 Aerocockpit with the new CP0048 PACE Bar.Changes at the rear of the bike focus on reducing weight and improving comfort. - Simon von Bromley / Our MediaPACE stands for Performance Adaptive Cockpit Ecosystem and the new cockpit builds on the previous handlebar (which also features on Canyons Ultimate CFR and Endurace CFR) by adding the gear groove from the Canyon Grail CFR and increasing the amount of adjustability and customisation on offer. The CP0048 PACE Bar also has interchangeable drops, which can be swapped without disconnecting the brake hoses (more on this later).Speed refinedAccording to testing at the GST Wind Tunnel in Germany, the 2024 Aeroad is more aerodynamic than Cervlo's S5 and Specialized's Tarmac SL8. - CanyonAs with any aero road bike, one of the primary development goals with the new Aeroad was to make it faster.According to Canyons testing, which was conducted at the GST wind tunnel in Germany, the 2024 Canyon Aeroad is 1.6 watts more aerodynamically efficient at 45kph than the previous version.Perhaps importantly, though, the same testing shows it is 2.5 watts more aerodynamic than Cervlos S5 and 8 watts more efficient than Specializeds S-Works Tarmac SL8.For context, Canyon says all bikes were tested with DT Swiss ARC 1100 Dicut wheels with 50mm-deep rims and Schwalbe Pro One TLE tyres (25c front and 28c rear). All bikes were tested without water bottles but with Canyons 'Ferdie' leg dummy (a set of moving dummy legs that simulate the effect of a rider aboard the bike).Canyon uses its 'Ferdi' dummy (seen here on the 2021 Canyon Aeroad) in wind tunnels to simulate the aerodynamic effects of a rider on the bike. - CanyonAccording to Canyon, these gains have been realised via subtle refinements to the Aeroads tube shapes.Up front, the new fork features legs that are deeper and thinner, maximising their chord length in relation to the latest UCI technical regulations. The head tube and down tube have also been optimised by making them thinner. This reduces their frontal area and increases the effective aerofoil chord length, increasing their aerodynamic efficiency (in theory). At the rear of the bike, the tube profiles have been made shorter and slimmer, while the top tube has been broadened to increase handling stiffness.Heavier frame, lighter overallThe 2024 Aeroad CFR frame is a little heavier, but overall weights for complete bikes have gone down. - Simon von Bromley / Our MediaAs well as being more aerodynamic, Canyon claims a complete 2024 Aeroad CFR weighs only 7.07kg in its lightest stock build with a Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9200 groupset and DT Swiss ARC 1100 wheels in a size medium.Thats 230g less than the third-generation Canyon Aeroad CFR Di2 we reviewed in late 2020.This is despite the frames claimed weight going up by 45g, from 915g to 960g, for a size-medium frame with Canyons stealth artwork.Complete bikes are specced with shallower wheels than previously, saving a little weight. - CanyonCanyon says the frame weight has gone up due to reinforcements to the carbon layup designed to make it more durable a crucial factor for races such as Paris-Roubaix.Overall builds are lighter, though, thanks to the improved aerodynamics of the frameset, which enable the use of shallower rims without any loss of overall aerodynamic efficiency.PACE Bar and interchangeable dropsCanyon's new PACE Bar offers increased adjustability compared to the outgoing cockpit. - Simon von Bromley / Our MediaAs noted, the PACE Bar replaces the CP0018 Aerocockpit, with Canyon claiming it offers a more aerodynamic profile and increased adjustability. The shape of the stem has been redesigned subtly, for example, with a more angular appearance, while theres now a greater width and height adjustment range available than before. The range of width adjustment has increased from 40 to 50mm, while stack-height adjustment has increased to 20mm, up from 15mm.The PACE Bar system enables a large amount of customisation, but the stem length is still fixed. - CanyonAs before, theres no facility to adjust the stem length of the PACE Bar and Canyon wont be offering riders the option to spec a different stem length at the point of purchase either.Canyon sees the new interchangeable drops as a potential solution to this, though. At launch, two drop shapes will be available its existing classic drops, as featured on the CP0018 Aerocockpit, and new aero drops. The classic drops feature straight drops, with a compact bend shape and 130mm of drop. As before, these enable the handlebar width to be adjusted between 370 and 410mm.The optional aero drops give the