It was a special moment: Tibor del Grosso reflects on fleeting Maasmechelen lead as Van der Poel rewrites history
For a brief spell in Maasmechelen, Tibor del Grosso found himself in a position few riders have occupied this winter, alone at the front with Mathieu van der Poel temporarily out of the picture. It did not last, but it said plenty about the race, and about the rider who ultimately reclaimed control....

Benooturges other riders not to work with Pogaar and van der Poel
Tiesj Benoot (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) has urged other riders not to work with Tadej Pogaar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) or Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech) in the classics, or ride on the front when they are around. The Belgian, who has just left Visma-Lease a Bike, said Pogaar and van der Poel were now []

It was a terrible cross for me: Thibau Nys opens up on frustrating Maasmechelen outing as Van der Poel sets the benchmark
For Thibau Nys, the Maasmechelen World Cup was not about results or records, but about limitations. One week before the world championships in Hulst, the Belgian champion rode consistently at the front yet finished fourth, left searching for rhythm on a day when others, most notably Mathieu van der...

Seth Dunwoody | Growing expectations and harder race programme in 2026
Seth Dunwoody concedes with a chuckle that last season was perfect, in my opinion, to be honest. But he is not getting carried away, saying last years success brings more resources for him in 2026, but also higher expectations and being more closely marked by his rivals. The Co Armagh teenager, who started with Orchard []

People who suggest bicycles should be registered are deeply unserious or misguided
Comment & Analysis: With the news that the Department of Transport is looking at lumping other micro mobility users (aka cyclists) into the proposal of making high-vis and helmets mandatory for scooter users, we have been treated to more anti-cycling rhetoric. In particular, a common go-to suggestion for bicycle haters has raised its head that bicycles should be registered like cars. Its often suggested online, even when articles are posted that have nothing to do with law-breakingBut, as has been hinted at on these pages before suggesting registration for bicycles is a sign that a person is deeply unserious or that they are unable to understand the risk to life, limb and property thats caused by motorists, which is why registration is imposed on them.In the scale of risk from different modes of transport, bicycles pose around as much risk of damage as pedestrians do. It would be seen as daft that pedestrians go around with numbers attached to them the same approach should be taken for when its suggested for bicycles.Thered be major issues with the practicalities of registering and of enforcement but the main issue would be that none of it could be worth the cost. No, cyclists dont break the law more than motorists Often, calls for bicycles to be registered also come from the motonormativity idea that cyclists break the law more than other road users. The idea that because motorists are registered, it means they dont break the Road Traffic Acts on a wide scale on a daily basis shows that people are having a laugh, or that their biases (or bitterness) towards cyclists (for whatever reason) is at work. But I see more cyclists running red lights is a typical response, but the fact is, cyclists run red lights diffrently to motorists. Most people are programmed to unthinkingly give way to motorists who have put the foot down when they could have stopped on an amber, while complaining about the cyclist who left on green, but the traffic light times are designed for motorists.None of this is to deny that there isnt wholesale running of red lights by cyclists at some junctions and crossings. Much like so many laws which are broken, more enforcement is needed.Equally, there are other junctions, mainly larger ones, where few cyclists run red lights, but a stream of motorists run lights at every light change. And pedestrians also ignore lights, oftenmost understandably because waiting times can be ridiculous.More importantly up to a few people are killed each year and many more are seriously injured by motorists running red lights, but this is rarely talked about and theres a pretence by some that motorists dont even run red lights. And we dont need cyclists to outline what motorists do wrong. Motorists themselves often complain that other motorists use their phones while driving, tailgate, change lanes without warning, dont indicate at roundabouts, careless overtake, hog the middle lane, or wrongly use lights in ways that can be dangerous. There are also worrying signs about an increase in drunk and drug driving, and fewer people using seat belts. Some motorists expect another group of road users to behave perfectly when nobody does, all members of all groups are humans. If we want everyone to behave perfectly, maybe motorists could get together and lead the way?
