- WWW.BIKERADAR.COMENVE's new Foundation AR40s reaffirm commitment to value wheelsets and hookless rimsENVE has announced the release of its new AR40 wheelset, the latest addition to the value-focused Foundation line-up. Featuring 40mm-deep and 32.2mm-wide carbon rims, the Foundation AR40 wheelset features hookless rims and is designed to work across road, all-road and gravel bikes. According to the American brand, the Foundation AR40 wheelset borrows from knowledge gleaned during the development of ENVEs pricier wheelsets, and is claimed to be more aerodynamic than Reserves 42|49 wheelset with a 29mm tyre. Priced at 1,800 / $1,500 / 1,649 and claimed to weigh 1,515g, ENVE says it represents the highest quality wheelset on the market at its price. Read more: Best road bike wheels in 2025 | 31 rim and disc brake wheelsets tried and tested ENVE still believes in hookless ENVE pitches its Foundation wheels as 'best in class' for their $1,500 price. ENVE Despite jumping on board the mini-hook rims bandwagon last year, with its SES 4.5 Pro wheelset (as used by Tadej Pogacar at the Tour de France and beyond), ENVE says it still believes in hookless rims when optimising for tubeless tyres. Rather than citing potential cost savings, ENVE says using a hookless profile allows the rims critical tolerance at the bead seat diameter to be both consistent and accurate, which helps deliver a safer and more reliable tubeless system. As with other hookless rims, this means the Foundation AR40 wheels are only compatible with tubeless tyres between 27 and 50mm wide, and ENVEs spec sheet notes that riders should only use models listed as Approved/Recommended on its website. The AR40 wheels use a wide, hookless rim optimised for larger road bike tyres and beyond. ENVE Beyond this, ENVE says the AR40 rims use its wide hookless bead technology, which helps reduce the chance of pinch flats from rock strikes, and its patented moulded spoke holes. These are said to create a lighter and stronger rim compared to drilled spoke holes because the carbon fibres remain intact and enable them to withstand higher spoke tensions with reduced risk of failure. The Foundation AR40 wheels are specced with ENVEs own alloy hubs, with steel bearings and an oversized 42mm ratchet drive system. The design prioritises low maintenance and easy serviceability, according to the brand. Optimised for road, but off-road capable Although aero-optimised for road tyres, ENVE says the AR40s are off-road capable. ENVE Although the Foundation AR40 wheelset is optimised for use on road bikes first and foremost, and has been designed around road bike tyres, ENVE says it has been designed to withstand the rigours of riding and racing off-road. In terms of performance, ENVE says it pitted the Foundation AR40 wheels against its own SES 4.5, 4.5 Pro and 6.7 wheels, as well as Reserves 52|63 and 42|49 wheelsets, at the Mercedes-Benz Formula One wind tunnel. ENVE used its own Melee road bike as a test mule. ENVE performed aero testing for the AR40s at the Mercedes-Benz Formula One wind tunnel. ENVE The results show the AR40s are competitive with ENVE's pricier wheelsets. ENVE With a 29mm tyre, the results show the AR40 wheelset outperforms the pricier SES 4.5 Pro wheelset (4,100 / $3,750 / 4,499) at 32kph / 20mph, and is competitive with the deeper-rimmed alternatives. Its fair to say the increased scale on the Y-axis exaggerates the difference significantly, though, given the actual difference appears to be less than 0.5 watts, and no margin of error is quoted for the figures. ENVE's Foundation AR40 wheelset is claimed to perform almost as well as wheelsets costing twice as much. ENVE At 48kph / 30mph, the differences are a little clearer and the 4.5 Pro wheelset pulls ahead by around 2.5 watts. The data shows the AR40 wheelset outperforms the Reserve 42|49 (1,599 with DT Swiss 350 hubs) by a little more than one watt, though. All things considered, then, these are small margins, but its encouraging that the AR40s ought to offer competitive aero performance even when compared to options costing significantly more.0 Comments 0 Shares 445 Views