new Aeroad a narrower, flared handlebar, designed to promote a more aerodynamic riding position. - Simon von Bromley / Our MediaThe aero drops, however, are much more progressively shaped, with 19 degrees of flare, 10mm of extra reach and 25mm less drop. They also offer a hoods position 20mm narrower than with the classic drops (350 to 390mm).Narrow and flared handlebars are an increasingly common sight at the pointy end of the sport, with most riders at this years Tour de France using sub-40cm handlebars. So, it's little surprise to see another major brand adopting the trend. One of Canyons lead design engineers, Lukas Birr, says wind tunnel and track testing with multiple riders showed the aero bars offer a potential aerodynamic advantage of up to 14 watts, compared to the classic drops.Canyon says riders will need to adopt the right position in order to experience the biggest gains from its aero drops. - CanyonHe notes, though, that the magnitude of the saving is dependent on the rider and how they hold themselves on the bike not everyone will see an instant 14-watt gain. The biggest gains were seen with those who were riding the correct-sized frame and could get tucked down, with their elbows in.At launch, all 2024 Aeroads will be specced with classic drops, with the aero drops available as an aftermarket upgrade for 239.95 / 230.The Gear Groove enables accessories such as triathlon bars and bike computer mounts to be added to the PACE Bar. - Simon von Bromley / Our MediaBirr hinted that more options and drop geometries may follow post-launch, but declined to offer any details on what we might see or when.As on the Grail handlebar, the Gear Groove enables accessories such as a bike computer mount or Canyons PACE T-Bar triathlon bars (208.95) to be mounted to the Aeroad. One fastener to rule them allCanyon has moved to a single fastener for all bolts riders interact with. - Simon von Bromley / Our MediaBeyond changes that make the 2024 Aeroad lighter and faster, Canyon has also incorporated a number of alterations to ensure it's easier to service.Perhaps the biggest change is the move to speccing Torx 25 heads on every bolt a rider is likely to interact with, across the frameset, cockpit and seatpost.Helpfully, a T25 bit is integrated into the head of the thru-axle lever meaning if you keep that on the bike, youll always have access to a tool to adjust the key components during the ride.A T25 bit is incorporated into the thru-axle lever. - CanyonCanyon says the bolts are made in Germany, ensuring high strength, precision bolts that are less likely to round out or corrode. The running change made to the seatpost on the previous-generation Aeroad has also been retained, with the 2024 Aeroad moving to a more conventional seatpost and clamp arrangement on top of the top tube (the previous Aeroad featured a seatpost clamp on the rear of the seat tube). In part, this came from feedback from Canyons star athlete, Mathieu van der Poel, who said he felt the rear end of the old Aeroad was too compliant. The seatpost clamp has been moved to a more traditional location, on top of the top tube. - Simon von Bromley / Our MediaAccording to Birr, van der Poel wanted more road feedback through the rear end, which prompted the German brand to create an updated version for him (which he duly won Milan-San Remo on).Canyon has also updated the headset, moving to a stainless steel-ceramic hybrid bearing co-developed with Acros.Canyon says the updated headset is better sealed and uses high-quality bearings that should last much longer than before. - CanyonAccording to Canyon, these should dramatically improve their longevity, while the headset seals have also been updated, with a titanium bearing seat, to make the headset 'pressure-washer proof' (although Canyon would still recommend avoiding a pressure washer if possible).2024 Canyon Aeroad range, specification and pricingAll bikes in the 2024 Canyon Aeroad range feature electronic groupsets and carbon wheels. - CanyonThe 2024 Canyon Aeorad range consists of six models across two tiers CFR and CF SLX.At launch, Canyon isn't offering a cheaper CF SL option because it says it has taken its performance engineering approach to a whole new level with the new Aeroad, and that this can only be achieved at the CF SLX and CFR tiers.Canyon says every bike in the 2024 Aeroad range will feature electronic groupsets, deep-section carbon rims and high-quality road tubeless tyres.Prices start at 4,499 / $5,599 / 4,199 for the Aeroad CF SLX 7 AXS and rise to 9,749 / $10,499 / 10,499 for the Aeroad CFR AXS.Canyon Aeroad CFR AXS2024 Canyon Aeroad CFR AXS. -