- WWW.CYCLIST.CO.UKNew Enve Foundation AR40 wheels bring all-road capability to brands lower-priced wheel rangeCyclistNew Enve Foundation AR40 wheels bring all-road capability to brands lower-priced wheel rangeEnve has launched the Foundation AR40 wheelset. Its name gives away its main features, with a 40mm deep rim with 25mm internal width designed for all-road use.The brand says its aero-tuned for tyres of 29mm or 30mm width and offers drag reduction thats greater than youd expect for the wheelsets 1,515g weight and UK price of 1,800. Related Posts Enve launches 1,295g SES 4.5 Pro wheels and bead hooks are back Best gravel bike wheels 2026 Best road bike wheels 2026 reviewed Hooked vs hookless rims: Pros, cons and which is right for you Patented Wide Hookless rimsEnve says that with its Foundation wheelsets it aims to provide the highest quality sub-$1,500 wheelset on the market. To achieve the lower prices than its flagship SES wheels, it uses less complex rim construction with the same rim depth front and rear, while it aims for reliability and efficient manufacturing, rather than prioritising low weight. As youd expect from the all-road designation, the Enve Foundation AR40 wheelset is designed primarily for road use, but is happy to stray off-road for gravel riding and racing. Enve says that the wheels have been tested to its gravel wheelset standards. Its not the first brand to designate its wheels for all-road use, with the Fulcrum Sharq wheelset aimed at the same niche between aero road wheels and gravel bike wheels. The Foundation AR40 rim is tubeless-ready and has a hookless bead thats 3.6mm wide, conforming to Enves Wide Hookless design, which it claims helps to reduce the likelihood of pinch flats. With the 25mm internal rim width, this leads to a 32.2mm external rim width.Rather than drilling the spoke holes into the rims, which would cut the carbon fibre strands, Enve uses a patented process that moulds the carbon fibres around the spoke holes and valve hole. It says that this increases rim strength and allows it to produce a lighter rim with higher spoke tension. It uses 24 Sapim CX-Ray J-bend spokes front and rear, with brass nipples.Enve claims a 1,515g wheelset weight with rim tape and valves, with the wheel rims each contributing 425g. The front wheel has a 690g claimed weight and the rear wheel 825g.The new wheelset has been wind tunnel tested at 32kmh/20mph and 48kmh/30mph and benchmarked against other wheelsets from Enve and Reserve. Enve claims that the multiple testing speeds ensure that theres a performance advantage for riders of all abilities.Despite being optimised for tyres around 30mm, Enve states that the AR40 is compatible with any tyre over 28mm wide. Its rated for tyre pressures up to 80psi/5.5 bar.Enve recommends using tubeless tyres, as it believes they are the fastest tyres available today, regardless of whether theyre run with or without tubes, since this is where tyre brands are focussing their R&D spend. The AR40 wheels are equipped with Enves Foundation grade hubs with steel bearings, which use the same Innerdrive 42mm diameter steel ratchet freehub as Enves Premium hubs and include components that are interchangeable with them.Enve claims the Innerdrive design offers automatic bearing pre-load and longer bearing life, as well as low maintenance and easy servicing. The wheels are available with Shimano 11/12-speed, Shimano Micro Spline and SRAM XDR freehubs. The Enve Foundation AR40 wheels are priced at $630 for the front and $770 for the rear, for a $1,400 total wheelset price. Enve points out that this hasnt changed since the Foundation wheel range was launched five years ago. The UK price is 1,800.The post New Enve Foundation AR40 wheels bring all-road capability to brands lower-priced wheel range appeared first on Cyclist.0 Comments 0 Shares 491 Views

Its Podium carbon rim brake wheels offer rim depths of up to 80mm, while it also sells disc brake gravel and MTB wheelsets alongside its disc brake road, track and time trial wheels.Boyd makes its alloy rims in-house and has recently added the capability for in-house carbon rim manufacturing.Johnson says the new wheelset is optimised for 28mm to 30mm tyre widths, run either tubeless or with inner tubes. The rim has a claimed weight of 310g, with T1000 carbon fibre used for the bead hooks and spoke holes, high stress areas where impact resistance is important. The layup at the spoke holes is designed to distribute stresses, with Johnson saying this allows higher spoke tensions, while high pressure moulding allows Boyd to achieve a claimed 72:28 fibre to resin ratio, which it says ensures strength-to-weight and rim consistency. The rim is claimed to be able to withstand more than 2.5 times the UCI-mandated impact force requirements.Boyds new wheels turn on its Grade 54 hubs with a ratchet freehub with 54 points of engagement, equating to a narrow 6.6-degree engagement angle. The hubs have a claimed weight of 85g for the front and 185g for the rear. They employ Enduro steel bearings, offer tool-free service and are available for Shimano, SRAM XDR and Campagnolo cassettes. Both the front and rear wheels are laced with 24 Pillar Wing 20 straight-pull aero spokes and alloy nipples and are supplied with tubeless rim tape and valves installed. The Boyd Podium 36mm Carbon Disc SL wheelset is priced at 1,860 / $2,100 / 2,150.The post Boyd Cycling launches 1,130g Podium 36mm Carbon Disc SL wheelset appeared first on Cyclist.0 Comments 0 Shares 447 Views
